Cowboys' Vickers to play his ‘heart out' for new team

Lawrence Vickers' pride in being a Dallas Cowboy goes way beyond his paycheck.
A Beaumont native who attended Houston Forest Brook, Vickers has fond childhood memories of watching the Cowboys on television with his father, a lifelong fan of the team. It was a special moment for both when the fullback signed a two-year, free-agent deal with the club in the offseason.
But Lawrence Vickers Sr. won't be on hand tonight to watch his son make his Cowboys Stadium debut against St. Louis. He died of lung cancer in May, a loss that weighed heavily on Vickers in training camp.
“It's very emotional because I think about him daily,” Vickers said recently in Oxnard, Calif. “Every day, I wake up and tell him, ‘Thank you.' Maybe this was his last blessing to me, like, ‘Hey, you're there now. Play your heart out.'”
So far, he's done his dad proud. When Vickers wasn't exhorting younger players at camp, he was doing pushups between plays...
