Sound like a good guy(good natured)....

I think Spears may well wind up being my favorite current Cowboy next to Roy. I love his attitude and I just have this feeling that he is going to kick some major tail in the NFL. Can't wait to see him on the field!

Spears is going to be a star.
He's exactly the kind of player Parcells wants, both physically and pshycologically.
He's a brute. He may be the most physical DE the Cowboys have ever had and is as close to Reggie White that I've ever seen.
Just watch this guy... he's going to be a force from day one.

Wow, could you imagine if Spears turns out to be the next Reggie and Ware turns out to be the next LT. Could you imagine the nightmares that would create for opposing offenses!?!? I know...I Know...I'm geting waaaay ahead of myself, but it's fun to dream about!

Both coming off the same edge of the formation.
Teams will employ the old sprint away play. :skins: :jints: :iggles:

Yes he is, AF...
Spears strikes me as one of those guys for whom the game might have been too easy at the college level -- that does happen. And then defenses focused so much attention on him, they were able to slow him down at times, but that's not uncommon. Some of the best defensive linemen that have come out the last few years haven't had great stats their final college year, but they shine in the NFL playing next to other good players.
I've been wanting us to take a truly talented defensive lineman for a long time now... I still can't believe we got Spears at 20!

Let's take this wonderful dream a step further. Both Spears and Ware coming off the edge making the opposing team employ rollouts away from the pressure, only to have a blitzing Roy Williams and a rangey, big hitting LB in Kevin Burnett blasting through to blow up the play before it has a chance to develop.
And let's not forget how good Dat Nguyen can be when he has players in front of him. Also, I expect BIG things this year, and for years to come from #56.... Mr. Bradie James.
I truly believe that before Bill Parcells leaves, and even after he is gone that the Cowboys will have one of the scariest defenses around. I have this gut feeling that Parcells will have the Cowboys playing much like his former dominating defense that he built with the NY Giants back in the late 80's.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not at all doubting you Lab, but could you give me some examples? I'm trying to think of the best DLs that have come out recently (Played 3 years or less) and done really well.
My favorites are Suggs, Freeny, Kevin Williams, and Charles Grant for instance. But I thought they all really excelled in their senior season?

If memory serves, Strahan didn't have great numbers coming out.
I don't think Kris Jenkins had huge sack numbers either.
Dewayne Robertson only recorded 5 sacks his senior year.
I think both Seymour and Stroud had very average sack totals there senior years and they played on the same line at Georgia.

Richard Seymour was not highly reguarded coming out of college... his last year at GA was not great...

I was trying to use recent examples primarily because there has been drastic changes in both Coaching and Physical Training in college over the last 10 years. Many programs now are running systems near the same level as the profesional teams. That's why I look for players who excell in those systems or at the very least worry about players who are still being ranked higher because of "potential" after spending 3 or more years in such a system.
Idealy I'd take a guy that improved every year he played. Those are guys that I think have proven that they are coachable and have a good work ethic.

In all honesty, I was thinking more about the tackles than the ends... So I wasn't really going on sack numbers. I just remember reading an article a year or two ago about how many defensive tackles lately (Henderson was one, I can't remember the other) often have worse numbers in their senior (or final) years than they did in eariler seasons because their reputations precede them and they see lots of double teams. Since Spears is technically an end, maybe I shouldn't have applied that to him. I guess I still think of him as definitely a strongside end or, really, a tackle... Definitely an inside player instead of a speed "edge" guy.
But you're right, the ends usually do put up big numbers.

He was drafted 6th overall and is a Perennial Pro Bowler.
He was highly regarded by those in the know. :D

Yea, the Pats got blasted for picking him so high... taking an DT that needed to get stronger and produce more... move him to DE... sounds like Shaun Cody, huh?? but, his stock wasn't high entering the draft... the Pats just knew what they were doing...
did anyone see them drafting Mankins this year??

The best part about this is that they're both young, and they'll both be here for the next decade. What a nice core on defense with Ware, Spears, Roy Williams, Newman and even Henry.
