IRVING – The Cowboys are all too familiar with the toe injury that has led to linebacker Sean Lee needing season-ending surgery.

Lee has a torn plantar plate at the base of his right big toe, according to sources. The medial and lateral ligaments in Lee’s toe are also torn, with the medial ligament worse.

The plantar plate supports the weight of the body and holds the toe joints together when you walk, allowing your toes to bend at the balls of your feet.

The Cowboys placed Lee on the injured reserve list Wednesday, ending his season. Lee is expected to undergo surgery within a week. He’s waiting a few days to have surgery as he seeks a second opinion with another doctor, a source said. Lee, however, is “not expecting” a different answer, the source added.
