Facebook Photo Of Plymouth Woman At Tomb Of The Unknowns Sparks Outrage
BOSTON (CBS) – Two women have been placed on unpaid leave from their jobs after their photo at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia angered thousands of people on Facebook.
Lindsey Stone was visiting the Tomb of the Unknowns last month on a business trip when she posed for a picture next to a sign that reads “silence and respect.”
In the photo, Stone is pretending to yell and she’s showing her middle finger.
The photo, taken by co-worker Jamie Schuh, went viral and sparked thousands of angry comments.

This is the kind of thing that has probably happened hundreds of times before, but now someone was stupid enough to put a picture of it on the internet.
Why would you even go to Arlington National Cemetery if you wanted to screw around?
There has to be thousands of more fun places to goof off, why go to one of the very few places in the country that demands respectful behavior at all times?

Yes, it was dumb, but seriously, who hasn't done something idiotic and regrettable when they were young?
Now this woman's life is going to be ruined by anonymous Internet trolls generating over-the-top outrage, harassing her, her family and friends for who knows how long.
It's terrible, but so it the ridiculous outrage to things like this.

Look at her picture, she is not some random teenager, she's a grown woman!
I could see some juvenile doing something stupid like this, but a woman that should know better deserves everything she gets.
She's lucky to be an American, and then she pulls this stunt over men and woman that gave their lives for a stupid ***** like this just so she can disgrace a cemetery of our fallen Military?
Oh, hell no...!
That's on the same level as when Roseanne Barr grabbed her crotch on Nation TV after singing the National Anthem at a baseball game.

I do know that there are some people (let's say a dead man's wife for example) that may have punched her in the face for that. It's pretty emotional stuff to be fooling around with.

The ironic thing is, the non-profit she works for provides services for the elderly, disabled and those needing things like home health care. It's a safe bet many of these are going to be vets of some kind.
Probably not going to be a pleasant working environment for her and her friend who snapped the pic.

And she deserves every bit of it. And while the people who died to give her the right to do that to their graves may defend it on free speech grounds, the same free speech applies to those who will ridicule and demean and call her out for as long as they feel they want to.
The free speech thing works both ways. At least for now anyway.

What overreaction? All I said was that she had the right to express herself. As do others at her own actions. She opened herself up to it by posting it on the internet for all the world to see. She wanted some kind of reaction or she wouldn't have posted it.
As to her being fired, I at first was against it because it is a free speech issue and I would defend (again) her right to say it. But then I found out she was on company time on a company trip with clients from her employers place of business. Employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will not bring ill repute on their employer. She not only deserves to be fired, but should be fired.
And frankly, the only drama here was created by this woman herself.

This is how the whole episode will be played out. First comes the huge backlash against her, then the hate will go overboard and there will be a backlash against the backlash. She will give a few interviews saying how sorry she is and people will forgive her.
That was a stupid thing she did and she deserves consequences, but I find the US to be a very forgiving nation, especially if her regret is genuine.

I'm not condoning ruining her life but she should take SOME heat...
Living in this country gives her the right to free speech, but many forget we have to live with the consequences of said speech. As Cajun said, it is very moving to be there and represents what built this country, so you are going to have a faction of citizens that are outraged...
She very well may lose her job over this, but her company can't have a black mark on their reputation by keeping her on if they chose to terminate her. It seems extreme, but their bottom line will determine her future.
I hope everything works out for the best and that she has learned a valuable lesson...

The point you seem to be missing is....
There has to be boundaries. Her action, no matter her intentions, completely disrespected Veterans buried there and their families. Every generation it seems we inch towards less respect and more attention whore behavior. She even comes right out and says she likes to ruffle feathers.
I don't think she should be tarred and feathered or hung from the old oak in the public square but the message that this sort of crap will not be accepted must be sent and that there will be repercussions if you are stupid/arrogant enough to go there.
If she had just taken the stupid picture of her "yelling" I doubt it would have blown up on her. The finger puts it way over the top. Which it seems is right where she wants to be.

I think the overall point is this...
Yes she did something stupid. And yes you are right we have all done something stupid at one time or another. But there is a difference between doing something stupid and doing something that is intentionally disrespectful. Those are two vastly different things. She made it very clear in her response that it was her intent to be disrespectful before she said she didn't mean to be disrespectful. She even called herself a "******" and that's the way she is. Well okay but if that is the way she is, then she needs to understand she will reap the consequences of her actions.
Too many times we make excuses for people to help them avoid the consequences of their actions and thus, the behavior is never corrected. And I don't think her "life should be ruined" but since she was on company time and acting like that, she should receive whatever the employer thinks is just, up to and including being terminated.
But please stop equating what she did with some youthful brain fart that can be passed off as some prank. She is a grown, employed woman who did this. And truthfully, I don't think she is sorry for the act itself, but only for putting it on the internet for all the world to see what kind of person she is.

Hey, it can clean up. When you let the small things slide they lead to bigger things. People like this want to see how far they can push the boundaries of disrespect. If this isn't called out, what would be next for her? Taking a dump on the graves?
Anyway, believe what you want and I will do the same. The people who lie in those graves died to give you that right, so disrespect them if you want. Have a blast. It just goes to character.

About 30 years ago some Christian Missionaries were visiting a nation in the Orient. Forgive me, I can't remember which nation, and I don't remember which faith either. In this nation there was a rather large statue of Buddha at a mountain shrine. One of the missionaries climbed up into the statue's lap to pose for a picture. They were all arrested and spent something like 2 years at hard labor. I learned a lesson from that without having to do something stupid to learn it.
About 25 years ago my older brother was climbing in the Superstition Mountains and he discovered a cave. It was an ancient burial cave and is considered a holy tomb by the tribe whose ancestors reside there. A rifle shot hit the rocks near his head. He quickly got away from the cave and signaled his respect and no more shots rang out. I learned a lesson from that without having to do something stupid to learn it.
No matter where you go in the world there are places that are considered sacred. In other countries the consequences can be so much worse than the outrage against these women. I will not object to this outrage because I do consider the tomb of the unknown soldier to be scared and in my opinion outrage is getting off very easy in comparison.
We live in a country that is very forgiving. Sometimes because of that people do not realize how stupid their actions really are, and in this case they are monumentally stupid. Not just the disrespect, but to post it on the Internet and think everyone else will think it is funny just because you like to flaunt authority.
My suggestion to these women is to travel the world flaunting the same type of sacred monuments and see if you like the way you are treated there more or less than the outrage here. Try telling an airline attendant in Russia that you have a gun. Point a realistic looking squirt gun at a cop in Mexico. Aim a laser pointer at the forehead of India's Prime Minister. Go to the Middle East and urinate on a Koran. Moon the Dictator of North Korea.
I suspect the outrage here in America won't seem like too high a price to pay for your stupidity in comparison. And make no mistake about it, what they did was stupid on many levels. I hope they will either learn from it or decide to ramp up their efforts of disrespect. I can either forgive true remorse, which I do not yet see, or I can admire taking this to the next level as suggested above.
Until one of the two happens, I too am outraged at this, though I will stop short of wishing ill upon them. Instead I will hope they learn a painful lesson, and others will too. If this stops even one person from doing the same, the outrage is worth it.
To our soldiers please know this, most of us get why that place is sacred and we honor you, your kindred fallen, and all who are honored at Arlington and around the world for the ultimate sacrifice. You have my sympathy that you have to see something this stupid.

i cant understand disrespecting these serves any useful purpose and is clearly idiotic in the extreme
though you may disagree with the politics of war, disrespecting people who died to protect you has no defense
Who said it was defensible? Seems as if the vast majority of people agree that it was stupid and wrong.

I'm saying that Abu was dishonoring photos, something to get 'outraged' about. This was just some idiot messing around; I don't believe her intention was to dishonor the troops.
Flipping the bird at the Tomb of the Unknowns was not an intent to dishonor them?
We have vastly different opinions of what dishonoring is.

In the future, she'll likely struggle finding another job like this one. And the outrage she garnered on Facebook will have little to do with it. That will blow over in a couple days.
What won't simply blow over is the manner in which represented her company. Employers will remember that.

I kind of agree with denim. She is obviously a complete idiot. I dont think she even thought about what she was doing besides bucking the authority of the sign. It is dishonoring them, but I really don't think that was this moron's intent. She is just a total airhead who didn't even think about the meaning of what she was doing. That does not mean she shouldn't face the repercussions, though. I would fire her in a second.

I don't think so. She works with mentally handicapped people. She can't be that big of a moron not to know what she was doing. If she is then the company that employs her needs to be investigated regarding the quality and intelligence level of the staff they hire. If this was some teenage kid I would give her the pass on it, but she's not. She knew where she was, why they were there and the meaning of the place.

Neither of us know for sure. You could be right, but you could very easily be wrong. I am amazed at the stupidity of countless people. The positions these people hold and the level of incompetence with which they perform knows no bounds.

Especially on a business trip. We're dealing with a couple of Einsteins here.
She probably has a PETA sticker and a coexist sticker on her car. I always get an urge to run the folks with a coexist sticker right off the damn road.
I should probably seek help.

every action has a reaction or consequence. Does anyone remember the Dixie Chicks? That's because they said what they wanted to and then suffered the consequences.

I don't know how much they get played in Texas anymore, but they're still wildly popular.

After that incident, they just about disappeared off of Texas radio. Not sure if they've had a resurgence or not.

Martie and Emily formed their own group called Court Yard Hounds I think. Or something like that. Really, Natalie was the one who caused the problems. Martie and Emily are sisters and they had to do something to salvage their career after the incident. They really never felt the way Maines did though they had to support her during the controversy. I know Pete Finney who plays(ed) steel for the chicks and he hasn't been on the road much at all. Also, the group overall was pissed at Natalie for creating the problem.
But check out the new group if you like the Chicks sound.

I believe that... I worked with them a couple of times when Robin Lynn Macy was still the lead. Nice girls...
They also played at several Bush events throughout the years before Maines came along...
