I was interested to see who liked Jerry and who doesnt.
I personally think he is the best owner in football.
He is going to get us a new stadium, he brought us BP.
What do you guys think.

Any owner of the Dallas Cowboys could get us a new stadium. As far as an owner I love Jones, as far as a GM I can't stand him!

In this era of what have you done for me lately, I guess I'd have to say, as Jerry is today, I like him.
But the years after Johnson, were truly horrific. I think he could possibly have been the worst GM in the history of the sport.
It's always been my opinion that he used the organization for ego gratification....and it's always been my question, "How long would GM Jerry Jones have lasted with Owner Jerry Jones if they weren't two in the same?"
Campo, Coslet, Gailey, Switzer et al. Forcing incoming coaches to keep existing assistants...
Galloway for two number ones; Oj Santiago.
Some of the poorest drafts I think I've ever seen.Carver; Ekuban; Dixon; Goodrich; Page; S Williams; Bjornson; and on and on it goes.
All these were hallmarks of the years between Johnson and Parcells.
That said, you can only evaluate a person based on who he is today. And by that barometer, he seems to have finally learned his lesson. This is a very good thing indeed.
The next test will be when Parcells leaves.

He is a good owner because he wants to win above all else. He brought in Jimmy because he wanted to win. He kicked Jimmy out the door because he wanted to win and thought he could do it by himself. He hired Parcells because he wanted to win and realized that he couldn't do it on his own.
A great football mind? Hell No!
A man whose top priority is the Super Bowl and is willing to put his ego aside to do whatever it takes to get the Cowboys there? You Damn Right!

Perhaps he is that now...but he wasn't for 8 seasons.
As I said though, we can only evaluate him on who he is today.

I was just gonna say he is the best owner of any professional sports team in the world. I still wish he would hire a GM. He has proven he will do anything to field a winner and now knows what it takes to win championships. With the brilliant move of getting BP in here, it is just a matter of time until we have another Lombardi.

Jerry has had his share of mistakes--Allen contract, Galloway trade.
With that said, I think we should thank our lucky stars that we have an owner that cares enough about his team to spend the money and support the coaching staff.
After Campo I really wasn't sure what direction this franchise was headed in.
You bring in Bill Parcells, you know EXACTLY what you're getting. With that said, I can't come up with one owner that I would rather have rebuilding than the owner we have now.
God willing, Jerry will get another trophy before he leaves the front office to Stephen and Bill.
100% support for our current front office.

Agree with everything you said, except the Santiago part.
We gave up a seventh rounder for a guy that showed potential for several seasons.
He didn't work out. We tried. Santiago hasn't exactly set the league on fire since we let him go.
But we tried. For very little. The hallmark of a good GM.

As Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast, my friend". The Dallas political people (whatever you call them) aren't being very cooperative. They're already saying JJ might have to settle with renovating Texas Stadium. That would suck. I like Texas Stadium, but you'd think that with all the "Good" the Cowboys have brought to Dallas and the surrounding areas that the political officials would WANT to get a new stadium built to help boost the economy EVEN MORE.
Personally, I think it's all a matter of how much money JJ is willing to put DIRECTLY into their pockets.
Don't even try to act like there's no corruption in politics. ALL LEVELS of politics.

That was a 7th in 2001 AND a 4th in 2000. Pretty steep price if you ask me.

I think as someone else said, he's been a fantastic owner, and a subpar GM. But the other point to make is, even as a GM, he learns from his mistakes. He is adaptible. Would having a GM right now be a good thing? I'd argue no, because we wouldn't have been able to land the big Tuna. So I very much like the course we are going now. I also think he is one of the best owners in sports.

He has made some mistakes but I still think he is the best. I did not like him Firing Tom Landry and do not think Landry was the reason the Cowboys were so bad anyway. Landry was not given any payroll to pay the players and coaching staff so had to make the best with what he had. Jerry Jones came in and yes, I think Jimmy Johnson was a great Coach but the main reason Jerry Jones turned the Cowboys around is because he spent the money to get the players and coaching staff in here.
I do not know the actual numbers but I would be willing to bet that Jerry quadrupled the payroll in 4 years over what the Tom Landry era was. That got us to a back to back super Bowl wins. Was it worth it? I think so. I quarentee you if Jerry had not bought the team it would not have happened. Curly

Daniel Synder has tried the same thing as Jerry Jones and has not been any where near as successful at it. Curly
Bottom line is that Jones is a top tier owner in the realm of professional sports teams and despite his very public learning curve I'll bet nobody here wants to replace him. Jerruh is on the upswing...
Did anybody see that magazine cover with a cartoon of Jerry with devil horns on it that said "Is Jerry Jones the Devil?" I guess it made his granddaughter cry and came out at the height of his ineptitude. I have it someplace, a buddy from Texas sent it to me. Very funny.
Anyway, as a businessman and owner, Jerry is top notch. He needs to stay away from football related activities though. I think he has seen the light though and has given BP the green light. A trait of a good owner is someone who will make the adjustments needed for the betterment of the club, which I think Jerry will always do.

If you are saying that Red McCombs is a good owner, take it from me up until this year he hasn't even been mediocre! He is tighter with his spending than that Bimbo in Arizona. He paid big money to Moss (too much in my opinion) but other than that he has "starved" the defense the whole time he has been here! A great offense and a poor defense ain't going to get you much in this league......Jerry wins this contest easily! :p

I have wavered over the years on Jerry and whether I like him or not.
I hated the way Tom Lnadry was dealt with even though for 2 years prior to that event I had hoped Jimmy Johnson would be the man to replace him.
I immediately liked his fire and enthusiasm when he had his press conference. He said Jimmy would be worth 5 first round draft picks and in some ways, I think he was.
When the team really started rolling and he was swinging deals with sponsors opposite the NFL I really liked him. He was a gambler, a maverick, and maybe even a little of an outlaw.
When he said "Any of 500 guys could coach the Dallas Cowboys" I felt sick in the pit of my stomach, because I knew Jimmy was gone. When it finally happened I still remember where I was and what I was doign when I learned. I had to pull my car over to the side of the road. I remember thinking, "Please don't hire Barry Switzer."
The day he hired Barry, I hated Jerry Jones. The day he fired him I forgave him a little bit. Chan Gailey brought back some of that disgust. So did many of the drafts he ran during that time.
I didn't like Gailey but felt we made a mistake letting him go that quickly. I viewed Dave Campo as a Blue Light Special at K-mart. I kept thinking, "We're the Cowboys fans and we deserve better than nobodies for Head Coaches." I looked at the Los Angeles Lakers before Phil Jackson and then with him and I wondered what part of coaching matters did Jerry not get.
When Michael Irvin got injured I gained a whole new respect for Jerry Jones. When he left the football game to ride with him in the ambulance so he could keep Irvin's wife informed I thought that was pure class. I forgave a lot of past "sins" that day.
Waiving Troy Aikman instead of trying to negotiate a cap friendly deal and even more bad drafts put him back in my doghouse.
When he hired Bill Parcells and took a step back, I was back to respecting him.
Has he always made me happy? No. He waited way too long to put Tex Schramm in the Ring of Honor and some other deserving players need to be there too. I don't think he realizes how much that means to the fans. I still think the new stadium needs to be named after Tom Landry in some way.
A very big part of me wishes Jerry would just work on the new stadium deal and let Stephen move up to GM, or go hire Ron Wolf to be GM. As a businessman I think he is unparalleled in all of sports. I wish he focused on that all the time. His personnel decisions scare the crap out of me way too often.
He's a good, decent, Christian man and for that I like him. I don't think he is a malicious person at all. I think he deserves the Hall of Fame.
Yeah, I'd have to say I like him when the weights are all on the scales. It tips that way.

Can that be done and still put 100,000+ seats in it? If so, I'm all for that plan.

There is not another owner in sports today I would rather have than Jerry, he share the same passion for this team as anyone I have ever seen. This is not to say he has not made mistakes but guys who do not make mistakes from time to time are guys who are doing nothing to start with.

I'm not from Texas, so forgive me for a little ignorance, but don't the Cowboys have a tough time selling out the 65,000 that they already have?
Why does Teaxas Stadium need 100,000 seats?
Even last year they were selling those 4 for $99 specials.
He's a great owner....too bad he let his ego get in the way for 8 or so years and didn't allow a solid football GM to run things while he learned the ropes.
Lately I think he's done a decent job as GM, but even though it's his team, he screwed us over royally for a number of years.
