View Full Version : Witten Horsecollared?

Did other people notice Witten get horsecollared on his 1st reception? I don't even remember the announcers saying anything about it. And then I also saw another play get taken down the same way without a penalty in the SF game. Isn't this suppose to be watched and called this year (personal foul 15 yards)? Or is this just reserved for Roy Williams?
Can someone please explain this to me? Did the officials miss something or did I miss something?

According to Aikman and Buck, it was not a penalty because the player grabbed the jersey first, not the shoulder pad.

They said it wasn't a horse collar because rather than grabbing Witten by the shoulder pads, the defender grabbed his jersey.
Hence, no horse collar penalty.

Oh and suppose you're better than me because you posted it first? :D

Absolutely it was a horsecollar tackle. I was screaming for a penalty then came to my senses. I don't know what came over me.

If that's the case then people need to quit pointing out all those injuries Roy "Caused" last year due to that tackle. On two of them he grabbed jersey, not shoulder pads.

I saw the same thing and was yelling at the freaking officials..... What the heck gives on this chicken crap rule..... It only applies to R Williams??????
That was a freakin horse collar if I've ever seen one!! You can bet that it will be called on RW EVERY time......
You can look in the image zone at game photo's and see it clearly. I'm going back there now to see it again and get mad.........
The way Witten fell to the ground, that could have easily been an injury similar to the ones Roy has imposed.
That's why I think the penalty is such a joke. The rule is so loosely written, it's not really going to help with injuries on that particular tackle IMO.
And to horse tackle, it only counts if the runner drops to the ground immediately after the player grabs to the inside collar. Few players are strong enough to make that actually happen.

The most ridiculous rule ever adopted by the NFL

I was screaming my off, but I'm mainly glad Witten didn't get hurt.

Stupid rule with too much interpretation. It's supposed to be a rough game. That's part of the reason why people love it.

That's a stupid distinction by the Rules Committee. It's not like the physics behind the injuries change based on what part of the uniform the defender is holding on to. Grabbing a player from behind and leaving your feet to make the tackle is pretty much all it takes.

That rule only comes into effect 16 games this season (and possibly the playoffs).

Prediction about this rule. It will only draw a flag if someone gets hurt. That alone makes it a joke. If a player tackles someone exactly as Witten was today and he the player is injured so that a flag is thrown it will show this rule to be even more of a joke than we already know it is.

I don't see how the rules committee can make this kind of distinction. Both instances create the same potential for an injury -- which is no more or less than most other types of tackles imo.
The Cowboys FO might want to point that out to someone.

It is only a penality if the official throws a flag. It is like speeding. You are really only speeding if you get a ticket. If you don't get caught, you get away with it.

Doesn't the defender have to use his body weight to bring the player down in order for it to be a penalty? I thought I read that when the rule change was being discussed.

It looked like a textbook RW tackle to me... coming from the side, right hand to collar.. pull and then punch with the left hand at the ball.. it's is exactly what Roy does. Witten ran through it a little, but to me, that's the same tackle that the rule was created for.

I saw it and was also surprised no one said a word. He was plain and simply horsecollered!

That, and first time Roy ever makes anything that remotely resembles a horse-collar tackle.
"Personal foul, #31. Thought about using horse-collar tackle. 15 yards, automatic . . . first down!"

They said it wasn't a horse collar because rather than grabbing Witten by the shoulder pads, the defender grabbed his jersey.
Hence, no horse collar penalty.
But given the speed of the game, how could a bunch of senile refs that are over 50 years old know the difference? Could they clearly see where the tackler's hands were?
My point is that the league office never reviewed where Roy Williams' hands were when he tackled that way...they only looked at the way the opposing player went down.
Either call the penalty fairly or scrap the gawd aweful thing!

I am positive that Parcells will send a videotape of that tackle and non-call to the league office with a letter that simply says "F You".
