View Full Version : Passing against our cornerbacks (three games)

By my count, here's how teams have fared when passing against our three cornerbacks so far. (Passes batted at the line of scrimmage are not included)

Against Newman -- 9-for-18, 110 yards, two interceptions, no touchdowns (29.6 passer rating)

Against Henry -- 12-for-25, 230 yards, one interception, two touchdowns (90.4 passer rating)

Against Glenn -- 4-for-9, 157 yards, one interception, two touchdowns (91.1 passer rating)

All three combined -- 25-for-52, 497 yards, four interceptions, four touchdowns (75.5 passer rating)

A few things to note --

-- On fourth downs, our opponents are 3-for-4 for 92 yards, one interception and one touchdown (116.6 passer rating). They're 1-for-1 for 20 yards against Newman, 1-for-1 for 33 yards against Henry and 1-for-2 for 39 yards, one interception and one touchdown against Glenn.

-- All three cornerbacks have allowed a 50 percent completion rate or less. Considering that we've been playing quite a bit of zone, that seems pretty good.

-- Newman has allowed 12.2 yards per catch, which is decent. But Henry has allowed 19.2 ypc and Glenn has allowed 39.3. Obviously, the deep ball is killing us. We've played good pass defense other than four or five plays.

-- The two interceptions thrown against Newman include the one he tipped away and Nguyen caught.

-- Newman allowed one catch to a running back (Portis for 6 yards). All of the other catches against our cornerbacks have been by wide receivers.

On a side note, through three games, Roy hasn't allowed a catch to any receiver (including tight ends and running backs) when he had primary responsibility (other than a 13-yarder that was wiped out by an offensive penalty in the San Diego game). Davis has allowed four catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns in primary responsibility.

Very informative, TNew is really having a good year. I wonder how many of those long passes involved Keith Davis.

It would also be quite interesting to see what the nickle pkg. defensive stats show as well...

Thanks for the information, but why would this be counted as an interception in the passer rating if he did not intercept it? Wouldn't it just be an incompletion?

He created the interception by knocking the ball away. (I didn't count the interception when the 49ers tried to throw to his guy but the ball was batted and intercepted, because Newman had nothing to do with it.) If you count Nguyen's interception as an incompletion, the passer rating against Newman is 46.0.

If we use Adjusted Passing Average instead of passer rating, it's 0.556 against Newman (3.333 without the second interception), 7.200 against Henry and 11.889 against Glenn.

Newman caused the interception.

Newman caused the interception.

He tipped the ball. It could have very well been an incompletion had Nguyen not been in position. To me, that would be a pass defensed, not an interception unless he did it himself.

That second interception really should be a pass deflection. Dat completed the play not Newman. If Dats not there then that is what it is.

He is still top notch without it.

Davis is absolutely horrid. I think im going to start the Get Rid Of Davis Movement.

GROD makes sense; he is costing us games.

It needs to be GRODAS (Get Rid of Davis at Safety) movement. Davis is incredibly good on special teams.

To be honest with you, those numbers are useless. They don't mean a damn thing when our secondary is getting molested by the likes of Brandon Lloyd.

Lets see how he does the rest of the year and the numbers actually reflect quite a bit.

Newman and Roy are playing stellar and the rest from bad to horrid. Dont tell rAck tho hell start blaming the pass rush for Davis sucking.

Do you like intelligent design as well?

Apparently, you didn't even bother to look at the numbers. They explain how badly we've been getting beaten, who has been getting beaten and how often they've been beaten.

I've been waiting for that... ;) I want Pile to start just so when he turns the wrong way on a play, Parcells can sit him down...

Thanks Adam...items of info like these are the reasons why I frequent this board instead of watch ESPN 24/7.

You guys should really feel lucky to have a member like Adam...I'm on the Bucs' boards also and there's not a member that posts items like he does.

The good news is that the problem of "four or five long passes agains us" is correctable; the bad news is that correction will require some combination of 1) new players, 2) more experience by current secondary, or 3) less safety help stuffing the run. Only number 3 can help immediately.

I disagree.

If by new players, you mean a new true FS, then by all means I would agree.

I'm not sure about the experience thing... statistically the best corner is the least experienced in the NFL. Glenn is more than seasoned and has given up the worst passer rating. However, Davis does need a lot more experience.

Less safety help has little to do with Davis being out of position. Roy should be around the line on passing and running downs as much as the rest of the secondary will allow. He can save some of those killer deep balls by getting in the QBs face.

More Pile and less Davis... I bet that OPPG drops a good amount (maybe not this week due to Moss and the Raiders high octane offense).

Adam, you mentioned the CB's and Roy, but what about the free safety? I can't imagine it looks good at all.

Davis' numbers are in there, too (four catches, 66 yards, two touchdowns). And that doesn't include the touchdown against San Diego when Parcells said the linebackers messed up (Ware didn't get a jam and/or James didn't drop far enough in coverage).

Its funny I was calling for Lance Schulters the entire time... but people didn't want us going for him.

"Give Keith Davis a chance"

The free safety position has the chance to hold our defense hostage all year. We're probably going to have to start dropping linebackers back into coverage, which is going to hurt our struggling pass rush even more.

This shows exactly what most people here already should have known, the begging of the season was going to be rough, we play so many good offense teams in the first half of the season, you could expect the the D to be number 1 overall.

And i dont understand all the hatred on San fran, they play reall good at home, and LLoyd is a good WR, no he's not randy moss but he can catch and run, and is a real threat on the San Fran offense.

But like i said you can expect these numbers for the next few games, our Off will have to win us these games,
