The events of the last few days in the life and times of Dez Bryant bring into focus one clear reminder that was front and center 27 months ago when the Cowboys went out of their way to select the talented wide receiver; That there was a significant risk to selecting him and if the Cowboys were to do so, they would have to ignore a number of red flags that many organizations simply were not willing to do.

No team in the last two decades seems more willing to play with fire than Jerry Jones and his Cowboys. And while sometimes it turns out to be typecasting, stereotyping, or misinformation, other times it is Dez Bryant.

Bryant, as the media has pointed out on a number of occasions in the last 48 hours, has never been arrested before. OK, that’s great. But, in the 27 months since the Cowboys have employed this young man, he has generated more headlines than the rest of the team combined. Reports of unpaid bills over here, and reports of a missed meeting over there. Questions about whether he knows the playbook and questions about whether he knows that very few good things can happen at 2 am in a nightclub.

He is everything you hope to avoid when you are trying to run a football team made up of men. One of the complimentary phrases that is repeatedly used when describing a veteran who has his act together is that someone is a “pro’s pro”. It is reserved for the guy that requires no babysitting or maintenance. You signed a football player, and you received one. He is a man’s man and he takes care of his business without you gently waking him in the morning to insure that he will find the trainer’s room in the morning when he scheduled to do so.

Nothing against an article, that an author feels impelled to have to comment upon. Not that we as a Nation just was socked with a real life tragedy in Colorado. Where there was drawn out drama with the loss of the Ramsey little girl.

Not that the Olympics were about to begin in London, with a very tragic Civil War being fought in and around the streets of Syria right now.

Much less the uplifting and drama filled experiences of training camps about to occur all over the country...

this fan kind of is weary of the non-stop and Cowboy intensified scrutiny of a petre dish observation.

You know something, Judges often sent pure bred criminals directly into system in the military. As a trainer, we had to grasp upon them as soldiers, warts and all. You know what? Most of them grew into both men, and soldiers through the process. I expect nothing less from Dez. Some of those soldiers eventually won heroic medals in conflicts.

But to act like a priviledged and judgemental superior to someone going through drastic personal changes and sacrifices while under pressures, seems void of basic respects, to this fan at least.

I'm more atune to pressing the support side of things, and at east not creating a continuous Payton Place where latest gossip is just the norm.

Dez is a gamble. Unless he shows signs of maturity and developing into an elite WR we are probably best not gambling on him with an extension.

It is frustrating to uncover a hidden treasure like Laurent Robinson....and then not be able to retain him because of political and financial ramifications. The Cowboys could not make Laurent Robinson anything more than the 3rd WR on a team with Dez(1st round pick) and Miles(being paid big money). But the dollars Robinson commanded could not be invested in a 3rd WR. So we had to let him walk. The signs are all there with regards to where the Dez Bryant story is heading in Dallas. And if we think Dez is being unprofessional now? Just wait until both he and his agent realize Dallas will never give him big dollars. The Dez situation in Dallas does not look good.

I wouldn't say we will never consider re-signing him.

I just don't think it'd be wise to do so if he continues to show major lapses in off-field judgment or does not develop into an elite weapon on the field. The problem is he shows maturity but isn't dominant he may not be worth the headache and risk of an eventual lapse of judgment. OTOH, if he becomes dominant but continues to show lapses in judgment off the field him and his agent will want to be paid as the top WR in the league with tons of guaranteed money that will be too much of a risk for the FO to accept.

He will need to learn to leave disruptive influences out of his life if he truly wants to change - it will be a major commitment to do so. I am quite confident that he can eventually become a 1500-yard WR if he commits himself. I do worry that he keeps getting dragged into the gutter from elements of his younger life.
