I don't own any of these, but I do know that the Nexus 10 is something else to consider.

I'd go nexus 10. Cheaper than those 2, better resolution than the 3rd and 4th gen ipads, stock android (meaning fastest possible updates straight from google)

My understanding is with the release of Jelly Bean (4.2) android is really coming into it's own and a better option than IOS. I've got an old clunker still running on gingerbread so I am not qualified to speak from first hand experience.

Absolutely.
But if it doesn't have to be an android tablet, Acer W510 is worth checking out. Here we are talking a Windows 8 X86 tablet, so it will be fully compatible with the typical stuff people run on a PC or laptop.

You are more likely to keep using your iPad once you get it than any other device:

So if you want something that you and the family will use, get the iPad. If you want a hypothetically superior device that will collect dust, get something else.

very well written biased story. It all comes down to the user. I bought a 3rd gen ipad the day it was released.
Loved it. Screen was amazing. Battery lasted what seemed forever.
Did not like the fact i had to reinvest in my apps I already owned. I had to use the stale OS look of iOS and couldn't change anything about it.
I ended up taking it back after 3 weeks.

The app selection and the screen format are what sold me on an iPad last March. I switched from an Android tablet (Asus Transformer) and haven't regretted it for a second.

As EE that specializes in microcontrollers, I will pretty much never ever purchase Apple products. Manufacturing practices, QC, pricing relative to performance, their patent applications and the East Texas judges that allow it, compatibility and licensing policies, and the typical insipid style over substance of the Apple fanboys just turn me off to that company.
At a recent Apple convention the most focused topic was that the icons for Lion and iOS looked too old fashioned and real. Wood borders were not as avante garde as the new Windows 8 UI art style apparently. Bunch of pretentious pukes.

Same here.
I didn't think I'd use my Nexus 7 as much as I do but it's become my go to device for surfing the web, reading, and playing games in bed.

iPad guy here. Bought the last version 1 month ago. Haven't used any Android based tablet but I am sure both are equally good. You can't go wrong.
My only suggestion is if you are undecided, go with the one that uses the same OS with your phone. It will make it easier for you.

Why would you have to do that?
99.99% of apps i've purchased for devices are on android and developers wont let you transfer licenses due to piracy and such concerns

Nexus 7 or 10.
I would get the 7 if I didn't already have an Asus TF700 tabby.

For a full-size tablet, this isn't really a question.
For a 7" tablet, depends on if you want to spend less than $320.

I have both platforms. And ill say Android is far superior. Apple is smooth and reliable but its not customizable for the user. Thats androids biggest win over apple IMO. Ill take user experience over anything apple has anyday.

Only querstion I have is the Nexus 7 too small for me 42 yo "mature" eyes. Thoughts? I have an Ipad II and it is okay but also have HTC Android phone and love it-- the apps, ecosystem, syncing possibilities... Thus want an android tab and love the value of the Nexus 7...just the readability/potential eye strain that keeps me fr pulling the trigger. True user exp testimonials appreciated.

Hmm. It's a lot bigger than your phone. If the full size iPad is adequate size and you are happy with that size, then I would go with the Nexus 10" rather than going smaller.
I'm a few years younger than you, but I don't have any trouble reading on mine. Although, if I was I can always zoom in or make the default font size larger. It has a very nice and shape screen. If you want the smaller foot print and you are worried about reading, I would worry about it too much. Head to a store like Bestbuy or something that sales them and take a look at it.

Thanks. I'm torn betwixt the the 10 vs 7. I have read that currently the Nex 7 is better due to most prgms are geared toward the 7" display. I won't be reading books, have older Kindle for that, and will use heavy twitter, apps, and watch videos. Also really like the Currents and Flipboard, etc curation apps and wonder if they will degrade on the smaller tab compared to 9.7 Ipad II. Was recently accosted at mall by Samsung promo outfit and the 7 tab at first blush seemed fine to me-better than I imagined. Leaning===>Nex7. Again value is very high there! Wish it had a pen as the Sammy Note 10.1, which wld seal the deal.

Deep gray. I thought white was a little feminine. Might as well be pink, not that there's anything wrong with that...

I have this exact same question. One of these tablets is my Christmas present from my parents. I am leaning towards iPad after reading and watching numerous reviews.
I am really indecisive about which one to buy. I played with both at Best Buy, both were fun. I have a macbook that I have had since 2005 or 2006. LOVE it. I also work on a PC too. It gets really annoying more often then not.
iPad had better reviews when it came to screen quality (the newest one) and better apps according to reviews. The Galaxy has a stylus which can be a selling point, but you can buy one for the iPad too. I don't know how much I would use one really.
Anytime I have asked which tablet to get it's been a 50/50 split on which to get. Even got that when I asked different Best Buy employees.
I also lean towards the iPad because my Apple products have outlasted any PC we have ever owned. I still use a very old iPod. Runs as good as the day I got it for Christmas back in 2005. It's a little bulky compared to the news ones, but still functional and has a lot of space on it.
Whichever model I choose my dad says he is already getting me the 32GB. And whichever model I choose will determine my next phone choice too. Currently have a Droid Incredible 2 and I could take it or leave it. Have never loved it.
Though at this point I am still torn on which one to get. Obviously, I am not getting it by Christmas since I haven't decided yet.
What made you go with the Galaxy over the iPad?

well, I do in fact have an ipad 2. It's fine but I feel confined. I don't need training wheels and after using my android phone I like the possibilities. Just like both the process of personalizing my user experience abt as much as the result itself.
Important to bear in mind that there is no perfect product. And what's highly valuable to me may not be for you. IPad certainly has edge in display. A 10 vs 9.2 let's say. Not determinative to me.

Does yours lock up? Mine has 3 or 4 times since the upgrade. Also, it quit connecting to the internet for a day. It would connect to my router but nothing else.

I can tell you its been a breeze to get an iPhone/iPad shoutcast player. Android can vary from whoever is making the device. One player can work non the nexus, but not an s3. Sucks when tryingvto develop a single solution.

"What made you go with the Galaxy over the iPad?"
1. The OS, Android.
2. features.
3. Can expand memory.
4. it's not an ipad.

I got the iPad 4, 64 GB for Christmas. It takes some getting used to, but loving it so far. Now, just patiently waiting for the screen protector and cover to get shipped.
Didn't like that I had to change some settings to get iTunes to work. WTH Apple? You would think they would get all those kinks worked out before launching an update. I found instructions on how to get it working and have successfully transferred my music over.
I'm looking forward to seeing what this machine can do.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Just bought my third iPad (this one a Mini) last month. I love them. I've dabbled with Android but have never been happy with the spit and shine of Andoid vs IOS.
