The Cowboys linebacker broke a bone in his elbow that will require surgery later this week.

The club intially hoped if the ligament damage wasn’t too extensive that Carter would be able to return in two weeks. But the broken bone prolongs his recovery period into the off-season, which is why he was placed on injured reserve.

My wife assisted in this exact type of surgery last night. A 33-yo male slipped on an escalator. He is a computer-tech guy and his prognosis is three months, so it will be longer for Carter :(

Well he's on IR, so he has the time to recover properly.

Three months until he can make a fist.....if he's lucky.

13 pins and screws later........ it took me three months to be able to steer my car. Tuck in my shirt. Clap. Scratch the back of my head.

Eskimo broke down the issues with the injury really well in an earlier post
Noting that breaks are very likely in these situations

Maybe shorter. Carter is younger and likely far superior physically

I assist on these surgeries in an ortho hospital. The recovery for this type of surgery is extensive.

But it is variable. An elite athlete is generally going to recover faster

He's got 9 months to fully recover and rehab the injury before training camp begins. Maybe this injury limits his participation in the OTAs during the spring/summer. Obviously the injury is unfortunate, but ultimately he'll be ready for the start of next season.

We really don't know the extent of the fracture here so I think most people in this thread are being overly pessimistic. I think most here are talking about major supracondylar fractures which is a very extensive and complicated fracture and which faces a very extensive surgery only to face a recovery plagued by severe loss of range of motion in the joint.

I very much doubt that was the type of fracture he had so stop jumping off the ledge here. There are many types of elbow fracture and some can be fairly minor. We don't know enough to get worked up over his recovery for next season. He is done for the season and we'll have to wait 4-6 months before we have an idea of how his recovery is coming along.
