IRVING, Texas

The heroics didn't need embellishing.

When starting center Phil Costa (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/phil-costa/770519) suffered a back injury in the second quarter of the regular-season opener against the New York Giants (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/new-york-giants/67056), the Dallas Cowboys (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/dallas-cowboys/67043) were forced into using a replacement whose arrival was so fresh he hadn't even snapped a dozen times to quarterback Tony Romo (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/tony-romo/142729) in practice.

Despite those difficult circumstances, Ryan Cook (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/ryan-cook/401323) made a seamless transition in helping Dallas post a 24-17 upset. Cook, though, said what he did wasn't nearly as impressive as some Cowboys fans may have been led to believe.

"There's this misconception out there that I'd never played center before, and this guy just hops in and does OK," Cook told FOXSports.com after Wednesday's practice.

"In college, I was a center for five years. I'd only started one (NFL) game at center, but I played a tremendous amount in practice in Miami and even Minnesota as well. I'd rotate in and take reps."

Let's hope. I'd love it if Cook turned out to be a massive upgrade at Center.

Cook is an interesting case. Coming out of college he was a very highly regarded center -- he was the 2nd center picked (after Nick Mangold). However, he never really played center in the NFL as most of his time was spent at RT.

Somewhat rare to see guys move outside - usually goes the other direction

I think may have been drafted a little too high, but regardless... The guy has played well so far.

A 6ft 6in 325 lbs of starting caliber NFL Center for a song... go Dolphins.

Hard to say.

He's a 2nd rounder who has kept himself in the league. That's a successful pick right there.

The real question is whether he got screwed up by being moved outside. Where would he be if Minny had kept him at the position that he did so well at in college (that'd be center)?

Those are valid points.

I don't know of any successful "center to right tackle" conversions. Kind of a ballsy thing for a club to do, center to guard conversions happen all the time... But center to tackle... Uh, no.

Probably had to do with his size, strength, and needs of the team.

Bad coaching at the other places. You take a guy at center and move him to tackle just because he has tackle size? Like all those that want to move the Rat to DE. Just as dumb. Rats quickness is very unusual for a NT; but not for a DE. Cook is tall as a tackle but does not have the quickness that a Tackle needs. Which is why he was a center for 5 years in college.
