Only caught the tail end of the interview.

You make the clubs as a UFA out of Sam Houston and don’t play in ’03 because of a shooting. Did you think your career was over?

It crossed my mind, but very briefly. If I recall correctly, I was working on my backpedal in my hospital hallway the night that I was shot. The nurse told me that I had been shot, and I should act like it. My friend asked me what I was doing and I told him I was getting ready for camp. I knew I could still play, the first thing I asked the Dr. was “When can I start working out?”. Because football is what I love to do.

The police report said that you were just at the wrong place, wrong time. You were just there picking up a friend, and it was a case of mistaken identity. Do you feel that the Cowboys still held it against you?

That was a part of it because Coach Parcells made it clear he didn’t want guys out there and partying, but to be honest with you I think in the end it all worked out for the best.

So you refuse to pick up phone calls at 1 AM when your friends call you for a ride?

Oh, let me tell you, my phone won’t even be on at 1 AM.

Do you read the paper and see guys released … Lance Schulters and Reggie Tongue. Cory Hall brought in for a workout. There must seem like there are 5,000 out of work safeties to you. Do you keep up with the transactions around the league and all the out of work safeties?

To be honest, I don’t hardly ever read the paper. I know I just need to focus on what I need to do, and not get caught up in the talk. So I try to stay away from the paper. If they bring in somebody, I’m cool. I’m just worried about what Keith does.

Shoot, I'd be overjoyed if he was just simply better than Dixon and Scott.

Well, I don't think you have to worry about that too much. At least not the Dixon part.

Keith is an instinctive player who loves the game... I'll take those kind of players any day. I think he'll be the guy back there, and I think he's going to do very well.

I guess it's just a hunch, but I think he's going to surprise a lot of people. He'll be surrounded by good players in the backfield and the pass rush should be much better than last year. Players tend to do well when put in situations like that... particularly if they're an instictive, ballhawking type.

I want the guy who's not going to get us beat by biting on play action passes. Coming down with 5 INT doesn't mean much to me if he's giving up three times as many TD's because savy QB's can manipulate him and position him all over the field with eyes or pump fakes.

We already have an playmaker at one safety spot. I want a guy who's not going to get us beat because he's trying to make a name for himself at the other spot. If that's Davis, so be it.

Very good point, IR... I want the same thing.

If Davis can be that guy... be the guy that follows his assignments and doesn't make mistakes... that'll be very good, because he's going to make some plays on the ball.

He'll get his INT's and big plays, like you said though, can he not make the big mistakes and play solid defense down to down. That's the question.

Killer is the guy I am rooting for to be our FS. I was struck by his knack for being around the ball on special teams. I also noticed when he laid the wood to kick returners. He just seemd to be involved in every special teams tackle or big play.
But the guy I really want is the guy who is the best player on the field. I don't care who it is. I would be doing cartwheels in my living room if we got George Teague type performance out of who ever wins the job.

Really i dont think Davis has to worry about PLay actioon, Roy's job is to go get the runner, thats why he was always out of posion, he had to protect against the run, and then go back and cover the pass, with davis i think he will be able to read a QB's eyes and NOT fall for simple pumps, and misdirections, we have very good DB coaches, that will help him learn to do that, i'm really rooting for the guy
