RVING, Texas – Houston took care of its quarterback Sunday by signing Matt Schaub (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5615/matt-schaub) to a four-year, $62 million extension that included $24.75 million guaranteed (http://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/8359560/houston-texans-matt-schaub-gets-4-year-extension).
The Cowboys would like to get Tony Romo (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5209/tony-romo) under a new deal sooner rather than later even though he is signed through 2013 with $20.5 million coming to him. Romo’s cap number jumps to $16.8 in 2013, double what he counts this year, and with a $5 million hit coming from the NFL’s cap sanctions the Cowboys would like that a lot lower if possible.
The Cowboys have said they do not look at Romo as the typical 32-year-old quarterback because he did not play his first three seasons, so the length of the deal could be longer. With two years left, the Cowboys are probably looking at a five-year extension through 2018, in which Romo will be 38.
Romo’s guarantee back in 2007 was $30 million, so right off the bat he should be looking at more guaranteed than Schaub. Drew Brees (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2580/drew-brees) received $60 million guaranteed from New Orleans this summer, and that came with a Super Bowl win, an MVP and a league passing record.
Romo’s guarantee could be in the $45 million range -- maybe more, maybe less but not much in either direction.

He's not hurting for money, he'll make in the ballpark of 100 million as a player and then he'll make tens of millions from endorsements, and he'll probably be a color analyst after retirement.

Don't think Romo's favorability is where it would need to be at the moment to get a broadcast job.

It hasn't stopped Matt Millen and his favorability was at an all-time low when he got a job.
I think if Romo chose to pursue that opportunity, he might be okay at it. He's actually quite charming when he's out of his Jason Garrett mode.

You may be right, but I could see Tony getting serious about his golf game after football as well...

I don't know that I believe that's really what Tony would be interested in. He's always seemed to be more of a do-er than a talker. I could definitely see him pursuing golf.

So Romo will get paid more than Schaub?
Thanks for the heads up, Todd.

You guys really got to get over this the whole world hates us thing.
Romo's no more hated than Aikman or Irvin were. It's a complete non issue as to whether he'll go into that field after retirement.

Thats what I think too. I dont think he will go into broadcasting. He is a communications major, but I see him pursuing his golf "dream"

Me three.
He's a super competitive guy, he's going to want to do that before he hangs out with all the knuckleheads on ESPN or NFL network.

No kidding. Schaub isn't even close to Romo's level. Thought that was obvious.

Unless he wins a Super Bowl in the next two years, it's a very bad idea.
Quarterbacks don't win first Super Bowls after age 34. They rarely win any past that age.
As things stand now, every year that Romo is signed and starting beyond age 34 would be a wasted one. We have a lot of young talent, but it's going to be lost on an aging Tony Romo and then a couple of years on Colt McCoy or someone like that.
Play out this contract, franchise him for a year. If the team wins a Super Bowl, great, re-sign him. If not, it will be time to find a replacement.

John Elway says hi. I don't see how giving one of the best quarterbacks in the world a contract extension is a bad idea.

i think we need to re-sign romo before flacco gets a new deal because that one will likely drive up the price way high
that is likely to happen during this year

Len Dawson was 34 in Super Bowl IV.
Johnny Unitas was 37 in Super Bowl V.
Brad Johnson was 34 in Super Bowl XXXVII.
It seems to me like you chose the age 34 arbitrarily, there's no real significance there.
12 other guys have won their first Super Bowl after age 30, including Peyton Manning and Steve Young.

Brady was 34 last year, Kurt Warner was 37 in 2008, Gannon was 37 in 2002. Yeah, they lost, but the first two guys could easily have won, and it's silly to ignore guys who reached the SB in this discussion.

I don't understand this one bit. If he wins a Super Bowl or not, he's still the same guy. I mean, let's say you eat some barbecue ribs and they taste really good. If those same barbecue ribs go on to win a blue ribbon at the county fair, do they taste even better? Of course not. They're the same ribs. Tony Romo is like barbecue ribs before they go to the county fair, only with a helmet and silver, greenish, bluish pants that some have a problem with. Not me personally, but some. Now if those same blue-ribbon winning barbecue ribs sit out in the sun too long at the county fair and become a bit tangy, would they still be Tony Romo? Of course not, they would be Eli Manning. Are you picking up what I'm putting down?

34 is fine. Beyond 34 is the problem. Unitas obviously had won his first league championship in the pre-Super Bowl era.
