Some of you may remember the Tucson High School basketball player, Joe Kay, who was hurt in an after game celebration. I wrote his Mom to ask how Joe is doing. She wrote back and sent some articles about her son. I thought I'd share.

I do remember that you wrote me within just a few days after Joe's injury. Thank you for checking in about his recovery. After seven weeks in a Phoenix hospital, Joe was released on March 26. On March 29, he began a full-time full-day rehab program in Phoenix. (We live in Tucson, but we have rented an apartment in Phoenix for his rehab here.) He is walking -- slowly and deliberately, but without a cane. Much of his speech has returned. He is still very concerned about his right upper-extremity. In three weeks, he'll be adjusting his rehabilitation schedule in order to see a hand/arm specialist daily. His spirits remain high, and he is working very very hard every day. His goal is to walk into Stanford in September 2005. Here are a few links to newspaper stories that give more details:

Thank you so much for your support of Joe.

Its funny that you posted this because I was just thinking of him the other day. I am really glad that he is doing as good as he is. Thoughts and prayers are still with him.

Hos,

Thanks for providing the links and the update. It's really wonderful that he's slowly making progress on his road to recovery.

I also have to give you props for being the humanitarian that you are. You didn't have to do what you did in contacting the family. I guarantee you that she, the family and even Joe are overwhelmed with the positive reinforcement sent by emails such as yours. I think it speaks volumes as to your character.

Congrats to Joe but equal congrats to you.
