View Full Version : NFL Films' president Steve Sabol succumbs to cancer
Steve Sabol of NFL Films has died of brain cancer. RIP
He was outlived by his father, Ed Sabol, founder of NFL Films.
Like many, my love for this league was greatly fostered by the Sabol's amazing ability to chronicle it on film.

Grew up watching NFL Films in the 70's. He gave me a lot of great memories.
Very sad....:( . RIP Steve Sabol.
His father got into the HOF, and I believe with all that he's done, Steve belongs too.

RIP Steve. Very sad to read of his passing. Condolences to his surviving family and friends.
One of my favorite sons to ever follow in a father's footsteps. Steve Sabol did NFL Films proud and brought us all a lot of enjoyment in the process.
Extremely good at what he did and I will feel some definite regret for what would've been his continued contributions... but I can still admire and appreciate his life's NFL Films' legacy that we will always have to remember him by.

I agree, his influence on the way we watch highlights is unquestionable.
Very sad to hear about his loss, he will definitely be missed.

NFL Films' president Steve Sabol, after an 18-month battle with brain cancer, died Tuesday. He was 69.
"Steve Sabol was the creative genius behind the remarkable work of NFL Films," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "Steve's passion for football was matched by his incredible talent and energy. ... He was a major contributor to the success of the NFL, a man who changed the way we look at football and sports, and a great friend."

I grew up on NFL films, I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I would watch their films. You brought a great concept to the game Mr. Sabol and you will be missed.

NFL Films is just a shell of what it was when those of us raised on it were coming up. A great man, who'll be missed. RIP.

Damn. I had been following his treatment progress and Peter King had been periodic updates. Suddenly it stopped a few months ago, I couldn't find anything about him, and King stopped giving updates and answering questions about him.
When that happened, I feared the worst, but I was hoping for the best.
A damn shame. NFL Films will never be the same. The quality that's been missing without Sabol has been evident the last year or so.
May you rise to the heavens to the music of Sam Spence, Steve.

It was my favorite show as a kid. I can still hear that trombone music that they played as background for slow motion shots of Packers and Bears linemen breathing steam in the snow.
What a great narrator as well.
RIP Steve

From the music, to slow motion replays, to amazing camera angles, to mic'ed up players and coaches, Steve Sabol gave the fans a front row seat and view into the game. His vision and packaging of the films made football majestic, the players larger than life, and the game itself the biggest sport in the country.
RIP to a true visionary and talented human being.

So saddened to hear this. I knew he was struggling with this but I had hoped he would beat it.
As others have said he is an icon and so very deserving of the HOF. I thought they should have inducted both he and his father on the same day.
The Sabol name, along with the voice of the great John Facenda will be forever linked with football history.
RIP
