Report: Deion Owes Back Child Support

DALLAS - Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders  reportedly owes back child support and faces legal action for mismanaging a trust fund.

The ex-player and sports commentator disputes the claims in a petition of breach of trust and a motion for enforcement of a child support order filed July 8 in Collin County district court on behalf of his ex-wife, Carolyn Chambers Sanders of Flower Mound.

Attorney Deborah Pritchett, who filed the court papers, said she has been unable to summon Sanders to court or determine which of his attorneys represents him in family matters. The first hearings are scheduled for Monday.

Sanders' former wife alleges that the athlete, who lives in Prosper, has not paid the court-ordered monthly payment of $1,500 for their two young children since February. She also wants to withdraw her $1 million contribution to a $2 million trust fund for the children, which was established after the parents divorced in 1998, and dissolve the trust.

The ex-player is the fund's trustee but is not fulfilling his legal obligation to provide annual financial accounting to Chambers Sanders, Pritchett said.

``There is no truth to anything she's alleging,'' Sanders told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday night, adding that he has copies of canceled checks for his child support payments through June. ``I established the trust fund for my kids, and I'm the custodian of the trust fund. And I will protect my kids' money from their mother.''

His ex-wife is also seeking to have the court-ordered child support increased. Her attorney said they would discuss at the hearing Monday whether more is needed to support the children, ages 14 and 10.

``If Mr. Sanders has paid and he can legitimately show the canceled checks, then that would expedite this matter,'' said Pritchett. ``She just wants to take care of her children. They need to be supported by their father, who was ordered by the court to do so.''

She said Chambers Sanders works for a Dallas real estate company.

Deion's gettin' off easy. $1500 a month for child support for 2 kids from a multi-millionaire athlete? Deion's x-wife should have shot her lawyer.

I have friends who make $30K a year and are paying $1500 in child support. Fark!!!

The Ticket reported this morning that Deion claims to have cancelled checks and has never missed a payment...

If he doesn't, then his credibility is doubly damaged... a liar and a dead-beat dad... let's hope this isn't true for the children's sake...

This would seem to indicate that he has also given at least 1 million dollars in addition to the $1500 per month. Who knows who is telling the truth here but I think that saying he's getting off cheap is a bit far fetched. A million dollars is a great deal of money no matter how you slice it.

I also points out that she is looking to dissolve the trust currently set up and get the money right now. Sounds to me like she wants the kid's cash.

What I get from this is that Deion set up the trust so that money paid would go directly to the kids, while the ex wants to have that money now rather than later when the kids get it directly.

If Deion does have the cancelled checks then this woman does not have a leg to stand on. Sounds like a pretty empty accusation to me. With Deion coming out and insisting that he's got proof, you'd have to think that this was the case.

Well, those cancelled checks are a considerably better defense than the one Deion gave last year....

when told him not to pay his mechanic. :D

The trust fund is for the kids ...when they are grown...I agree that $1500/month is cheap ! I pay more than that for 2 myself....And I don't think I'm anywhere near Sanders income...

Based on what I've heard/read, I think his ex-wife is a total flake.

He was exonerated after it was shown that the mechanic was trying to extort money from him and I believe he'll come out of this one OK, too.

He's a convenient target.

Just like Irvin was. Once he is exonerated, the media won't say one Iota about it.....however, they have been saying the same thing every half-hour on sports talk radio......that he's not paying child-support, etc.

If the media does say anything, then it will be, "Deion Sanders, the former 49er, wrongly accused by ex-wife".

He last played for the Skins. He won a SB with the 49ers too and he spent most of his career in Atlanta! Give me a break.

Interesting how much influence money has on people.

If I am not mistaken, didnt Deion file for divorce because he cheated on her with his lawyer? Will have to look into that.

Just like when Alvin Harper got in trouble for that stolen car ring he was a former Cowboy. He had been with Tampa, Washington, and the Saints since leaving Dallas.

Well, I certainly don't encorage that kind of behavior but once again, it seems like Prime Time had everything covered.

Wonder if she charged by the hour?

Did he really divorce her on the grounds of infidelity?

Pretty amusing, after he went on national tv and admitted to Wilt Chamberlain like numbers. Cripe, he had the self control of Bill Clinton. :D

I can't say for certain (because I don't have the facts) but I think it was her who filed for divorce.

Either way you slice it the guy has a tremendous amout of nerve.

And money, which is what really counts.

I never cared for him personally, but always loved to see him play.

I'm probably also one of the few NFL fans who liked him on CBS. He did a few interviews in which he established such immediate rapport with players he got more out of them then those five-six minute segments usually do. He had a knack for it, and knew how to follow up. I expected his interviewing to be all about him. It most definitely wasn't. His stchick with Esiason I found somewhat amusing as well.

Whatever he does, he is Primetime.

A true original. :p

Sadly what you said was a very true statement. However, it is easy to point the finger at someone without having all of the facts and still pass judgement. There are a lot of self righteous poor to middle class but that all changes when they hit it big. :D

On a side note, I also enjoyed watching him on CBS, hell that was the only reason I watch that sorry arse pre-game show in the first place. Now that he is gone I shutter to think how God awful it will be.

Is child support based on a person's income in the state of Texas? I have never thought about it before, but the few people I know who either pay or receive child support get around the same amount per child.
