By MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com
IRVING - After trading away their first-round pick, the Cowboys took Notre Dame running back Julius Jones with the No. 43 overall pick and USC offensive tackle Jacob Rogers with the No. 52 overall pick in the NFL draft.
Earlier in the afternoon, with running backs Steven Jackson and Kevin Jones available, the Cowboys opted to trade their No. 22 pick to Buffalo in exchange for the 11th pick in the second round, the 12th pick in the fifth round and the Bills' first-round pick in the 2005 NFL draft.
Jones (5-10, 217) had 229 carries for 1,341 yards and 10 touchdowns his senior season. He had three 200-yard games his senior season and holds the Notre Dame record for kickoff-return yardage (2,104 yards).
Jones said Bill Parcells told him two weeks ago that the Cowboys would try to take him in the second round if he was still available. Parcells phoned Jones on Saturday afternoon and asked, "What did I tell you?" After Jones answered, Parcells said, "Alright, you're a Cowboy."
Jones was academically ineligible his junior season at Notre Dame, but bounced back last season.
"I had to take a year to grow up a little bit," Jones said.
Jones is not a punishing runner, but he does have explosive speed. By running a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, Jones moved up the draft board.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones had talked about his desire to trade down with the first pick, but with Jones and Jackson still on the board, the trade came as somewhat of a surprise. Parcells recently told team scouts that he planned on being around for quite awhile and today's move backs that up.
The Cowboys were apparently concerned about a right knee injury that Jackson sustained in the Las Vegas Bowl last season. Jackson tore his right meniscus, but he was still able to run a 4.55 in the 40-yard dash during recent workouts.
The Cowboys have now increased their number of picks from five to six in this weekend's draft. And with Buffalo coming off a 6-10 record and losing their top cornerback in free agency, the Cowboys could end up with a high pick in next year's draft.
I did know S. Jackson tore his meniscus in the bowl game last year

There were a lot of comments on Jackson's knee , that it was a bit banged up. But I didn't think it was too serious.
But as the article states, BP wanted J. Jones all along.
The good news is that BP is coaching for a bit longer than many anticipated!

I would have been thrilled with Jackson or Kevin Jones at 22. The first from Buffalo is very intriguing. Solid players in the second round. I am going to take a wait and see approach though.

Maybe JJ/BP were more concerned about Jackson's knee than several other teams?
I don't know what really motivated the draft down. One can guess that possibly on the Cowboys' board J Jones was rated high enough, and with Jackon's knee, and with the Bills' number 1 next year, it was enough to sway BP.
I'm sure this question will be answered over the next few days by JJ.

Great article.
This draft + Parcells potentially sticking around = dynasty in the making.
Wish some people around here would learn some patience....but thats the internet for you, I guess... :D
Apparently a lot of fans on this board are under two illusions:
a) the Cowboys are a Steven Jackson/Kevin Jones away from winning the Super Bowl.
b) they, as fans who troll mock draft sites and internet chat boards, are better evaluators of talent and have more football knowledge than Jerry Jones, Bill Parcells, Sean Payton, Stephen Jones, etc.
To the reasonable fan, both are pretty laughable assumptions.
Bill Parcells has been around this game all his life, is a legend in the business and has two Super Bowl rings....not to mention taking a team to the playoffs last year that had no business even winning 6 or 7 games.
I tend to think he's earned the benefit of the doubt.
BTW...if you're still pissed about the Julius Jones pick, let's remember for a moment a lower-rated RB that Parcells found in the third round. A guy named Curtis Martin.

They said Al Johnson's knee injury was nothing more than week to week either. They didn't know the damage until they had it scoped. Imagine if the Cowboys would have drafted Jackson, and he ended up needing the same surgery that Al Johnson had.

Hearing that made me feel like we just snagged another 2nd round pick. Good to know that the Tuna is really committed to the future of this franchise.

Even before he fell to 22 and we moved out in trade the talk was the knee might be degenerative. It is fine now but could be a big issue in 3 years. Since you guarantee a first rounder a bonus and sign him to more than 3 years at solid pay you want a guy to last at least 5 years.
Jackson is a big guy who will put a lot of pressure on that knee with his height.

:p 2 #1 piks next year------when Hensen, J.Jones, Witten et all have a solid year of learning curve under their belts--------

It's sort of a no brainer that he wanted Jones all along...no way we got value for that 22 pick if we really had Jackson as our man...I wish we'd gotten more for what we gave up in slots, but you only get what the other teams are willing to give, and clearly no one was offerring to much to move up for Jackson...we're lucky Buffalo wanted to get ahead of GB for the QB.

Ahh geez..trust in Bill...sure, I've got no problem with that. I've heard it a thousand times.
But how about something other than, "Bill knows more than you"?
As in, why were these players worth taking over:
Stephen Jackson
Kevin Jones
Matt Ware
Justin Smiley
Will Poole
I don't agree with some of these choices...especially in passing Matt Ware in the 3rd...that was a steal. Sheesh.
And Will Poole is still out there.

Call me naive, but I'm thinking the Cowboys employ an entire scouting staff and a whole bunch of people who've spent most of their adult lives in football. How many films/games have you watched? What are your qualifications?

Matt Ware can't play cornerback in the Cowboys system. You can't leave him alone in man to man coverage. It would be Mario Edwards revisited. Matt Ware is strictly a Cover 2 zone cornerback. The only way Ware would have ever seen the field as a Cowboy would be as a free safety.

Sure you can disagree. I was damn excited when our turn came and SJ was there...swore under my breath when they first announced the trade. Swore louder when I heard we traded out of the round altogher. Then I breathed a little and actually thought it through afterwards.
The bottom line is....nobody knows who will pan out, and who won't ever play a down. That even goes for 1st round picks. This whole thing is a crapshoot. All along, SJ and KJ were regarded as the "best" backs in this draft. But NEVER at any point were they anything close to a Ricky Williams, Duce McAllister, Clinton Portis, etc. Bell, Julius Jones, Chris Perry, etc were not far behind on the board, and were probably dead even all along as far as Parcells and Jones were concerned. That's why they were patient, didn't jump the gun, and listened to offers before they picked.
Sure enough, Buffalo played " " today...as teams often do on draft day. Teams with poor management, unlike the Cowboys. They panicked they wouldnt get Losman after missing out on Rivers and Roethlisberger. Now we have two picks in the 1st next year, and got ourselves some serious value. Oh yeah, and we still got a darn good RB as far as this weak class is concerned, and we beefed up our O-line (a serious need). If anyone bothered to listen to what JJ was saying these last few weeks, it's obvious they were going for VALUE all the way.
As for Will Poole.....no offense, but are you serious??? The fact that he's still out there should really raise a red flag. Something's up with that kid, and all the teams know it. 31 others passed on him more than once, not just the Cowboys.

parcells did mention in his press conference tonight that hunter, powell and davidson were all doing a great job in the offseason program and that they are "growing up." he also mentioned how last year they were just trying to go with the flow.
it looks like more and more they are gonna let these 3 fight it out for the starting CB spot opposite of newman unless something happens after june 1.

I'm not sure what the situation is with Poole but in regards to Ware he also is in the farm system for the Mariner's so spends the majority of the offseason in minor league ball.
Personally I'm hoping that my M's call him up and force him to give up football.

The thing that excites me the most about the trade with Buffalo is that the 1st we gained could quite possibly turn into a top 5 pick next year, when you look at Buffalo's situation....
1. Rookie Head Coach.
2. Bledsoe skills are eroding.
3. They lost their top CB, who was imo their best defensive player.
4. Their in a really tough division.
I could see them going 4-12 or 5-11 easily.

It's going to be at least a year before we get a good read on this trade with Buffalo. That could turn out to be a very good pick.
I liked Julius Jones coming in. I posted a question about three weeks ago ... which RB in this draft is the closest to Domanick Davis and Artose Pinner, two backs we know Parcells liked last year.
Several guys (I know Michael Winicki was one of them) answered with: Julius Jones.
Great answer, guys. You called it.
I'm OK with the trade down and that pick.
But I'm not as high on these two offensive linemen, especially the guard.
I guess what bothers me is it looks like Dallas went into this draft picking strictly for need. That's dangerous business.
