View Full Version : The deciding factor

Now that the video tapes and the workout numbers have been studied to death, it's finally time to consider the deciding factor.

For the most part, all of the players in the Ring of Honor and (dare I say) Hall of Fame have one thing in common. They all are ultra-competitors who hate to lose.

When the Cowboys won their Super Bowls ... it was this intangible in several key players that helped put them over the top. It's what made Roger great. Drew Pearson. Charlie Waters. Emmitt Smith. Michael Irvin. Troy Aikman and on and on. The more of them you have -- especially at key positions -- the better chance of winning it all.

As Dallas decides whom to choose tomorrow, this has to be the deciding factor.

Some players learn to accept losing. Some don't have a killer instinct. These players are all over the place ... if you have too many of them on your team, then it doesn't matter how much talent you have.

If Merriman and Ware are close, then take the guy who is the stronger competitor.

This fire is what separates the Jeff Georges and the Ryan Leafs from the Roger Staubachs and the Joe Montanas.

I've seen red flags pop up on several guys in this draft whose competitiveness and will to win can certainly be questioned. Some are being touted as first-rounders for Dallas.

If there is any question about a guy's work ethic or competitiveness, Dallas has to look elsewhere.

I realize that talent is extremely important, but when the final decisions are made tomorrow and the card is sent up, Dallas has to pick guys that puke at the thought of losing or failing.
