Bryan Broaddus
Football Analyst/Scout

With so much speculation regarding the wide receiver position, coupled with the success the Cowboys had in signing Laurent Robinson last year, our football analyst Bryan Broaddus broke down five available WRs.
With the Cowboys’ uncertainty at wide receiver at the backup spots, and the latest Dez Bryant situation, there has been plenty of speculation regarding the Cowboys possibly signing a veteran receiver, much like they did last year with Laurent Robinson.

The last couple of days here at Valley Ranch, I have taken the opportunity to sit down and study some free agent wide receivers who just might be on some emergency lists as we head into training camp. These receivers are in no particular order of how I would take them, just a short report on what I was able to observe.

Mike Williams
Plaxico Burress
Braylon Edwards
Mike Sims-Walker
Terrell Owens

I liked this comment on Edwards:

"With Alex Smith at quarterback had plenty of chances to work on his bad ball catches. "
:laugh1:

On the other hand, Broaddus only studied a couple games for each guy. So when he said he "really liked Edards' hands" you are wary--espcially seeing that Edwards has more big drops than any well-known WR I can recall in years.

I'm cruious why he was let go right before the playoffs last year.

Out of these 5, if I had to choose one I would have to choose bringing T.O. back in....basing on production only....plus he may have been humbled a bit by now

I fear Broaddus is getting the mediot disease; some sloppy research in this article.

No Ron.
Please no.
He so successfully threw Romo under the bus and divided that locker room that they are just now finally recovering from it.

Yea, I know what you're saying man, but Brian didn't give me much to choose from here...personally I'm not a 100% sure we need to bring in another, we seem to have some nice rookies that can contribute but I gess we'll know more about that as TC progresses.

The question remains: why did we let Laurent Robinson leave? It's not as if we're loaded at the position. He clicked with Romo. What happened to the "Romo Friendly" crap our GM was proclamating a couple of years ago? Once again being cheap at the wrong time is coming back to haunt us. You have to wonder if these guys know a football player when they see one. :banghead:

Big contract.....and actually the short time he spent here was the best in his career and with Austin and Miles healthy his touches weren't going to be as many as last year...it was purely a financial move not that they wouldn't have liked to see him stay just not with the contract that he got....Financial move on both sides..can't really fault either side.

There is a salary cap in the NFL. Simple as that. Not a team in the league would pay their WR3 what he received.

Laurent Robinson is going to be lost as either a #1 or #2 receiver.

he is probably the worst choice of the 5. Edwards is probably the best choice of the bunch.

Fore sure. He should be every bit as successful as Alvin Harper was when he left for the big contract!

Seems to me he thought Edwards was the best of these guys and that doesnt surprise me. he is a great talent and should be in the prime of his career.
He must be a bad locker room guy. All I can figure

It's got nothing to do with not being loaded at WR
It's got nothing to do with clicking with Romo.
It's got nothing to do with being cheap at the wrong time.
It's got nothing to do with knowing a football player when they see one.

It's got everything to do with the NFL is a business and understanding how it works.

Probably. He's also just a bad football player. I watched a lot of the Niners games when he was starting and he was just plain bad. Jogged on half his routes, couldn't ever get separation, and on the rare occasion that Alex Smith actually threw an accurate pass he'd drop it.

There's a reason why the Niners who are desperate for anything at WR let him go.

Also, looks like Broaddus only watched 2-3 games on each player. That would explain it.

So, my friend ran into TO at the airport the other day. He asked him if Jerry was going to sign him. He replied "**** Jerry Jones", so I'm guessing he's already been told it won't happen.

At least I freaking hope so.

Cool story, bro? :D

have a hard time believing that any of those guys could give us anything....unless TO played just like his old self when he was here, which I don't think he's capable of. I've always liked Braylon, but I prefer someone who can catch to play WR. All of those guys are really #1 (former) and #2 guys...which we already have. We need a #3 slot type with speed. Bottom line is we just have to have someone step up. The other part of the equation is that we simply have to put it all together or it really wont matter who we trot out at #3 WR. In just the last 5-6 years we've had some pretty prolific offenses and a few decent defenses but never at the same time and/or we could put it all together to play complete games and peak at the end of the season. I'm far more worried about the OL gelling and Demarco staying healthy and the pass rush opposite Ware than the #3 WR who won't see the field that much if Demarco, Dez, Witten, and Miles stay healthy.

When was the last time you studied Braylon Edwards on tape? I would say it's only sloppy research when you take the words of folks and dont do the research yourself but again do let that stop you.

I almost want to say yes. He fit well in our system, but I think another guy can come in and do the same thing. We just need to find the right guy for the job.

I think chemistry and trust are the two reasons Robinson was so successful last year. I also feel like they are the two reasons Dez and Austin are inconsistent, more so with Dez. When Romo trusts a receiver, it's obvious because he'll throw the ball there no matter what.

That's what I'm looking for in a receiver. A smart, reliable rout runner that earns Romo's trust from the start. Not sure if he's on the roster, but we'll know soon enough. Bring on training camp!
