View Full Version : 2006 NFL Free Agent List
Well, I asked for help to do this like 2 weeks ago, but nobody was interested. Being the good guy that I am, I'll share the fruits of my labors anyway.
Here is what I did. Went to NFL.com for current rosters. Went to nflpa.org's salary database. Any player with 4 years experience whose contract expired in 2005 was added to the list.
I currently don't have any way of knowing who might have a contract that voids after 2005 due to performance, playing time, etc (except Gurode, who is on there). I am sure there are a few and, in reality, those are some of the best free agents since they are initially coming out of their rookie deal.
Also, not sure on player options that the team can pick up. They probably are not displayed on the nflpa.org database.
Its not perfect, but you didn't pay for it or go through the tedious work I did to make it either, so if you don't like it, take a hike. I am sure there are a few mistakes. I'd appreciate feedback on anything that you might find to be incorrect.
I'll post the lists in the next two posts.....

thanks for the post.
i would LOVE to have archuleta on the team opposite RW. Someone fast who can cover deep, and they would both be laying hits all over the place.
vinateiri, rackers, fred beasley or corey chavous would be a good pickup too. thats about all i saw.

greaat work man, hopefully this year, we open up our wallets agian, and add to this wonderous team, w/e we need
Wew need to address FS and FB 3rd down back and maybe WR. Also another Big LB OR 2.
Also another mamoth DT type - maybe draft

I'm all about Jerry opening up the wallet again and signing a big name free safety such as Will demps and a decent full back like a henderson or neal. I think that will help julius develop and it will give us one of the better secondaries in the league.

Thats pretty much exactly what I think as well.
I'd also consider adding guard to that list. LA/Rivera both aging. I think LA has roster bonuses due. I am not sold on Peterman/Noll just yet.

I'm don't know much about the kid myself, I just remember seeing him play pretty well at times.
At this point .. any FS would be better. I'm not sure on the potential FS coming into the draft this season, but I'm sure the Cowboys know that they need to address this. If not ASAP then in the Off-season.

Archuleta is not a good cover safety as partly evidenced by his 3 career interceptions and 16 passes defended in 4 years and 5 games this season. His strength, like Roy's is when he plays near the line of scrimmage. He has 13 career sacks over that same time period. I think he was a linebacker in college.
Beriault probably can bring some of the same things to the table that Archuleta brings and will be cheaper. They are both strong safeties. I think a complimentary free safety, whose strength is in coverage will be a better fit for the the defense. I don't know who can fill that role.

I honestly cant see us being major player's in free agency this year. Jerry spent 32 millon this offseason. We need to concentrate on re-signing our young stars like witten. Jerry may grab 1 big name, but certainly not the spending spree we had this past offseason.

No problem and I know where you are coming from. I like having this during the season, so as the games go on, I can watch players who will be free agents and at positions that I feel are weak for Dallas.

Some really good Kickers in that list. (Vinatieri, Vanderjagt, Longwell, etc.)

Also, must... re-sign... Dan... Campbell.

chavous would be great. im sure hed be happy to jump ship after the atrocious way theyve been playing. very smart player, who would take a lot of burden off RW that is still there this season. FS is really the only spot id like to sign a FA, and maybe a fb.

Vinatieri will never see the FA market even if he did I don't see Jerry shelling out big money for a kicker.

I just think coverage is more of a skill and feel than just use of pure speed. You can make up ground with recognition skills and having a feel for the passing game. I don't think Archuleta has that. Neither does Roy. Both have great feel for the running game. They both recognize running lanes and can come up and stone guys. It is a different skill set.
If Dallas got him, I would be fine with it. It just appears, they may already have a young player very similar to Arculeta in Beriault.

ya beriault looked great, but after seeing so little of him, im not too sure id want to go into the season with him as priority at FS. he definitely showed he has the potential to start, just not if he can start at FS or play consistent enough. id prefer archuleta but like i said, i really havent seen enough of him to know if he's a good cover type safety or not yet, i just know hes an amazing athlete who can hit hard. hopefully he could fill the fs role, if not id like to at least get someone with a few years of experience to play there.

This is the guy I was looking at: Chris Hope
Solid mentally - good feel for the game. Does a solid job of reading routes and closing forward from center-field. He only has average size but very good strength for the position. He is a better hitter than tackler - hits with force and can play with a mean streak. Good overall AA - shows solid hips, quickness and COD. Shows good overall play speed and can cover ground from center-field to sideline. He takes solid angles in run support - will come across the field and make plays. Though he is a big hitter, he needs to be more consistent to wrap up and finish. He is a very regimented player - can look mechanical with his reads and reactions. He is a steady player, but he does not come up with enough big or explosive type plays from the FS position.
Hiero

sounds solid, i like the part about him being able to cover ground from center field to sideline. as long as he can cover good, and not give up big plays, we can leave the playmaking to RW Ware and the likes.

I liked OG Hutchinson but he'd be too pricey to sit and wait for LA or Rivera to retire.
I think we're going to have to use a day one pick to get an OG, and there should be plenty in the next draft. LA can't play forever and we know that Gurode isn't the answer. It should be interesting to see if we even re-sign Gurode. We're gonna need a young guy to develop behind our current guys. Not sure about Peterman either.
That list was pretty underwhelming. I honestly didn't see hardly any upgrades that we could get over what we have....maybe Kicker and FS Demps but slim pickings overall. Didn't see any LBs jump out at me. Julian Peterson, but still don't think he's the same player he was. I don't know how we could sign a FA WR to make any kind of contribution. It'd be too expensive to sign someone as a backup, wait, we're already doing that. More of a draft issue too because we're heavy there right now.
FS's aren't expensive on the FA market, you just have to find what you want. You do typically want someone with experience though. I think FS might be a good candidate to grab a FA.
LB might be also, but I'm not sure there will be any of interest available.
Next offseason I'm seeing:
FA: FS, K
Draft: OG, LB, WR
and hopefully 2007 draft:
QB Brady Quinn (if Henson still stinks)
and a 3-4 NT

Great post....Haha how awkward would that be if Antonio Bryant came crawling back to us. Hes a fantastic talent as we all saw his rookie yr. Also, i think the fullback situation depends on this yr as in how we do without using one everyday. Another safety is a huge concern. I like Archuleta and Dexter Jackson.

A friend found some errors. I am missing at least one Packer (Grey Ruegamer) and NFL.com lists Craig Nall as having 2 years experience when, in reality, he has 4 and is an unrestricted free agent after the season (if you click on Nall's name, it correctly lists him as having 4 years experience).
I double check the fudge and correct them tonight.

Not that it matter much but Vinterception signed a 2 year deal with the Jets.
Thanks for the work junk.
Ike Hilliard is in a contract year. That explains his season thus far a little better. Hmmm...
The Steelers are very pleased with Hope, I think his #1 choice would be Carolina but with Minter at that position, I think he may take a hard look at Atlanta. He lives in SC near the NC border just south of Charlotte.
Only a few players I can conceive playing for the Redskins.

According to nflpa.org and every article I read, Vinny is only signed through 2005 with the Jets.
If you have a link that shows otherwise, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

My thoughts on our Free Agents first.
Dallas Cowboys
Dan Campbell TE (Must re-sign him. Letting him go would be foolish.)
Jose Cortez K (He's a kicker. Could care less but don't see how.)
Scott Fujita OLB (I'd definitely like to ink him to a long term deal.)
Andre Gurode* G (Definitely want to keep him. Versatile and it would drive Nors nuts.) :D
Eric Ogbogu DE/OLB (He's gone more likely than not.)
Peerless Price WR (Has 11 games left to prove he's worth keeping. Probably gone.)
Anthony Thomas RB (Barber and Thompson have proven their worth. He hasn't.)
Now, the Free agents who catch my eye immediately. Lots of them won't be available I'm sure, but there is some good talent here. The list starts right where I'd like to go first. Will Demps at FS would be a nice addition. Some are roster fillers. Some are dreaming big. Some would contribute nicely.
