IRVING, Texas – Bruce Carter (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14026/bruce-carter) made one defensive tackle last year.

He hopes to have that total in the first series of Wednesday’s game against the New York Giants (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyg/new-york-giants).

Whatever competition the Cowboys held at the inside linebacker during training camp between Carter and Dan Connor (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11308/dan-connor) never really materialized. Carter never opened the door for Connor, even if his preseason work was light.

I guess we know who the starter is next to Sean Lee...

Did Ryan just refer to Sean Lee as one of Carter's coaches?

Interesting thing is Rob mentions him being good in coverage and blitzing but no mention of defending the run game....which is still the issue with Carter that I hope will get better as time goes along.

Me too. I'm cautiously optimistic about Carter, but feel like he his a big question mark at this point. He looks like more of an athlete than a player at this point. He needs to be solid against the run or that weakness will be exploited.

Having Lee next to Carter will help Carter a lot to overcome any weakness e's got against the run. Just like Woodson playing next to Roy Williams helped Roy tremendousely; Roy's weaknesses were exposed & take advantage of once Woodson was gone. But Carter is young, heck of a lot smarter & more athletic then Roy Williams ever was.

I caught than, too. Lee is the true leader of this defense.

Bruce is like a lot of young guys. He has to play,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He has to play more football. He’s shown us he can come in and do the job both in the run game and defending the pass

At this point his instincts are far behind his athletic ability

I have to say I'm moderately excited to see what he can do, even if he doesn't come out dominating like Lee did, some solid play from that spot would be a good start, they need the ILBs to be active against the Giants imo. I think he's worth trying to keep an eye on (rather than watching Ware every play at the snap :)).

Let's not get carried away.

RW played at true Pro Bowl level for about 3 years before he tanked. So far Carter hasn't proven ANYTHING yet. Can't even defend the run right now.

The one thing he can do is cover. That was our biggest weak link at the ILB position the last few years. He also has some talent in the blitzing game as well. Those two skills are going to let RR scheme to cover his weaknesses in playing the run. I think we got a player on our hands fella's. Welcome to the Rush Hour Defence RHD, RHD, RHD.

He's a perfect fit for a 43 Will Backer. He really is.

Lee is the coach on the field...
