What I'm Hearing, August 2012

-- Some teams that were recommended to track for interior offensive linemen cuts are the Falcons, who already had Todd McClure and Joe Hawley at center before they drafted Peter Konz. Konz may work at guard, but the team has four center fighting for spots, with Miami Hurricane Tyler Horn rounding out the quartet.

The Ravens are another team with four centers still on the roster, with Justin Boren running 3rd team. The second year man from Ohio State is 325 lbs. and fits the big boy mold the Ravens prefer, but he's behind Matt Birk and Gino Gradkowski. The Ravens have journeyman Cecil Newton running 4th string. The team also has a glut of large guard prospects.

The Dolphins John Jerry was mentioned as a guard prospect to track. One person I spoke to thought highly of Jerry coming out of Ole Miss and feels he might benefit from joining a new team. Jerry has struggled to crack the Dolphins lineup in his three years with the club. Watch him on the cut-down days...

Thats good to hear there might be some fair to decent Center prospects available soon.

Will Jerry persue them is another matter though....

Fair-to-decent fourth stringers aren't going to be anything but (hopefully) somewhat experienced backups for us at this point. Though I hope we find a couple we like. Our pro scouting has done a decent job under Garrett, so I have hope we'll improve 2-3 spots on this team after the cut-downs.

I don't see us picking up a receiver or an OL, at least not a guard or center. This team seems to fall in love with its own guys at times.

of course you want to say we could only get 4th stringers.

He mentioned cases were we could get someone much better

They may be 4th string on their team but only because there are other players ahead of them and not because they suck. Put Costa on those teams and he may run 5 th team or be instantly released. Just because a player is running 4 th team doesn't mean he wouldn't be a starter in Dallas.

I'd really like to see a good young center candidate picked up after waivers.

Hopefully the team is doing their homework.

The Ravens have Offensive line issues of their own, and Birk is a shadow of what he used to be.

What did I miss? He mentioned two teams who were four-deep who'd likely cut someone. Or are we hoping they'll cut a starter in order to make room for a backup now?

The good news is, the best centers that are released will WANT to come here. This is where the opportunity is, and on a pretty good team to boot.
