doesn't it make anybody mad to see Michael Irvin's no. 88 get handed out to the next guy in line. I know the cowboys don't retire numbers but since Jeff Robinson is barely even a tight end i think we should move him to a number in the 40s to open another number and "unoficially retire" no. 88.

Pearson wore 88 as well and we did not retire it for him, all I ask is who ever wears 88 do the number proud by performing on the field

I was happy to see Irvin do well with #88, but I assure you it had a rich tradition before Irvin ever seriously touched a football...

I was more than hacked when the Q got Meredith's #17...

12 and 22 are pretty much the untouchables IMHO...

Many of us longtime Cowboy fans have seen several number worn by the early greats that are being worn by todays players it is no big deal. As I said 88 was worn by Drew Pearson as well but we did not retire it for him.

It's probably better to put it on a scrub than on someone like Bryant, where them wearing that number carries with it a lot of expectations.

If they ever hand out 22 again, they should give it to a cornerback or someone like that where there are no expectations of "filling Emmitt's shoes".

There are only 99 numbers and at the beginning of camp some 80 plus players. The Cowboys have been around for some 30 years...by now there would be not enough numbers to dress the players.

When these numbers come back, it brings back the memories of the past players...i think that is a good thing. Now if someone wears 22... :eek:

Aikman and Emmitt will probably never have there number worn again. Aikman, Emmitt, and Irvin are the trippletts, if 8 and 22 isn't worn then what about 88

heck, when Chris Canty had 74 when he first got here.

As I've said before, only two numbers are sacred in Cowboys history and will never be worn again by another Cowboy, as Tex made Jerry promise to him when he bought the team that the #s 12 and 74 be "unofficially" retired. Jerry obliged, even though as others have noticed, 74 has been worn by more than a few people during preseasons past.

If you retire numbers for every Cowboy great, there'd be none left. There were so many Cowboys greats equal to or better than Irvin whose numbers are plastered on someone's back right now.

If we're going to retire numbers, it should be reserved only for the greatest of greats. #12 and #22 sound like a good start.

That's why they opened up 1-19 as jersey numbers for recievers a few years ago.

I know this doesn't have anything to do with the 'Boys, but anyone remember when the Boz made a big stink about the NFL's jersey numbering system back in 87 when he went to Seattle?? He wanted to wear his beloved 44 but the NFL said no, that's not a number for linebackers, so he tried to get the Seahawks to list him as a safety... no dice. He took the field in #55 and promptly got RUN OVER by Bo Jackson.

It doesn't matter to me at all. A number is a number. Get a good player wearing it and I will root for any new 88, 8, 22, 9, 7 or 11.

I just don't understand why you brought Robinson and his #85 into it. It doesn't effect him at all. Just take 88 away from Pierce and give him a 40 number.
