View Full Version : Roger Goodell has finally lost his mind now that he wants to expand the playoffs

This idiot wants to expand the NFL playoffs from 12 to 16 teams???
So this fool wants half of the league in the NFL playoffs which would mean that it's easier for all teams to reach the playoffs. How many people will lose interest in watching the NFL if this happens?
I don't think i can watch anymore

More games, whether they be in regular season or in the playoffs, means more money in the owner's pockets. That aslo means a better chance of him being rehired...

Nuts. Where would be the excitement for teams like the Cowboys and Redskins right now...when there are only 6 spots per conference you have to battle for them...2 extra per conference seems to take away from the whole prestige of being a playoff team. A bunch of 8-8 and 7-9 clubs would be getting in...

It's all about money. More teams in the playoffs equals more money. Smart business move, but I don't like it, but every day I like the NFL less and less.

The NFL post season is already an anticlimactic crapshoot that doesn't always reward the best team... it's just what you get with this era of a salary cap with single game elimination.
We don't need to introduce weak teams into the fray for them to have a chance to knock off a top team because they simply match up well, only to lose the very next game.
You want the best teams playing against each other, and introducing 2 more teams detracts from that.
i like it, in basketball and hockey the season is already so long, and then half the league makes the playoffs.
I would like to see more nfl teams and more baseball teams in the post season, I would prefer that to expanding the regular season. Sometimes you have better teams miss the playoffs because a crappy division allows a division winner in that has no business being in the mix.
The jump from 12 to 16 seems like a lot but i dont think you could make it work with 14 teams.

What a joke. Then you just lose the value of winning the division. Something baseball had a problem with and recently changed it for the better.
Gotta love Goodell. All this player safety and bounty crap yet he wants to add more games. I really think he does this intentionally to piss everyone off.

It waters down the playoffs. It should be hard to get into the post season. You should have to win your division or have a pretty good record. Allowing half of the NFL into the post season means that mediocrity is rewarded.

So under that format, if the AFC playoffs started today the crappy Jets @ 6-7 with the Three Stooges at QB would make the playoffs as the 8th seed. You'd think a team that gets into the playoffs should actually deserve it.

two extra teams per conference added would not have such an effect.
As it stands the season ends with 10 teams per conference sitting it out. This would change it to 8 teams sitting it out, while 8 were in.
under such a rule, if the season were over right now, every team in the playoffs would have a winning record except the jets.

I would prefer only adding one more team per conference and only the top team would get a bye.
This would serve my desire to lessen the number of meaningless games in December while not expanding the length and overall tradition of playoff football and would be a wash in regard to player safety
the league though is mostly interested in money, not quality of play in which case a lack of expanding the weeks of playoffs would be a non starter for them

16 teams making the playoffs is an absolute joke. That is half the league exactly. Then it becomes like the NBA and NHL. Half the league making it in and the regular season becomes that much less interesting.
With this format, we would have made the playoffs in 05, 08, and last year. And the funny thing is, in 2010, we may have had an outside shot with the run we went on when Wade was fired.
Keep it how it is. It's fine. But we all know, money talks. And more games, especially playoff games = more revenue to share with all the owners.

Exactly right. So many people try to bury Goddell for things like this because they hear the words coming out of his mouth, but never actually stop to think it through. Roger Goddell is hired by and works for the team owners. While he does have a certain degree of autonomous authority things like eliminating kickoffs and expanding the playoffs are mandated from above, not imposed by the Commisioner.

It's more football and no team is going to be asked to do more than most of the playoff teams do already. I like more football.
The only gripe I see making sense is that the top two seeds losing their bye is a loss of competitive advantage for said teams but I don't really care about that and no one here seems to be making that argument.
The watered down argument has no merit IMO. we have heard that during expansion and UFA over the years and the NFL is more popular now than ever.
If you are saying that you are not going to watch the two more games on week 1 of the playoffs I think you are lying. Much less all the games whatsoever. The threat is meaningless here and it rings hollow in NFL front offices I imagine.

There are already 12 teams in now. And most every other 4 round tournament that I have heard of has 16 teams.
The NBA has 30 teams and 16 teams in their playoffs. I never hear complaints about how the NBA season doesn't mean anything.
We would have gotten into the playoffs a couple more times in the last several years.
I don't know. I just get the impression that this has more to do with inertia than anything.

Most teams in the NFL are big city teams. I flipped through the standings over the last 10 years and several teams are benefitting. I think what it does is allowing every franchise a chance to make the playoffs once every five years or so. Browns, Panthers, and Jags fans need to be kept engaged with a playoff birth every now and then.

12-16-2012, 08:59 PM
I would be cool with adding 1 more team per conference. 7 teams would allow only the top team to have a bye, which is how it should be. The other 6 play in the wild card round. Then the 3 winners advance to the divisional round to join the top seed.
6 wild card games would be outstanding, 12, 3:30, and 7 for the 3 games. Give the 2 seed in each conference a home prime time game vs the 7 seed.
Wild Card Round: 6 games
Divisional Round: 4 games
Championship Round: 2 games
Super Bowl: 1 game

Deserve is relative to the rules that we play by. If you change the rules such that the 2^4 teams make the playoffs the those 16 teams deserve to be there.

Their goals seems to me to be to make money. There is no guarantee that it won't be the Bills that are the 15th place team. more games leads to more TV revenue which is the bread and butter of the NFL.

Why? Bracketing in that just sounds like a pita. Most every tournament in the world includes powers of 2 ie 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64.
At least there is a logical explanation to going to that format. It's bloody mathematically symmetrical. 18 and 14 not so much.

When they pull out a 9-7 season against a stacked division why not send them to the playoffs?
it actually makes the regular season more meaningful because fewer teams will be eliminated before December. Instead of giving up hope at 7 or 8 losses fans will wait until 9 or 10 losses. There would be no more byes but seeding and home field advantage are still important so teams would not play soft once they clinch.
