Ware vs Freeney...

Sometimes I get frustrated that Ware isn't getting to the QB more than he is although I do notice he gets a lot of pressures. Today I had the good fortune to watch Freeney for a full game followed directly by Ware for a full game. The differences I noticed looking at stats prior to today:

1) Ware: 33 tackles, 4 sacks
Freeney: 24 tackles, 9.5 sacks

2) What I noticed (and I noticed this in another Colts game I watched) Freeney runs full throttle upfield on almost EVERY play. Some tackles I saw him make today were from backside pursuit after the other side of the DL stoned the run. Freeney is looking to make the sack on every play. I'm surprised Indy isn't getting gouged with the run to his side more than they do. I saw the Rams run there with a lot of success on their Monday nite game a few weeks back. Freeney ran himself out of the play half the time.

3) Ware plays run first most of the time. Runs to his side aren't normally very successful. Was there anything cooler than Ware shoving LJ on his butt with only one arm and then getting in Trent's face? Ware is also dropping into coverage on occasion.

Conclusion: Freeney is getting more sacks, but he's rushing the QB on every play. Ware is making more tackles in the running game. Ware's opportunities to get sacks is probably less than Freeney's. Although sack #'s get you fame and fortune, perhaps as a statistic in evaluating a player, they are a little overrated? Scheme has a lot to do with sack #'s also.
I still wish we got more of them...but I'm not blaming Ware anymore, I think he's playing well.

I loved seeing Ware toss aside Johnson on that play where he almost had that sack....it was a one-handed toss and L. Johnson went flying to the side.

Pretty much true. He is a far cry from Dwight Freeney.

Freeney is a DE.

Unless something has changed, Ware is usually an OLB.

Despite playing the 3-4, LBers still have much greater run responsibilities that a DE.

No. I listened to it and Ware's name is hardly ever called.

Like I said, unless something changed...he's an OLB in a 3-4 with run (and coverage) responsibilities.

If all he did was rush the passer today, he sure as heck didn't do a whole lot.

He played down as a DE the entire game.

He played down as a DE the entire game.and did absolutely nothing until blocked by Johnson.

I think regardless of what position he is playing whether it is OLB or DE his job is to get to the passer, he wasnt drafted #11 to be a run stopper IMO. But i do like the way he is able to play the run and still put a lot of pressure on QBs.

Hes not in Freeney's league but its hard to compare their stats anyways. The colts have 2-3 other guys that get to the QB all of the time which will help freeney because they cant have more than a tackle and a back to block him. And the amount that teams pass against the colts should be much higher (but im not sure) than against dallas because the colts are always playing with a lead. Its hard to run when you are down by 10 in the 4th quarter.

He's got a way to go before he is in the same league as Freeney
