It feels like we do not have a pro level safety opposite Roy and it could kill our season. What do we do? Stick with Keith Davis and hope he gets better? Sign Phillipi Sparks? Bring Woodson out of retirement (Darren or Rod)?

Is there a trade out there that would make sense? Arizona is 0-3 and may have just lost their QB for a while. Buffalo is 1-2 and looking bad. Chicago is 1-2 and realistically has no shot, despite being 2nd in their division. If these teams lose another game or two before the trade deadline in mid-October, is there an opportunity to make a deal?

Chicago has Mike Brown, Chris Harris, Todd Johnson, and Mike Green.

Buffalo has Lawyer Milloy and Troy Vincent.

Arizona has Adrian Wilson and Robert Griffith.

Did Davis play again on Defense after that botched play ?

Didnt Pile play the rest of the game

I remember seeing a whole lot of Pile in the 2nd half. I just keep saying it is Derek Ross because of that number 20 popping on the screen.

shoulda signed Sharper.

(yea yea, I know... he's hurt right now but still)

I couldn't believe with all the money we had that we didn't get Sharper.

...do something about this predicament. The best we can hope for is some development out of our current personnel or maks that postion with the play of other members of the team.

Grasping for straws at this point in time is not a good plan.

Pile will see more time....how about moving Glenn back there in big spots?

why not move henry to FS, he proved today he is not a shut down corner.

I was really hoping that Hunter would subjugate his ego and play FS. Does the guy even have a job anymore?

Despite looking like an All-Pro in week one and two.

I know.....after first two weeks people were ready to put his name next to Deion and this week he worse than what we had for past 5 yrs. Every CB has a bad day. It's the nature of the job. Ask Champ.
He needs to come back strong next week and make more plays than he gives up. We'll need him for rest of the season.

...just the saddest thing. The team was giving this guy a legitimate shot at winning a position of need for us with no real stand out candidate in front of him.

He buggers off to another team and gets cut. When he was leaving I thought he was following some bad advice from his agent or his emotions. It's sad what low depths he has fallen to.

The Bears do seem to have a little bit of a surplus at safety right now. I think that Davis and Pile are going to continue their audition. We may even see more of Jones and Reeves. I think this is the one position that will be most looked at - other than kicker.

I didn't see Pile get beat deep while he was in the game.

Davis came back in to play on running downs.

I think Pile will be our answer at FS, this year.

Well..

Davis is probably just too stretched b/w playing safety AND playing special teams. BP predicted that this would be a dilema for us.

He's right.

And by the way, ALL the secondary had big problems matched up against speed WR's. And the two weeks before that. Last week it was Roy Williams and Aaron Glenn we were screaming about.

Now this week, it's Henry and Davis.

So it's as pretty much going all over the field that's hurting us and we are getting matchups that are concentrating on some weaknesses in the schemes and the physical matchups.

To me, we have the best secondary in the last 15 years here.

But the DL is still not really playing up to expectations.

And BP predicted that. There are still too many new faces in key positions that are learning to play together in the 3-4. This is still being worked on.

Pile should get his chance at FS, too. But you have to think a guy we just traded for only 3 weks ago still hasn't gotten all the defenses down and will get burned, too, if he's asked to step in at this point.

Why don't the Cowboys shallow a little Humble Pie and bring in Hunter on a 1 year deal and get him playing at FS..? I'm really unclear about that. If we can cut and then resign guys like Stewart and others, what's the problem in looking again at Hunter..?

He knows the schemes, he's physically capable if healthy and heaven knows BP has taken in plenty of guys with attitude problems and made their careers work.

This needs to be re-thought. Letting Hunter go and trying Davis and now Pile smacks of a bad decision we need to undo if possible.

I'm guessing they will try to survive until the break with what they have and then try to sign somebody and take the extra week to get them ready for the rest of the season.

Hunter would be the quickest answer to getting a new guy ready.

We'll see.

The Deep passes scare me some. But its called growing pains. We have some new people back there. The biggest thing we can do right now to help the secondary, is to put more pressure on the QB with the DL. Ware needs to be more of a factor off the corner. You give the opposing QB 4-5 seconds and he willfind an open guy. I think with the speed we have on the DL we should be running more stunts and not trying to bull rush everyone. Don't look for a trade anytime soon. I think Pile will play more on passing downs. Davis will grow into this position and be pretty good. He has a lot of talent. Just relax. We will be ok.

We put this season in jeapordy by not addressing Safety.

Same mistake made at RCB/FS last season. Lets hope we can overcome it. Two seasons in a row we left $5M on the table unspent with needs. Kool aid drinkers no need to reply.

What are you guys saying - We have a "Pile" for a safety.

I think Will might be the answer at FS. I didnt see him get beat yesterday when he took over for Davis.

Davis is a hitter. He is not a Ballhawk which we need. We have/had too many hitters at safety. Davis wants to stick his nose in the LOS instead of doing his job. Until he learns to do his job he will either be on the bench or keep getting beat.

We talked about Dwight Smith (now in NO) should've signed him but we opted for Izell Reese. Sharper wanted too much money, so can't blame them there. At this point maybe take another look at Reese and hope that someone decides to make a deal with you later. If we're serious about contending this year then something will need to be done.

It's not the DL. The DL played a heck of a game yesterday and has doing so consistently. The linebackers, except for Dat, aren't filling the holes. That's sort of to be expected in a newly implemented 3-4.

Hunter is not a safety. He has the size and speed but he's not a physical player and not a very good tackler.

Good point. Dat's playing better than expected in this scheme, Wares a rookie and Singleton and James are simply not getting it done on a consistent basis. This is why I think Parcells has opted to rotate them. He's still evaluating who's more effective in this new D. We will see less of a rotation at LB once he's had enough time to make his assessment.

I understand your distinction with the Lbers and the 3-4.

I'll change my statement from the DL to just not sacking the QB and giving him too much time...whether it's a particular position or the scheme then.

It happened in the Chargers game at the end, it happened in the 'Skins game in the end and it happened throughout the 9ers game.

We aren't getting to the QB enough to stop the passing attacks. With Oakland coming up and Randy Moss..

..I'm not even going to give our secondary a chance at stopping the Oakland passing attack.

What are we going to do other than all-out blitz the QB in an attempt to stop Moss from killing us..?

With the problems with coverage and not enough pressure from the front 7 to force mistakes from the opposing offense..

..it's reality check time this Sunday.

If the Chargers without Gates almost beat us..if the Redskins with Santana Moss collapsed us..and if the 2-14 9ers took us to the wall and it took 34 pts to win..

what happens this week..?

BP and Zimmer are going to need to make some huge adjustments and get a fire lit under the defense to pull this game out.

The defense is going to have to hope to hold the Raiders to 21-24 points and pray the offense continues with the magic they have shown so far this year.

if not..

Knowing BP it won't be Hunter, he didn't take his ex-wife back and he won't take Hunter either, but I bet we get another FS from somewhere, be it waiver wire or wherever..

Amen Nors - that is 3 times in the last 2 games we've been killed on almost the same play. You know that Norv and Moss are licking their chops this week if we don't do something about it. It's a known fact that Roy is over his head when in deep coverage - and Keith Davis or Gomer Pile aren't the kind of help.

This problem is not going away and Defensive Coordinators will continue to exploit it as the season goes along.
