View Full Version : Why so giddy about Thompson?

If JJ wasn't on the roster, I could understand the building excitement. But even if he makes the team, he doesn't stand to get a lot of carries. I'd rather trade him for a viable RT candidate.

Because teams carry more than 1 RB, we sure as heck do not want Jones to carry the ball 30 times a game so having RB who can step in to give a breather or to take over in case of injury is important. As for RT I'm sure Dallas will address this before the start of the season.

The TT excitement is over the top.... just as is all the negative feelings over one preseason game.
TT looked fast in a straight line. but, not very fast. He looked a bit stiff, and doesn't look to be elusive.
I want him to make the team, and turn into a valuable player.
But, he will never be on Julius' level.

First - I am excited because of his SPEED.
Second - Why can't I be excited about having both JJ and Thompson on the roster ?

Julius is such a good RB that having another talent on the team is not going to threaten him. IMO it is Always a good thing to find that you have yet another talented player on the team.

I agree. He does show some promise, but I think we're getting way ahead of ourselves on Thompson. Yes, he outran a bunch of third team guys to the corner... Let's see if he can run between the tackles, because he can't and won't outrun first teamers to the sideline every play.
Not to mention blitz pickups... Surely we haven't already forgotten ReShard Lee?

You know the good thing about all of this.....is the idea that our RB depth is so that although we may lose a decent RB, the ones that make the team will have earned it instead of being some players we just have to have to fill a roster spot.
RB depth...when was the last time we had good depth Smith/Walker Smith/Warren?

No one was talking about moving JJ out and putting Thompson in. If you have Emmitt and Marshall Faulk on one team, how can that hurt you? That means that when it's time to pick up a 1st or a 2nd, you have the personell to do it. If you need to trade for a great QB or whatever, a 2nd RB who is as good or almost as good as our starter could be a good weapon for a trade.
Not to mention if JJ goes down with an injury. Barber and A-Train look ordinary thus far, that doesn't mean it won't change. TT looks to have some special qualities (SPEED AND NOT JUST SPEED BUT LOTS OF IT). BP had a split backfield in the game when TT was knocking off 10 and 15 yard carries. Can you imagine what Defenses would do if the split backfield were JJ & TT?

They had a 1st round draft choice in the lineup on a big 3rd and short play during "scrub time". The announcers were making a point to point that out.

Yes, three years after being drafted. That is quite comical. I was lmao at how pathetic that Pace dude is. Still, being a former first rounder playing garbage time in a preseason game must tell you something...

1. There's no way we'll get a "viable RT candidate" during the preseason out of a UDFA who had a good outing against the Arizona Cardinals 3rd stringers. That dog just won't hunt.
2. Depth. If Julius goes down, we've got to have depth to follow him. Barber is there, but a football team is all about having a full depth chart, not just two guys you want. Also, TT will develop into a different style of runner than MBIII.
3. It's preseason and we just came off of a loss. TT ran really well, so we're excited. That doesn't mean anyone who's intelligent thinks he's the next Barry Sanders.

Thompson does not pick when his opportunities come he just needs to make the most of it when his number is called and that is what he did. For his sake I hope he is given a chance to work with the 2nd unit to see how he responds

Alot of people were complaining about him not being able to do anything up the middle.
I watched my recording and what I saw was 1st off, they only gave it to him twice up the middle where, as soon as he got the ball, he was swormed.
I just want like I say all of the time "Playmakers". I don't care what school they came from or what they look like, or if they have a strong arm or not, I just want people who can make plays.

Thompson is FAST. That's the main reason he has people talking. If he continues to shine he could change the way BP is presently thinking about the backup RB. We're a long way from that happening but teams that would otherwise bring the house on Drew Bledsoe 3rd and long may be given pause if you have a guy that can take it the distance on a swing pass out of the backfield. Believe me the coaching staff is going to keep a close eye on Thompson and with good reason.

Not at this point. At this point, I would expect that if any of the halfbacks is cut, it will be A-Train, not Tyson. Tyson is a rookie with the potential to make big plays, Thomas is a power runner who's not going to do much more than that.
I'd consider ATrain the longshot.

He may look good for us at this point, and he brings a dimension that would eventually make him an extremely valuable 3rd down back if he can handle it.
ON the other hand, he's an undrafted RB...you're not going to find a RT in a trade for him...his value on the market is probably lower than Lynn Scott's.

The line wasnt blocking very well. Look at Julius numbers, Everytime he went outside he had some nice gains because of that speed. I hope he can catch the ball too but he has to be able to block if he is gonna play RB this year. Bottomline.

He was torching their entire team even tho they had an angle and knew what play we were running.

If you want to keep your LB's wide, then we'll gut-ya.
I'll tell you this though, if TT comes in and they stack the middle it is sure suicide for the defense. Imagine how good Key Johnson blocks on the outside, those 15 yard plays would turn into 23 yard plays and maybe touchdowns.

We don't play the Ravens this season so I don't think you will see him aginst Ray Lewis. LOL Thompson did a good job that is all I'm not claiming him the second coming of Jim Brown. At this stage Thompson has helped himself out with a good game and because of that he gives himself a better shot at making the roster and if he continues he will give himself a chance for meaningful playing time.

NO WAY!
He's an outside threat and looks like he'd be a great 3rd down back ...
If you saw him play and you're saying this, I'd wonder if you were on crack ...
This guy could be something very special. He's the 2nd best back on the team IMO. Even though it seems his strength is running to the outside ... inside running can be coached a litte ...
And if the Cowboys run an open set in the backfield like they did last game, they can use Julius and Thompson in the backfield very effectively IMO.
He'll make the team .... and he'll contribute a lot to the offense this year IMO.

I think it was just that the Cardinals sent all they had to clog up all of the holes that opened. It really worked. Maybe it's disrespect to our quarterbacks. Could be poor o-line play. Maybe it's total lack of speed by our receivers. Could be all three. I dunno.

sadly, i thin A-train was a wasted signing if TT continues his tear. I thought Barber was a huge steal but looks like Barber may be relegated to KRs. I don't know how we'll be able to handle (and the OL getting used to) JJ and TT tearing through the line at 100 mph and then A-train coming in and looking like Eddie boy George.
I know we won't have JJ carry every running play but its going to be hard to give the remaining few carries to a guy that's slow, esp when you have two young speedsters (TT and MB) sitting there waiting.

Need I mention the name Terrell Davis? Wasn't he a 6th rounder or something? Until he had that injury, I was positive that he would surpass Emmitt and Sanders in rushing yards. And he sure knew how to kill Dallas when he played.
