View Full Version : For all you Zimmer haters

Parcells said in his PC that Zimmer put in a lot of overtime during the break studying the 3-4. Remember last time Zimmer thought his job might be on the line and had to change his philosophies? He turned our team into a cover 2 unit and suddenly, we we went from one of the worst defenses in the league to one of the best. He's about to do it again. Zimmer is the man for defensive spiritual awakenings. For all you Zimmer haters out there, you have to at least give him credit for not changing his philosophy on defense just once to suit the team, but twice now. We're going to have one hell of a versatile front seven this year. I think a lot of you who have blamed Zimmer for our problems are going to be red-faced when you see what this man is capable of after some quality drafts and free-agent additions under Parcells. For all you who put last year's problems solely on Zimmer, be sure to give him credit if our defense becomes of the league's best this year.

However I do understand the post and am hopeful Zim can turn it around this year. He's got the players to do it.

I'm still a Zimmer hater and think he is, as one sig puts it, the "Village Idiot". I think if we have any success on defense next year and beyond, it will be because of Parcells' influence. What else do you expect Parcells to do but try and show encouragement for his lame DC. I'm still taking a wait-and-see attitude.

Good post WG! There will be the Zimmer haters out there like Hollywood Henderson and Wolverine, but in my mind, the blame can' be placed soley on Zimmer, we had some significant injuries that took it's toll on our D unit. Most of you know who they are too.

I have faith in Zimmer. So does Parcells. Sit back and relax all you Armchair QB's, and watch this young group of guys produce!

Parcells did say he told Zimmer..."when I say it,(move to the 3-4), you better be ready to move, because it won't be a suggestion!"

Parcells is taking no prisoners this year! He even said the off-season work is better this year than last year.

Parcells blames the players first and to some extent the position coaches(esp Jeffcoat). Replacing 5-6 starters speaks volumes about who he thinks is at fault.

Trublue:
I once thought zimmy might become a coach with half a clue...

But let me back up in todays history lession...
It was HIS idea to be an aggressive team way back when...ATTACK...

He spent all offseason TEACHING & developing his new scheme...
We heard all offseason how we had perhaps the best front 4 since the orig. Doomsday...

Then, we ran into Filthy on opening day...
Anyone recall the "pickle juice game"?

All game long, we were just a step out of position from making a big play, instead they made them...It was a summer of sweltering heat and we even had the HOT side of the field...

So does zimmy WUSS spend the next week COACHING? Developing his players & scheme??????????????????????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

He completely scraps "HIS" scheme and we go passive & predictable and give up record amounts of yardage, the most 200 yard rushing games in team history and so on & so forth....

No conviction...No faith in his own ability, no idea what to do next...

2 years ago we see a ESPN close up before the big Sunday night game again vs Filthy...

zimmy WUSS is shown in meetings with our D players...TEACHING them NOT to rush the passer (McChunk)...

Fast foward to the game & McChunk does in fact have all day to pass & easily finds wide open players for TD's as the players are just doing what they have been taught...

Closeup to campy the clown & he is red faced and he is YELLING at the clueless idiot zimmy...(You don't have to be a lip reader to hear him)
RUSH THE F**King passer!

Of course he has also been the DB's coach forever as well and we NEVER even see a DB ever play the ball...Do we? But we always lead the NFL (Or close to it) in PI calls against us....

We are last or near last in the only D stats that matter....

Anyway...I have been showing examples (every game) of dozens of poor moves or lack of moves for 4-5 years now, if some of you don't know he can't coach, you never will...

Parcells has taken over on D and everyone should be glad its the 3-4 baby!

I think the passive and predictable has more to do with the injuries that decimated our secondary more than a coaching flaw with Zimmer. You blitz, you pay. Both him and Parcells didn't trust our defense without a veteran competent corner opposite Newman, and the great Darren Woodson leading them. And I also ask you with what were we supposed to attack with? Have you seen our linebackers? The best pass rushers were all low round or free agent rookie pick-ups. The defensive line was worthless without Ellis and Glover. Poor Roy Williams who plays best near the line had to stay back all night helping out the new knucklehead corner who seemed to change every week.

I promise you one thing!!! If Zimmer was so lame; Parcell's wouldn't tolerate him and he would be gone. I think Parcells has developed a liking for Zimmer and his work ethic/dedication. Get used to Zimmer being around for a long while, he is at the front of the line when it comes to the next Cowboy's head coach.

The thing that really irks me is those who bash Zimmer non stop will never give Zimmer any credit if/when the defense drastically improves this sesason. They will instead just give the credit to Parcells, it makes absolutely no sense.

Zimmer has fielded aweful defense's, but never a great defense, I guess thats why I can understand why he is hated. I can't see why he has so many supporters. Even when we were ranked #1 in D, the defense wasn't great, it was marginally good. Bend but don't break. We hardly created turnovers and we rarely ever put pressure on the QB. I hope Zimmer is going to be BPs puppet this year, and BP tries to teach him how to run a defense.

With probably 5 new starters on defense(Fergusson, Henry, Spears, Ware, and Burnett) to go along with players like Glover, Ellis, Dat, Roy, and Newman, Even if we add J.A.G at FS, this defense can be dominant again. Zimmer won't have any excuses this year.

Rush the passer huh? Who's going to do that? Ekuban, Wiley, Carson? Who's going to blitz? Let's blitz, I bet Frazier will do great in 1 on 1 out there. Come on, it's not Zimmer, let's just face it, we were 6-10 for a reason last year. We just didn't have enough playmakers. We had a team that had a good core of players, but some pieces missing. We built on our foundation, and it will show this year. Zimmer is probably creaming his trousers at this very moment.

I have been critical of Zimmer in the past. But....I am more critical of the scheme than the man. So if the man is willing to change schemes...then I have no issue.

The fact is that Parcells is going to be running the defense this year. Zimmer is going to be his disciple. Zimmer should benefit from the education.

sure as hell looks like the 3-4 has arrived.
We can now aggressively ATTACK teams.

AL S is as good as gone. Carson may have issueS.

NT and FS today.

I'd rather loose fighting versus this passive 4-3 cover 2 we have used too long. We pressured no one and were easily beaten down.

I have never liked Mike Zimmer as a coach. He sucked as the DB coach and he has sucked as the DC. I keep hearing about how the lack of talent or injuries are to blame, not Zimmer but I disagree.

Other teams have suffered more injuries than we have and still put a good defense on the field. Other teams had even less to work with in talent but when they brought in a new DC with a clue (Chargers with Wade Philips and Redskins with Gregg Williams) their defenses turned around.

Everyone points to 2003 when we had the #1 defense but that is a misnomer. We were #1 in terms of total yards which means nexxt to nothing in terms of effectiveness. We were near the bottom in turnovers, and negative plays.

Negative plays is the true barometer for a defense, not yardage. How often did you pressure the QB, force him to make a mistake, force him to get rid of the ball before his receivers were into their routes, force an INT, force a fumble, force the offense into 2nd and long, 3rd and long, etc. Those are the things that define a top defense and we haven't been near the top in those areas since Dave Campo took over as DC in 1995 (actully 95 was the last year but after that we have stunk).

The "bend-but-don't-break" scheme we have used looks good because it limits yardage but it does nothing to put pressure on the offense and teams can exploit it at will when they need to (ever notice how teams seem to score a TD right after we do? Or how often we have given up late leads?). I blame the scheme more than the man but it was the man who decided to stick with the scheme so...

Parcells has confidence in Zimmer for some reason so I will give him the benefit of the doubt and blame the scheme we have run since Campo's tenure for our lousy defense but this year Zimmer will have no more excuses to throw out there. He will have the talent and Parcells is going to give him a lot more direction regarding the scheme.

Actually, this year will be more a test of Parcells than for Zimmer as he will be the one directing the defense more than Zimmer.

Just my 2-cents.

I've never understood the Zimmer hating. two years ago we had the #1 defense in the league with a lot of marginal talent. That was at a time when Parcells was letting his coaches coach and he was just evaluating. Then last year Parcells started to meddle with everything including defense and the talent was even lower than the year before; but it's Zimmers fault that we dropped to #14 (or whatever it was). It's just amazing to me.

Well put Thumper...

zimmy has always failed at stopping teams when we needed to...

What was the stat that was so amazing?
We lost like 18 games in 2 years with leads going into the 4th 1/4...

He never plays our talent to their strengths...Roy would be a major force in many other cities...It takes one clueless fool to make him a non issue...
"Occupy & engage" always loses...Unless the team we are playing is awful on offense...
I bet zimmy has the NFL record for allowing rookie QB's to beat us too...

Blitz? He doesn't know how? I always cringe when he blitzed tiny dat, who was always easily picked up by the small tiki Barber's of the NFL...
Parcells doesn't/didn't have "his" guys to take over on D, but now we have hired the "Cuse" coach & Todd Bowles...actual NFL level talent...

This is zimmy WUSS's last year here...
He can't coach or develop players, never could...We deserve so much better and now Parcells is taking over!

Take off the rose colored glasses and admit, the guy is a clueless idiot!

There's no "almost" about it in some cases. If our D does well, Parcells will get all the credit for "taking over." If there are any problems it will be Zimmer's fault.

A bit cartoonish, but that's the way it is with some.

I suppose it begins with the defensive rating system. I agree with Aikmans assesment that the rating systems need to be updated to truly reflect the output on the field.

I am simply not a fan of the bend but don't break defense. We cause to few turnovers and to few sacks. I want a defense that can take control of the game again. Like Philly or NE's defense.

The system worked when we had an all pro CB (Deion) or an all pro DE (Haley). But is has not been a force for some time now...including 2 years ago.

You win 2 Super Bowls, turn 3 franchises around. You get that destinction and credit.

Zimmer is being told to play the 3-4 this year, not optional. We are going to be an attacking aggressive football team. You might see 3 to 4 more big, fast, smart and strong football players added. Time to churn the tiny guys.

A bit cartoonish, but that's the way it is with some.Yeah I know. Too often DC's get run off when the blame should really be placed on the personnel. With better personnel, we should have a better defense next year. Forget the fact that D dropped from #1 to middle of the pack, if Zim was such a bad coach, he would have been tossed like the other coaches at the end of the season.

Let's see Haley's teammates include Russell Maryland, Tony Casillas, Jim Jeffcoat, Tony Tolbert. Leon Lett and Jimmie Jones. With a linebacker corps of
Kenny Norton, Robert Jones, Dixon Edwards, Darrin Smith.

The fact is each and everyone of those players would start and be a star on todays team, Now is it the the system that makes the stars or the stars that make the system? its all so confusing.

The fact that now that Zimmer will finally have some players on his squad, but any improvement in their play will be credited to Parcells while he receives no credit for the moderate (some would say incredible given the level of talent he's had to work with) success he's had without any playmakers on defense. Tells me more about the Zimmer bashers than I think they really want to let out.

The real fact is Zimmer has never had the players to play a pressure defense, but now if it turns out he does and it is successful it will be because of Parcells. Yeah right!!!!!!!!!

I did not say anything about Zimmer...but I did attack the scheme.

Who drafted the players that we played with on defense the last two years ? Who drafted the players yesterday and who drove the FA signings ?

Sure...players make the difference....but you have to choose the right players. Zimmer, I'm sure, had a lot of input into the players that were on the field over the last several years.

Zimmer will be a better DC from the experience he is about to pick up from PArcells over the next couple of years.

Sorry, I will strike the name Zimmer from my post and insert the word scheme. However the point remains the same, I've heard a lot of thrashing the defense but NO-ONE has shown me how to play outstanding defense without outstanding players.

And I will bet that the basic strategy of forcing offenses to make long sustained drives remains, The difference will be that now in passing situations we will have some athletes to unleash off the corners.

Jimmy Johnson knew how to evaluate players for his scheme.

Parcells knows how to evaluate players for his scheme.

This years defense will be much improved from the last 4-5 years.

A truly good defense should equate to more than 5-6 wins per year...regardless of the offense. Good defense wins games.

Our past W-L record is the evidence that I stand on.

if we trust in Bill, we have to assume that Zimmer is the type of coach Parcells wants on his staff, and therefore in Zimmer i trust. he seems adaptable, and its an advantage to his career that he has run several different defensive schemes. he may end up being HC - its not inconceivable.
but under Parcells he will have to prove himself constantly, along with everyone else. he has the talent on the field, he has the mentor, he has the support of the owner/gm - this is the year we will see if Zimmer has what it takes. but whether he actually does or not, i have not the slightest idea...

There was an article today in the press mentioning how Bill is dictating Zim and the other coaches get up to speed on the 3-4. I give Zimmer big props for twice having the flexibility to change his scheme, whether it was because his job was on the line before he installed the Tampa Bay style D, or now when it looks like the 3-4 may soon become the BASE D. Many DCs are so wedded to their particular philosophies or schemes, they refuse to adapt.

Parcells 3-4 was the epitome of the "bend don't break" himself, so that philosophy shouldn't get in the way. I also think Bill owes ZimmyWuss bigtime, after overevaluating the Stewarts and Brooks of this league last season. After all it wasn't Zim telling Bill he could turn Pete Hunter into Marcus Coleman last spring. Bill pretty much handcuffed Zim with a pansy Dat Dud end rush, still not enough rest for La'Roi (finally we may get to see what a sufficiently spelled Glover can do), no consistent interior push , a second year CB caught weekly on an island, and a Pro Bowl quality MLB forced to cover too many mistakes of others. Bad Angle Dixon, geez.

I have to hand it to Parcells for being a man of his word. When he was originally hired by Jerry it was reported that he committed to try and make it work with the players that he inherited.

He gave the young defensive players 2 years to show what they could do. And now he is moving on with Plan B.

I also like the way that he is handling Zimmer. But it does make complete sense. Parcells is going to be running the defense for the forseable future.....so it's not like he had to go out and find a DC who was experienced in the 3-4.

Parcells it obviously a fan of Zimmers. Parcells has made comments about Zimmers approach to the game...his thoroughness. This is actually going to be a very good fit. Rather than have a DC who comes to the table with all the answers, he will have a DC who is coming to the table with the expectations of learning a new system.

The key will be Ware-- how well is he utilized from day one. We can't have the 11th pick overall on the bench 75% of the time or inactive every game. He also can't be sitting back in coverage. A special player like Roy should be free to cause destruction with a front seven like we now potentially will have.

Yes. It is all about the scheme.

It is important to note that our first 2 picks would not necessarily have been good picks if we were looking to remain in the 4-3.

Ware is a tweener who would not hold up well as a DE in the 4-3. And Spears lacks the speed to be a pass rushing DE in the 4-3. But both fit perfectly in the 3-4 scheme.

I have made the argument for some time now that the 4-3 is an interesting scheme because you do not have to find that rare commodity which is the pass rushing DE in a 4-3. It is much easier to find a pass rushing OLB in a 3-4.

Dallas 2005 draft is weighty evidence for this theory.
