What is the probability that the 'Boys will use a trick play against the 'Skins on Monday night?

- half back option
- fake punt / field goal
- etc.

My guess = 0.8

0% I think we will save those for the good teams/close games

I'm waiting on seeing a pass by Crayton, either off a backwards pass or reverse

I really never thought about that...sounds intriguing

I agree. In fact, I always consider the use of trick plays to be a good indicator that a team considers itself to be out-matched, talent for talent. That's why I took heart in seeing SD starting to trot out reverses and the like in the third quarter of sunday's game. Told me that Schot didn't think his guys on offense could beat our guys on defense straight-up.

Dooms is right on the money, BP always does some gadget plays himself during the season. The only question as to doing it against the skins would be two things; first, how much does Payton believe in those types of plays and if they sync up with his normal play calling so he can set the defense up to be vulnerable to them. Second, we are the favored team and should not need to "pull out all the stops" against the skins. So we may see a more conservative game plan to avoid any big field position losses or increasing the risk of turnovers. Remember, most gadget plays take some time to execute and we all expect the skins to blitz like maniacs on Monday.

As for the skins use of a trick play, did Portis(or Betts) ever throw the option pass? I think I recall that one of them did before but I'm not sure. Anyone know for sure?

I have been waiting for it as well, but remember the results the last time Parcells tried one of these plays. He was fairly good at pulling off trick plays w/ the Jets.

I wouldn't mind seeing a flea flicker...Julius tosses it back to Bledsoe...Drew hits Terry Glenn for a 50 yard touchdown.

You can bet your arse there will be a trick play by either us or them. Always is. Gibbs loves the flea-flicker. And we probably still have the halfback/pass play in the books. We will see one of these no doubt.

They should try the screen pass. Would be a miracle if one would actually work this year.

I don't think so. I agree with Outlaw. I dont think we'll use one unless Parcells feels a sense of desperation. The Skins defense is stout but I gotta think Parcells likes his chances with this offensive personnel.
If anything I think we may use one against the Eagles in Week 5.

I think the Skins will definitely use some sort of gadget play with Santana Moss...

I don't know I would not be suprised to see Dallas run some type of trick play to help slow down the blitzing the skins will be doing.

I've been involved in football for twenty something years and haven't gotten a reasonable explanation for why it's called a flea-flicker.

I know what a flea is and webster defines flicker as = move or shine unsteadily. How do the two go together.... thoughts :D

I wouldn't want to see us get too exotic with the trick play but a simple Flea Flicker like every team has in their playbook would be great. I would especially like it on a drive right after the Skins had scored (if they do). I fast strike for a TD would take the wind right out of their sails. And there is nothing I like seeing better than Washington getting deflated.

I agree and I disagree. Fake punts or FG's, onsides kick's early, half back options all could have the whiff of a team that thinks it needs a lift to get by a superior opponent. But does that mean that ALL unusual plays mean that? I think not. If a team is showing they're selling out on the run or prone to over pursuing the sweep why not run a flea flicker or a reverse against that team? Teams run what they think will work, gadget or not. There's a difference between desperate and inventive. NE runs reverses and flea flickers. Who are they overmatched against?

Just a thought: the name may be a reference to path of the ball. Stilted movement: first forward, now back, now forward again. Not unlike the stilted movements of a flea jumping hither and dither. Again, nothing more than a guess.

Good point. And to clarify, I don't think the use of trick plays is proof positive that you think you're overmatched; just a "good indicator".

That's what I'm expecting. On a WR run or on a reverse, he can heave it downfield to Peerless Price.

I think the chances of the Redskins using a trick play is pretty high, above 50%. Dallas' chances are more like 5%.

Portis threw 1 TD pass last year. I remember it because I had that stiff Laveranues Coles on my fantasy team last year and that was his only receiving TD all year. Of course, i happened to be playing the owner of Portis that week :bang2:

I imagine as Julius becomes more and more proficient in the passing game, we'll see it run successfully. But if BP can get A-train and Barber more involved in the offense, I think we'll definitely see it work more than in years past...

Crayton threw an interception last year, but I believe he lined up behind the center with Vinnie wide. They ran the option (near the goal line), and Crayton threw it into traffic.

Edit: Nope, it was a reverse (took handoff from JJ) in the last Giants game according to nfl.com play-by-play. The play was a 1st and 10 from the NYG 22 and the pass was intended for Witten.

I'd have no problem trying it again. I once got into a car accident but did not stop driving because of it. LOL

The boyz have been beating us with trick plays for YEARS. And Tuna has always seemed to use them against Gibbs, too, going back to Joe Morris throwing haflback option passes at RFK. I'd be schocked if you guys didnt' run at least one.

Not sure you want to go flea-flicker, though. Too slow-developing. My money would be on something like the quick backward pass-option noted above to try to beat the blitz.

Sneaky bastiges.

I have top secret, insider information that Gibbs might try the (looks around to make sure we're alone) Shotgun snap this year.

We must be on constant look-out for this trick play from the old master.
