Cowboys quarterback and scratch golfer Tony Romo shot an even-par 72 at Bridlewood Golf Club on Tuesday to qualify for next month’s Texas State Open.

Romo, who came up short in attempts to qualify for the EDS Byron Nelson Championship and the U.S. Open last month, birdied No. 18 to clinch his spot in the prestigious tournament, which will be held July 13-16 in at White Bluff Resort in Whitney.

Romo grabbed one of five qualifying spots in a field of more than 50 golfers.

“I went out there because I wanted to challenge myself,” Romo said. “Even though I don’t do this for a living, I still wanted to achieve this goal.”

Romo was 3 over after just two holes, but five birdies helped offset his rough start. He said that bulking up during offseason workouts hurt his golf game, but on a day when rain made the course play longer, the extra muscle paid off.

Now, Romo could face a tough decision. The closing round of the TSO falls on the same day as an annual tournament back in his hometown of Burlington, Wis.

“I guess I’d have to head on home,” said Romo, who will be on vacation from his day job until training camp begins in Oxnard, Calif., on July 30.
