View Full Version : It may make more sense to draft a CB instead

of a Safety this year IF you think the CB can make an easy transition to Safety.
I'd suggest this for a couple of reasons,
1. This CB class is supposed to be very good, esp. with the top 7-8 guys. On the other hand, this Safety class is around average.
We may get much better value in the 2nd round with a CB than a Safety. (I'm assuming the CB could make an easy transition.)
2. We don't have any proven depth behind TNew and Henry. Who knows where Hunter ends up? IF either TNew or Henry gets injured, we could easily move the Safety to CB. It gives us a LOT of flexibility at an important position.
I thought one guy who would be ideal is Marlin Jackson.
Thoughts?

no way we have 3 highly paid cb's. marlin jackson maybe in hte 2nd as a FS, but i doubt we will draft any secondary besides FS or special teamers.,

That's what I mean, taking M. Jackson in the 2nd - or a top rated CB who slips to 42, if his ranking is higher than the best available CB at that spot. (I'm assuming the scouts think the CB can make the transition to Safety, of course.)

Sorry, meant to say "if his ranking is higher than the best available FS at that spot."

Marlin Jackson is the man because he'll probably be a better FS than any of the FS's in this draft PLUS he can back up the CB position. He'd be a steal at 42 and I wouldn't be opposed to taking him if we trade down and have a late first round pick. I think its a vital position to get filled this offseason, probably #2 in line after DE.

I love Marlin Jackson.....but to get him, you hae to draft him in the 24-30 range.
So we either take him at 20 (don't like), or trade down a few spots to get him. The other possibility is we trade up from 42.
I don't see Jackson being a Cowboy, as much as that kills me to say.

I don't care if it's a corner or free safety, but I want a full-time free safety. I don't want none of this, "can be 3rd corner crap if he can't make transition to safety."
Many of us blame Roy Williams' lack of production last season because of FS deficiency. While a nickel CB is important, a nickel CB is only a part-time player compared to an everydown FS and an unleashed Roy Williams.

Why not have a full-time FS who can also play CB?
I'm not talking about compromising here. I talking about a guy who has the skills to cover and has the requisite size to tackle.

It give us more flexibility to play more exotic defensive line ups. You could move Jackson to "3rd corner" or slot on 3rd downs and 3WR sets. Bring in Scott or whoever, and let our strong corners play one on one while blitzing.
Also, what are we going to do if Newman misses time?
Jackson is gold.
If Rolle falls and he is bpa, than take him and let him dominate at safety.

I agree that ability to play 3rd corner would be a plus, but first things first - stellar FS play, please.

Exactly. If Rolle drops, it would be stupid not to draft him. Everyone keeps on stating that we have two high paid cornerbacks. My response is... So what? Wiley was a high paid DE last year and where is he now? Not here, because he sucked. What if Henry sucks?
Dallas needs to take the BPA, period. In today's NFL, you need more than two good corners. And, if CB salaries keep on skyrocketing, our current corners won't be considered highly paid in a couple years.

Are you talking about Rolle dropping to #11? I highly doubt he will drop to our #20.

If you want a safety then draft a safety if you want a CB then draft a CB. I see no reason to put a young player in that situation. It is hard enough making it in the NFL I see no reason to make that transition harder than need be by having a guy learn a new position. I can understand a vet CB late in his career moving to safety because of a level of understanding and confidence of playing in the NFL but to ask that of a rookie I think you will find more failures than success stories.

With the earning power of corners going up, getting a player that might make it as corner to convert to safety is highly questionable. You will end up with attitude problems. Now a marginal corner moving to sefety is a possability...See Hunter as an example of the problem. Now imagine trying to get a well established young (read---looking for a pay day) corner to convert.

there should be enough FSs available in this draft that we DON'T need to experiment with some "conversion project". dustin fox, james butler, josh bullocks, marviel underwood, kerry rhodes, jim leonhard, matt grootegoed, mitch meeuwsen, atari bigby, et al... most of these guys should be available as second-day picks and are already familiar with the safety position.
