Strengths: Was an absolute playmaker on the college level. Is instinctive, quick, tough and aggressive. Plays with a non-stop motor and has rare stamina and durability. Is an intelligent and technically sound football player. He plays with good leverage, knows how to use his hands, and is consistently in good position. He has excellent lower body strength and shows the ability to hold his ground at the POA versus the run. He never quits on a play in pursuit. He is relentless as a pass rusher and shows a wide array of pass rush moves. Is a powerful and consistent tackler. Also has great experience and has proven to be a playmaker on special teams.

Weaknesses: Marginal speed limits his upside. Will struggle to make nearly the amount of big plays in the NFL as he did in college. He no longer will be able to turn the corner as an edge rusher or block kicks on special teams. He is a decent athlete but lacks great COD skills or explosive burst. He also needs to continue to improve his lower body strength. Right now he does not show the base to hold his ground at the POA versus the run in the NFL.

Overall: Swancutt played as a reserve and on special teams in all 11 games as a true freshman in 2001 before taking over as a fulltime starter in his 2002 sophomore season. Swancutt was the first Oregon State player ever selected as Pac-10 Player of the Year (Co-Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2004). He was the only unanimous selection on the 2004 All-Pac-10 Conference Football Team. Swancutt was a team captain who started 38 consecutive games to finish his collegiate career and also was a first-team All-Academic selection as a senior in 2004. Swancutt is a better football player than athlete. His productivity at DE and on special teams was outstanding and there are few that made as many big plays as Swancutt did at his position on the collegiate level. However, because he is just a decent athlete with marginal top-end speed and base versus the run, Swancutt is likely to slip to the second day of the 2005 draft.
