Commentary Jason Garrett's words get scrambled

Messages of preparation, turnover awareness not registering with 3-4 Cowboys

IRVING, Texas -- Remember the heady days of the Jason Garrett era?

No, not the interim effort, though that 5-3 mark was impressive considering the mental state of the Dallas Cowboys (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys) after a five-game losing streak led to Wade Phillips' dismissal in 2010.

It was 11 months ago when the Cowboys beat the Miami Dolphins (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/mia/miami-dolphins), 20-19, on Thanksgiving to improve to 7-4 with their playoff fate in their control. The Cowboys had a one-game lead in the NFC East with five to play.

Since, the Cowboys are 4-8 and look nothing like a team ready to make a playoff run with a 3-4 record this season heading to undefeated Atlanta on Sunday.

If the trend continues -- one that could put Garrett's job in doubt with those with the last name Jones and not just fans and media -- then turnovers and readiness will be the main reasons why it didn't work out.

Garrett likes to say when he talks to the team, it's like a pastor delivering the same sermon 52 different ways a year.

He is still searching for the right sermon because what he has delivered has not worked.

This is one of the things that cracks me up about the local media love of and defense of Garrett -- that he says or preaches the right things. Archer was on the radio this morning saying, oh, I think he goes about it the right way, he's trying to get his players to not turn the ball over, but the message isn't getting across.

Well no kidding. Every football coach in America is trying to do, and saying, basically the same things: Play hard, be tough, protect the football, be assignment sound, blah blah blah.

The trick is, can you get your team to do it?

The Cowboys are minus-11 on turnovers this year. Only the Kansas City Chiefs are worse. Tony Romo has thrown 13 interceptions. No other quarterback has as many. The Cowboys have lost six fumbles, and have turned the ball over 14 times in their four losses.

Guh.

Readiness? Not sure what that's supposed to mean, but, yeah, the turnovers are just killing us. And, yes, they're ultimately on the HC. Continuing to emphasize something that's not working is not going to fix it, either. They need to be looking at a more drastic fix. Sitting player and changing how they use position groups. Trading yardage for more three-and-outs and leaning on the defense more. Something.

CL, I normally think your criticism of JG is a bit unfair, but I agree completely with you on this one. Possessions matter more than the personnel you've got on the field. If it's the same guys causing the problems (Dez, Felix) you need to sit them, no matter how that handcuffs you in terms of personnel.

If it's actually Tony making the mistakes, you need to fix it so he's not attempting the throws that get picked (over the middle with pressure in your face), or he needs to sit, too. Now, that would be a completely drastic step, and I'm not suggesting it seriously, but he can't be allowed to continue to make throws that turn over the ball. If Jason Witten is the only player he can throw to who doesn't make mistakes, throw every ball to Jason and get more reliable players in this offseason.

Our defense is solid enough to win games. We can't keep putting them behind the 8-ball and scratching our heads when we come out on the losing end of the stick.

I know where Garrett can stick it .... he's getting on my last nerve with these white bread answers ... and I don't mean that in a racial way. It's just to neat, clean and nice. Every thing is not neat clean and nice. We are screwing up our potential success with this crap and this is how he responds???
