I just heard from a fiend that Darrell Russell the former Raider was killed this morning with another man in an auto accident this morning.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the family of the other victim.
No link yet, my friend is a L.A. police officer who was at the scene of the accident.

In college at USC this kid was the epitome of a character guy. Money changed him. I kept praying he'd come back to his roots of being a stand up person.

I kept hoping he'd bring his life 360 degrees.
I think he did. That was his main problem. Just couldn't turn his life back into the right direct. Headed straight for disaster like a magnet. Not surprising.

My goodness. This is sad if true.
If it isn't true, the admins of this board better damn well IP ban this user for stating a false rumor. He affirmatively stated that his friend was the cop at the accident. If this isn't true, this is a lie that is beyond the pale.
I hope it isn't true. Please be untrue.

Hold on now. He said a friend passed the info along. The police *could* be waiting to make an annoucement until family were notified. That's pretty standard -- and may take a little time.

His post says, a "fiend" told him. I've learned not to trust fiends. Here's to it being a mistaken rumor.

Ya know, I can't help but wonder if booze or drugs were involved, given Russell's history. I wish the family well. Russell had one of the greatest wasted careers in NFL history. I hope he finds the peace he never found in life.

Thanks jcblanco, but I'm sure that the others where just being cautious. Here's some more info.

CBS) LOS ANGELES Two people -- including former professional football player Darrell Russell, 29 -- died today after their speeding car went out of control, sheared off a fire hydrant, then slammed into a parked bus.
The accident on southbound La Cienega Boulevard occurred near Sawyer Street just after 6 a.m., according to Ron Myers of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Paramedics worked for about 25 minutes to free the men from the wreckage of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, he said. Both were taken to hospitals in critical condition.
The driver, taken to UCLA Medical Center in full cardiac arrest, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, but has not yet been identified. Russell, the passenger, was pronounced dead at Cedars- Sinai Medical Center.
The car left a roughly 50-yard path of destruction before it smashed into the bus.
The Grand Prix apparently hit a curb, then ran over the hydrant and knocked over several news racks before striking Metro Rapid bus No. 717, which was out of service with its flashers on. The driver was standing outside the bus when the accident occurred.
The car may have been racing another vehicle before the accident, according to an MTA spokesman.
La Cienega Boulevard, between Sawyer and 18th streets, was closed for more than three hours to accommodate the investigation and Department of Water and Power crews, who shut off the flow of water.

While his death is certainly tragic, I unfortunately cannot see Russell's name without thinking of his participation in that gang rape of the girl a few years back, where he and a group of his buddies drugged her at a club and then took their turns. His drug problems were unfortunate too, but those he brought onto himself. What he participated in against a defenseless woman was beyond heinous.

I remember during Russell's rookie year (I think) and the Raiders came down to Dallas. He destroyed Nate Newton in a way I didn't think existed. Russell was in the backfield more than Moose.
I thought Russell was a surefire Hall of Famer after that game.
