I spoke to Glover about his new role, and he said he’s okay with it. He’s taking it as a challenge, and he has faith that the best man will get to start. He says its not all about size at this position, there are things like speed and hand speed that have to be accounted for too. He’s weighing in at 288, but he said its likely he’ll be back down to his natural 282 by the time camp ends. He’s just such a professional you wouldn’t expect any less from him.
He’ll probably have his feelings hurt if he’s not called out as a starter coming out of the tunnel, but he said he’s using it as motivation. We really just have to wait and see how this all pans out. If the 3-4 is a disaster in preseason games or early in the season, Parcells can always go back to the 4-3 because everyone knows how to play it. He said he's had to make the kind of about face before in training camp, and it worked out well. The problem you have with the 4-3 is who do you sit on the bench … Ellis, Spears or Ware? And what do you do with Canty? No matter what they play, Greg Ellis and Glover can’t play 85-90 snaps a game like they were doing at the end of last year.
But they were running nickel defense yesterday with a front 4 of Ellis, Glover, Carson and Ware and it looked pretty impressive. Newman was playing the slot and they were blitzing him off the same side as Ware. Boy, that’s a lot of speed for the offense to account for on that one side.
Justin Beriault. Picked off a pass, two big hits including one behind the LOS which drew a lot of oohs and aahs from everyone. Looks like a tent pole. Weighs about 203. At one point Parcells walks up and gives him a pat on the back. Then Zim yells 30 yards away to Bariault to come over and Zim gives him a high five and sends him on his way. The kid has caught their eye. Their biggest concern about playing FS would be whether he’s out of his element away from strong safety, which is what he played in college, and how quickly can he learn all of the pass coverages and the check downs? So maybe he’s not starting FS in San Diego, but maybe by the time you get further into the season maybe he eases into role.
