between the massive national debt, crap like the above and the myriad of companies who have business strategies that are nothing more than creative extortion, I fear this country is heading for some really dark days in our future

It has been improving, but if I give you the reason. It would be political in nature. Needless to say, the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few. Some don't see it that way. Hence the extortion.

PM me why if you don't mind.
Outside of printing money the problem seems insurmountable to me

That is why Google has got bent out of shape and built their own test bed and it will be selling out quickly and I think in the long run AT&t and Verizon will be gone eventually.

These guys have a royal scam going: Of course they don't want to change anything. And spend money on infrastructure?? That might affect their monthly bonus!

The masses need to stay ignorant, otherwise there is too much accountability. The profits also aren't in it.
There is nothing wrong with capitalism, but this is not capitalism. The mythology of laissez faire enshrines America.
Government is evil, Corporations are people my friend.

You see stuff like this and I can't help to wonder how dense people are when they support ISP's throttling bandwidth.

Sometimes the throttling is necessary due to people chewing up available bandwidth. Although, the only reason it's necessary is because they (providers) aren't doing what they should have already been doing. Building out the infrastructure.
The reason is because spending on building out costs a lot of money and that takes away from the bottom line. ie, stockholder pressure.

Yeah, the infrastructure is another part that makes me laugh.
You have companies like Comcast, CenturyLink and Time Warner all charging ridiculous rates using the same lines that have been in place for 20-30 years.

I think internet infrastructure is now getting to be as important as national highways. But it certainly hasn't been treated like that.

Small countries which have a relatively low number of high-population foci are cheaper to develop services in.
We pay so much because the rest of us subsidize the supplying of broadband service to the fine people of Buffalo, WY.
