Why would the Cowboys pass on bringing back Mat McBriar?

Nick: They did like his workout on Tuesday, but apparently Chris Jones is someone they want to take a good look at. I don’t think the Cowboys actually passed on McBriar. They were prepared to make him an offer but it was going to be for a chance to compete with Jones. After eight years, I think McBriar went for more money and a more solid job security.

McBriar is probably the best punter in Cowboys history, but there are some definite question marks about his viability going forward because of last year’s injury and his surgery to remove the cyst this offseason. And he's a punter. Sometimes certain positions would warrant keepin a guy around when he's not necessarily the same player anymore (see Ray Lewis in Baltimore) but he's only a punter.

All he would need to do is average at least a 40 yard net (based on last years stats) and he would be in the top ten. I think that is manageable.

I consider special teams that most coaches care about is kicking coverage, return abilities, can a kicker kick a fieldgoal, and then punting distance (as well as covering the return man to minimize the return).

If you can find a guy that can punt the ball well, then yes McBriair can be expendable and obviously was in this case.
