First of all, I'm not mad or dissapointed at us trading down or drafting Jones. The draft is really a crapshoot and especially after the first 15 picks IMO. We got a solid RB and two solid OL. These three rookies COULD start the first game and do a good job in their rookie seasons....of course this probably won't happen, but they are TALENTED ENOUGH to do it. Jones is definitely an upgrade over Hambrick and Jacobs and Peterman COULD conceivably beat out Vollers and Gurode.
Now, isn't that the whole point when drafting in the first three rounds?
Look, I just think JJ/BP wanted a RB with some real speed and elusiveness. Sure, a bigger back like Jackson would have been tougher in the middle, but you'll be giving up some speed on the corner IMO. The only viable RB's who actually dipped into the 4.4's, were Tatum Bell (who went ahead of Jones go figure) and I believe Cedric Cobbs in his Pro Day workout. Every other decent back was hard pressed to break the 4.55 barrier, much less the 4.50 on anyone's hand held timer.
Basically, if you were looking for a FAST back in this draft with the best combination of size, vision, elusiveness, receiving skills, level of competition, character, health and so on...it's hard not to target on Julius Jones. Now, I'm not sure if Tatum Bell was also a consideration at #43 (I'm sure he was) on our draft board. However, if we simply HAD to choose between those two guys, I think most would view Jones as the better all-around back.
Here's a good pic of both at the combine...Jones is on the right.

When Andrews, Wilfork and Carey all went before #22, I think trading down was the idea going in. Getting a 1st round pick from a 6-10 team like Buffalo, was just too hard to pass up. Having 2 1st round picks in 2005 draft will be HUGE! We could trade down and get our 3rd rounder for Henson back and then some. So, to get all this and still manage to draft three solid players is a good first day in my book. I'd give us a solid B grade so far. If we had moved only 15 spots then a B+ grade.....only 10 spots an A-....less than 10 an A+. You get the idea... :D
Now, we still have three picks to go. The 4th rounder should go to someone like DT's DeMarco McNeil or Chad Lavalais or a DB like Will Poole or Brandon Everage if available. I would like to get another RB for insurance in the 5th round too. I think Cobbs, Turner or Carthon would be worth the gamble there and you never know when you'll hit that homerun so to speak.
It's not over yet fans and there's still FA's in June to ponder.
