Chris Canty, DE I think from Virginia, man are we stocking up on the front 7.

What the heck happened to Anntajj Hawthorn? Was projected as 1st rounder a month or so ago, draft tracker still has him waiting around, too good a value to pass up?

Passed on the safety from UNC. They must have thought that the Pats would take Canty and really wanted him.

I love the DL emphasis. DEEP.

why,why,WHY ???Another DE

I have no issues at all w/this pick. Would rather go w/ the bpa then reach for a S or WR. After watching Mcnabb turn texas stadium into his own personal sandlot last yr and the packers score early and often on pretty much every possesion I want to get after the QB like we havent done for 10 yrs. Love this pick

yup, just like Kiper just said had it not been for the injury in the 2nd half of 2004. Time to get after the QB!

Like the guy, Hate the trade. Did not need to give up next years pick for a high risk guy who may not even play this year.

Certainly looks 3-4 now. Canty has injuries, will he be able to contribute this year.

Still like the versatility to play both fronts though.

I love the pick. I dont like losing the 4th either but if you are getting a player like Canty its worth it. Would you trade a 5th and a 4th for a 2nd rounder next year? I would and if you think of Canty as a draft and follow type. Dont expect him to play this year then you have a guy who when helalthy (this time next year) will be an easy 2nd rounder.

I agree. Maybe I am being too much of a homer but I don't think we gave up that much. A 5th this year for a late 4th. Then next yrs 4th, which should hopefully be a mid round 4th at worst late 4th at best pick for a guy many felt was the top player on the board in day 2. After watching our pathetic 4 man rush for the past 10 yrs I am absolutely thrilled about the guys we selected. S and WR are needs but we didn't reach for need and took quality guys. I had our draft as a B+ yesterday and think we are at a A- right now, despite losing our 4th next year.

UppityCracker2
04-24-2005, 11:59 AM
Yep, they said that if it weren't for injuries that he would have been a late 1st or early 2nd round pick.

yeah cause Canty played DE in a 3-4 in Virginia?I didn't know much about canty. I thought he was just another DE. We were pretty stacked at DE in the 3-4, canty I guess spells doom for ellis or glover or both. Why some are excited I don't know...

Mickey said that he has a detached retina from the bar fight, and it will either need surgery now or after the season. Along with the leg injury, this might be a guy you stash on IR for a year, let him completely heal from everything, bulk up, learn the system and you got a 1st round talent for a couple of Day 2 picks.

rw54
04-24-2005, 12:01 PM
I think he needs eye surgery. Probably means IR or PUP for this year. Great pick.

Sorry posted at the same time.

It really could be. Even if Canty has to sit a year... when Philly is picking with our 4th and 5th next year, we'll be sitting there with a late 1st early second round talent in Canty.

If he plays this year... all the better.

I hope they did their homework on the medical and character issues. Injuries, bar fights, and injuries from a bar fight?

I like the talent, but I hate losing the #4 next year. If he checked out ok on the character issues, I could get excited about his potential.

Guys on IR don't really learn much...once on IR they aren't allowed to practice with the team at all....just rehab.

I don't think we'd have made this deal if we thought he wasn't going to training camp this year.

I can see Canty being utilized like Ware, a stand up end playing LB. He won't start, but he will come in off the bench. Glover will come off the bench to spell Ferguson or to play a four-man front at times. This defense is going to be so frickin' nasty.

No... Canty doesn't have the speed to be a standup end.

Canty doesn't have character issues. Reportedly he was trying to break up the fight. His mother is a pastor. He's regarded as a super standup guy, and was voted team captain. Im pretty sure he came highly recommended by Al Groh.

The injuries are a red flag, I agree.

Canty is a stand up guy who just had injury concerns and I am sure the VA connection sold Parcells on the guy...

1st rd value in a guy who DID play DE in the 3-4

Still doesn't change my opinion of the trade though. Very good value once he heals.

Correct. He was attempting to break it up. It really cracks me up the way people hear or read that a player has "character issues" and assume that he's a felon or a head case.

Canty's injuries are relatively insignificant too. He had a broken leg as a sophomore, which is a non-issue. He pulled knee ligaments. There was no tear. His eye could keep him out of mini-camps, but a detatched retina isn't like a blown knee. It's a serious injury, but as far as football goes, you don't run on your eyes.

I wasn't saying he had character issues, I said that I hoped Dallas checked out character issues. It seems like a good idea considering he has an injury from a bar fight. I knew nothing about the guy when they picked him. From what others have said, character shouldn't be a problem. Good pick.

this move spells 4-3 more than 3-4 imo.

Dude - give it a rest. Its obviously the 3-4.

You realize Canty played the 3-4 for Virginia? Yup - Al Groh their coach coached under Parcells.

Spears - yup he played the 3-4 too. Both 3-4 DE's.
Ware - Obviously is moving to Linebacker at 255 - 3-4 OLB

Draftinsiders on Canty

6-7 280

They compare him to Seymour and TREVOR PRYCE, in size, athleticism, versatility and intangibles. Top 50 prospect and future Pro Bowl performer. May be best value in this draft!

projects to LE in 3-4

Canty
Ferguson
Spears

James
Dat
Burnett
Ware

We just added 4 future stars that can play 3-4 in 4 rounds. Amazing drafting.
Canty is a top 15 overall pick if not for injuries.
