Just got back, and they're talking about the Hunter deal.
Mickey said if Hunter plays this year, they get a #5 this season, if Hunter smells it up, a 7th in 2007.
He also said that an NFL Scout he talked to said "If they get ANYTHING for Hunter, it'll be a STEAL"
Take it for what it's worth

Well, I'am thinking with the Jets problems at CB, D Abraham is talking retirement again, that Hunter is almost a lock to make the squad, so if we get a 5th this year I'll do a Cartwheel on Draft day!.

The jets are rumored to again be after Ty Law. If they get him does that make Hunter expendable to them? I would think he'll make the team with ease and prob do pretty well for them.

I heard the Chiefs were going to get Law. I would think that Hunter has a shot either way, unless he really stinks it up big time.

The Chiefs gave up on Law and signed Ashley Ambrose instead. They couldn't take a chance on Law's health after Eric Warfield got busted for another DUI and was suspended for 4 games.

Seriously though - a 5th for Hunter is probably a good thing, although I have to admit I was rooting hard for this guy to come around.

Going to NY is probably the best thing for him. I'm not real uptodate on the J-E-T-S....... Jets, Jets, Jets! but I know they have some DB issues. As I said earlier, Herm Edwards made his name as a DB coach and player so this is probably going to end up as a nice opportunity for Hunter. I hope he can make the most of it.
After all, 5th in 06 sound much better then 7th in 07.

Sounds more than fair to me. Wasn't Hunter a 5th round pick in the first place? We would basically be getting a do-over if he plays!

Football players are like cars.
They depreciate over time, especially if they do not perform.
Anyone who thinks we could have got a fifth with no conditions is kidding themselves.

I don't know - a fifth round pick for a "capable" starter with some NFL experience is well worth it. But then again, he is coming off major knee surgery. I'll take the 5th round pick and not look back (if that is indeed what we get)
Otherwise I would just as soon keep the guy around as 6 and 7 round picks rarely ever pay off.

This just in
Hunter to get trade he requested
Jets will send a draft choice to Cowboys
02:16 PM CDT on Thursday, July 14, 2005
By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING -- It took a little while, but it appears cornerback Pete Hunter is going to get his wish to play for another team.
The Cowboys have agreed to trade the disgruntled cornerback to the New York Jets for a conditional sixth-round draft choice that could improve to a fifth-round choice, if he meets certain incentives, two club sources said Thursday.
Hunter, who flew to New York on Wednesday, met with Jets’ officials on Thursday morning and passed a physical exam.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to be on the field," said Hunter, who has three career interceptions, "and I'm happy about having a chance to come home and play and all of the good stuff that comes with that."
The Cowboys were expected to use Hunter at free safety in the dime defense, which uses six defensive backs.
If Hunter is traded to the Jets, then Keith Davis, Izell Reese and Lynn Scott will compete for playing time in the nickel and dime defenses.
Hunter, a native of Atlantic City, N.J., was a fifth-round selection in 2002. He won the starting job in training camp last season after Mario Edwards signed a free-agent deal with Tampa Bay. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the third game against Washington and did not play again.
Hunter became upset with the Cowboys in March, when they signed free-agent cornerback Anthony Henry and gave him a $10 million signing bonus. The Cowboys wanted Hunter to consider moving to free safety, where he could compete for a starting job, but he balked.
Hunter, a restricted free agent, didn't get any nibbles in free agency and signed a one-year tender with the club for the minimum salary of $655,000. He participated in the club's off-season program and its three-day mini-camp.
Supplemental draft today: The NFL's supplemental draft is today, but the Cowboys aren't expected to make any selections. Two of the more attractive players are USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright and ex-Clemson receiver Roscoe Crosby.
Staff Writer Todd Archer contributed to this report.

For those that did not get to hear the Mickey call…
Bob: Mickey married off his 27 year old daughter
Mickey: Blah blah about wedding….
Bob: Pete Hunter got traded today?
Mickey: Yeah, I think it will be official sometime in the next hour or two.
Bob: Is this the same trade that was out there in May?
Mickey: Well, no because remember they were trading at that time the report was they were trading for the veteran injured Ray Mickens I believe it was.
Bob: What are they getting now?
Mickey: Draft choices.
Bob: Like what?
Mickey: My understanding is if he is somewhat of a player then they will get a fifth round pick next year. Which means they get back what they invested in him in 2002. If he amounts to basically nothing then they will get a 7th in 2007. But they are going to get something, and as one NFL scout told me if they get anything for him it will be a steal.
The kid had two very good chances with the team to be something and both kind of blew up in injuries. I don’t know if you remember, in 2002 he was going to be the slot nickel witch is not bad for a fifth round pick out of Virginia Union the year before. He was working there in that preseason game against Arizona he broke his forearm and he missed a month of practice the last couple of weeks of training camp.
He tried to play the first game, the opener, with a cast on his arm and that did not work out to well and I think he just put himself behind. He lost the job and got it back the last month after they traded Derrick Ross. Then he went into training camp the favorite to start at right corner. Then three games into the season he tears his ACL.
So, he really never got a break and I don’t think they could wait on him any longer and I think with what they did at the cornerback position in the off-season he kind of became expendable.
Bob: What do we got, 18 days?
Mickey: Two weeks from today the charter leaves for Oxnard. They have the opening press conference two weeks from tomorrow and then two weeks from Saturday they begin practice.

Clarence Hill reports a conditional sixth that can be a fifth.
If Spagnola is wrong, then we need a new beat writer for the official site immediately.

Does anyone know if Spagnola is going to torture us with color commentary during preseason. I like Babe and Sham but Spags has the charisma of a dirty toilet seat.

I agree. I just don't think Pete has a football body. His body weight is not proportional in any one area on his frame. He's kind of gangly....IMO.

That jumped out at me too CL. But again it's only one man's opinion.
One take is we keep Hunter but are forced to cut him. We get nothing. So maybe that's what he meant.
However, I read that as Hunter wasn't worth a late round pick. I don't think we have enough info to answer that but maybe this guy knows what he's talking about.
Oops. Sorry. Walked in and forgot to refresh the computer. So your post was not the last one. My bad for going over old stuff.

Hey Nors, what's the latest on that one?
Very low chance Law accepts FS money. Jets back in the game - he's running with Kersee the track dude and will be signed around 2nd week of TC by somebody.
Our only chance is he has no offers and gravitates back to Bill, after firing Postons....
