Tony Romo deepens receiver depth

As long as wideouts know where to be, Cowboys QB can make reserves famous

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Who the heck needs Miles Austin (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10147/miles-austin) and Dez Bryant (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13215/dez-bryant)?

OK, that's a ridiculous overreaction to an impressive performance by the Dallas Cowboys (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys)' reserve receivers in Saturday's 20-19 preseason win over the St. Louis Rams (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/stl/st-louis-rams). Nevertheless, receiver depth definitely doesn't feel like a panic-worthy problem after watching Tony Romo (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5209/tony-romo) shred the Rams for 198 yards and two touchdowns in one quarter of work while Austin (hamstring) and Bryant (knee) watched from the sideline.

"I think we needed that," Romo said. "We need to have some depth at that position."

All the Cowboys really need is reliability from their reserve receivers. Just be where they're supposed to be.

As long as that happens, it's part of a franchise quarterback's job to make unknown receivers recognizable names. No doubt Romo can handle that responsibility.

Exhibit A: Laurent Robinson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10519/laurent-robinson) last season.

Yes it would. And then maybe Romo can get some Tom Brady type love and praise! You know, Brady hasnt had any good WR's except fro Randy Moss. Brady made them all.:banghead:

Remember the time when lot of fans were on Romo for not not be vocal or not being a fiery leader? My how times have changed and now Garrett has to talk to Romo about being bit more patient and not get frustrated with Young ones....It turns out all Romo needed to know was that he was unquestionable leader of this team, and we all will see the fiery leader in him.

It's funny a few of the threads in the fan zone are knocking Ogletree for the dropped slant pass. That's the one thing he talked about was he can't miss those Plays. This is what makes me believe that the light has come on. That's pretty impressive that all of his catches have gone for first downs that's actually really cool. If he can consistently get 1st downs you have a chance to be a contributor.

With Tony Romo at QB, everyone has a chance to succeed as long as they run routes they are supposed to and deviate only in ways Tony understands they will.

That's why I'm not terrified at the thought of losing Jason Witten for a few games while he heals.

The silver lining may be that Romo builds chemistry with other TE's and distributes the ball better without his "security blanket".

But it all hinges on Romo, which is why the inconsistent OL really, really bugs me.
