BUCK SHOTS

What to do with Antonio Bryant?
FIRST SHOT: I have a 16-year-old daughter who has thrown a couple of tantrums over the years. Sometimes the correct punishment is clear, and sometimes it's not.
I understand this cooling-off period that's going on between Big Bill and Antonio Bryant. I use it myself over major issues.
But penance has to be paid. In this case, an apology to the team is just a start. Respect [must be] paid to Big Bill in front of the team.
When the punishment is not clear with my daughter, we sit down after a cooling-off period, and I ask her what she feels should happen. A lot of the time her chosen punishment will exceed mine (she understands that a lightweight offer on her part will result in my worst-case scenario).
Big Bill and A.B. need to sit down and find a solution. Respect is a major issue here, so include [Bryant] in the decision process. He will bear his punishment with pride and come out a better person.
-- Karl Houck, The Colony
BUCKSHOT: Unfortunately for Bryant, Big Bill is not Dr. Phil.
SECOND SHOT: Hold onto Bryant as long as possible, let him [run] only the super-long routes, never throw the ball to him, then cut him in August.
-- Lawrence Lim, Plano
BUCKSHOT: Still in plenty of time for the Redskins to pick him up for that first Monday night game with the Cowboys (Sept. 27).
THIRD SHOT: Why are we even talking about getting rid of Bryant? He has his temper tantrums, but who cares?
Keyshawn Johnson is thirtysomething with temper tantrums, and the Cowboys still brought him in. And Keyshawn isn't even that good.
Keep the kid. He's going to be something once we get rid of the two old men [Johnson and Terry Glenn].
-- Bobby Moore, Los Angeles Air Force Base
BUCKSHOT: Well, "the kid" is a third-year player. It's time to grow up.
FOURTH SHOT: The Cowboys should suspend Bryant for the first regular-season game and tell him that if he disrespects his coaches again, he will be cut. He's a talented, passionate young man. Who didn't do something stupid at his age?
-- Keith Stone, Weatherford
BUCKSHOT: Or who'd admit it at the time?
FIFTH SHOT: The punishment should fit the crime. [Make it] a one-game suspension, $10,000 fine, and Bryant must wear Keyshawn's jockstrap on his head during practice sessions at training camp. Can't give up on him yet!
-- Bobby Dingler, Tyler
BUCKSHOT: This is just a hunch, Bobby. But I think Bryant would rather you give up on him.
Between readers
SIXTH SHOT: To Rob de Santos, Australian Football Association of North America:
Rob, I wish to apologize for my rather insensitive remarks [June 7 Buckshots] regarding Chad Hutchinson and Aussie rules football. He's obviously neither talented enough nor smart enough to play your game.
I should never have compared his gamesmanship with Bobby Fischer or Boris Spassky, both of whom would -- possibly -- have been adequate performers for you. What I said was that ol' Hutch has toughness ... [and] might try playing linebacker.
Now L.T. (Lawrence Taylor) will be writing in next. G'day, mate.
-- David Glick, Richardson
BUCKSHOT: I'm more afraid of the chess-heads writing in.
