Isn't he an outside linebacker?
Perhaps we will see more of a 4-3 look on defense.

IRVING, Texas – Veteran linebacker Ernie Sims (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9595/ernie-sims) will visit with the Cowboys on Wednesday with the anticipation of signing with Sean Lee (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13284/sean-lee) to miss the rest of the season with a severe case of turf toe.
Sims, 27, played in 13 games last year for Indianapolis with four starts and was credited with 32 tackles. In 2010 he started 15 games for Philadelphia and had 55 tackles and two sacks. He spent his first four seasons with Detroit.

I like this signing. I really liked him coming out of college as well. He always seemed to be a solid NFL player, and I can't find any info on injuries, so I don't understand why he would still be available at this point. He is only 27 years old.
EDIT: Found some info on injuries here:

Still, given the time of the year, I think we are fortunate to get a young player with lots of experience at this point.

It's done, as is the Peprah deal.
Chris Jones and Sean Lee were put on IR.

I remember when the lions drafted him, he was pretty athletic but never lived up to a 1st round pick. Cowboys can't be to picky right now.......hopefully the can get something out of him.

Meh...he's got some experience, but with as much as he's floated around in his relatively short career....he can't be that good.
My guess is a solid depth kinda guy...but I'll leave that to those that know more about him.

I recall a conversation I had with a Lions fan in the scouts.com cowboy forum in 08 (or 09?) who was arguing that Simms was better than Ware.
Maaaaannn, how I wish now that there was even an iota of logic in his delusion.

IIRC, he's great in the run, but so-so in coverage.
He's also a big hitter and sure tackler. That's if I go by previous info..
Welp after being a number one pick he was unemployed mid season at age 28. Tells you everything you need to know.

I think that was more so due to his injury history rather than him not being any good. He lost his starting job to the Lions while going through multiple injuries including shoulder and MCL sprain. Then he was traded to the Eagles where he also battled through injuries. When healthy, he can be a starting LB.

Not sure if Ernie Sims can play ILB in a 3-4, but at least the Cowboys didn't give up a 1 and a 3 for this former Lions top-10 pick.

I think he is. He is a fast and a sure tackler. Not the best on pass defense but I think he will fit in.
Interesting fact: Sims owns an extremely large collection of animals: 20 dogs, 28 different types of reptiles, several horses, and a monkey.[5]Fox produced a segment for the Lions' game against the Minnesota Vikings in Detroit in 2007 which showcased his pets.

I'm fascinated by Sims more so than the animals. Why is he available? I know that he hasn't had the career that many thought. I thought that he was at least serviceable.

What's his deal? He was supposed to be strong in coverage coming out of college....did he just not adapt as well as expected to the NFL passing game?
Ernie Sims is a tremendous athlete with great speed and coverage skills for a linebacker. He may be the best coverage linebacker in the 2006 draft, and reminds in some ways of former FSU linebacker Derrick Brooks. He's also very strong for his size and may excel at the next level because of this. He would be a very good fit for a cover 2 system, such as in Tampa Bay or Indianapolis.

So he has his own little zoo and experience with animals. How nice. Maybe he can add to his collection with his newly found employment.

I found this tidbit about Sims from a bleacerreport article about the Eagles two years ago:
The addition of Sims, pending he becomes the starting weakside LB, immediately makes the Eagles defense a much better one in 2010. To the experts eyes in the NFL, Sims is known as a very fierce hard hitting tackler who punishes the ball carrier.
Ask the fans of the Detroit Lions and you might just get some mixed answers. Since learning of the trade I have watched as much video as I could on him and this is my analysis.
Sims is an extremely hard hitter, one who will hit the ball carrier so hard it might just knock himself out in the process—literally! He has good sideline to sideline speed and is aware of where the offense is at all times.
He does need work on his coverage skills and I'm sure that will be a focal point of his and the Eagles in training camp.
....
In 2006 he was the ninth overall selection in the NFL Draft, he has been the leader on defense for the Lions in 2007-08 while also being their best tackler on defense over the last three seasons.
So how exactly did the Eagles get him for so cheap?
A 2010 fifth round draft pick for a former first round pick and nothing more?
There's a very short and simple answer to that—he was in the last year of his contract meaning the Lions really couldn't expect much better than that, and he no longer fit the Lions style of defense.

He had shoulder and hamstring issues back in 2009 and an MCL sprain in 2011. I think he is good to go now though.

Talked to my friend who is a huge Eagles fan. He said he remembers Sims. Said he was a star in practice but disappeared in games. Also mentioned he is terrible against the run. And he is fast.
