View Full Version : my final pre draft thoughts

It's finally arrived, Christmas in April...some final thoughts:
1) if Mike Williams is there at 11, I hope we take him...other than Braylon Edwards he's by far the best offensive player in this draft IMO...we havent drafted a WR in the 1st since 1991 (Harper) and Glenn and Key are both30+ coming off injury/surgeries...taking Mark Clayton at 20 is also an option, but I think he will be a "good" player, whereas Williams has dominant player potential
2) assuming we go defense as expected, our 1st pick will likely be Merriman, Ware or Marcus Spears...if all 3 are there at 11 I think we'll try to move down a few spots
3) supposedly the Cowboys have been talking with 3 teams about trading for DE's...Saints for Darren Howard, Brocnos for Trevor Pryce and the newest rumor, Tampa for Simeon Rice
4) one name that has come up in the last day as potential 20th pick (or maybe a few spots lower after a trade down) is Northwestern DT Luis Castillo...DMN's Gosselin has him taking Castillo at 20, and FWST had Castillo as a target in the 20's...he tested positive for steroids but everyone claims he was indeed taking them due to an injury
5) my 3 picks for today, DE Marcus Spears at 11, OLB/DE David Pollack at 20 and FS Brodney Pool at 42...probably moot, since I think we're gonna be moving around alot today (would probably have to move up from 20 for Pollack and from 42 for Pool anyway)
6) and from the "I wont be surprised if"...if we do get Spears and then either Ware, Merriman or Pollack...I think we might shop LaRoi Glover for a 1st rd pick or a 2nd plus something else...

"Final"
Was the only key word I care to here about.

I'm starting to feel uncomfortable with the apparent tunnel vision that Parcells and Dallas have going into today.
I don't like it that they are hell-bent on taking a DE/LB no matter what ... probably with both of the top two picks.
If they could get Howard away from New Orleans in exchange for the second-rounder, that would allow them more flexibility with their first two picks. They wouldn't feel the "need" to have to take a pass-rusher.
Last year, Dallas seemed to be looking ONLY at RBs and ROTs early on. This year, it's the LB/DE pass-rushers and apparently nothing else.
I would like them to have the flexibility to take a WR like Williams, or a CB/S like Rolle, or even a RB like Cadillac if that's the best player available when they pick.
What it boils down to, perhaps, is I'm just not completely sold on any of these pass-rushers in this draft .... either that or I'm jaded due to years of Shante/Kavika/Ebenezer etc.

Morning sir.
"Apparent" tunnel vision is the key.
I, for some reason have a calmer feeling that they won't blow this one. A few beers down the gullet might be the reason, but I think it will be a good day nonetheless.
Enjoy the weekend Chief.

I agree...I think we're gonna do well
if they somehow get Howard or Rice for no worse than this yrs 2nd or a pick next yr, it opens up a whole slew of options for us
I'd love us to get Mike Williams at 11...I wouldnt mind Derrick Johnson at 11 if we're sticking with the 4-3...they could work a multitude of trade downs to accumulate picks this yr (and maybe enxt yr too)

Morning Sarge.
You're probably right. Like I just told Hos. This is a great day ... I should just enjoy it.
Two first-rounders is like getting .... well, you know .... twice in one day.

I do miss boozeman in that regard.
A fine drinking mate.

You're a piece of work Chief.
That really is the bottom line - enjoy the day because even afterward, we're truly not going to know what we have.
Probably won't really know for sure for a couple of years actually.

You are my idol. I have to drive my daughter to dance class in a hour or else I'd join you in toasting to a great Cowboys draft.

Ya - he was a piece of work all the way around and knew his stuff. Having said that - we got some posters here now every bit as good.
No Juke - I'm not talking about you.

Yep it is like Christmas. I like thought of getting Mike Williams but like so many here I feel uneasy about being dead set on picking a DE/LB at 11.
If we pass over Mike Williams for Marcus Spears it would be like that christmas you wanted that shinny new bike but all you got was a bunch of school cloths.

One thing I'd be willing to bet on is that we WON'T take Spears at 11.
No way.
20 maybe - not 11.
