View Full Version : Darren Woodson said after SB XXX, players weren't thrilled just glad season was over

I was watching a show called "Super Bowl Secrets" last weekend and it had a lot of old popular stories such as the Joe Montana Jon Candy sighting, the Packers receiver who got drunk til 6 AM the night before Super Bowl I and then had a career day, and others, but it also had some stuff I'd never heard before.
They had an interview with Darren Woodson, and maybe this is an old interview that I've never seen before but it was sad which highlight they picked for the 90's Cowboys because it was a clip of Woodson talking about how the Cowboys didn't feel much happiness after the 1995 season was over, even though they had won the Super Bowl. They were just glad the season was over, and it was all behind them. He said that they were genuinely thrilled after winning the first two Super Bowls but the only thing they felt after winning the third one was relief. He said that football had stopped being fun after the mess and controversies after the first two Super Bowls. It's not a surprise to hear this just because I remember all the controversy from that year (wasn't that the year Hellbent was published?) but I'd never seen a quote from Woody admitting it. He always struck me as the kind of guy who didn't air dirty laundry, even if it's something as obvious as this. But watching this was another spark that makes me wonder what could have been had Jimmy stayed on board.
Also, two things about Drew Bledsoe. One was the famous play in the Packers/Patriots Super Bowl where Brett Favre throws his arms up in triump after a TD pass and you realize the Packers are probably going to beat the Pats. Favre had been watching Super Bowl highlights the day earlier in his hotel room, and the team he was watching checked to the same exact play in the same situation. Favre thought it was unbelievable and called the change and found his guy wide open. Poor Bledsoe and Parcells. :(
They also had an interview with Brady where he went into more detail about a story I had written earlier on the boards regarding Bledsoe and Brady's conversation in the last minute of the first Pats Super Bowl win over the Rams. Belichek gave Weiss the go ahead to drive down the field and not play for OT, Weiss grabbed Brady's arm on the way out and yelled at him telling him to hold on to the ball and not force anything, and then Bledsoe who was right next to Brady told him, "Nah! %*#$# it! Just sling it!"

I believe that was when the White House (party house) or something was discovered......I believe Alvin Harper was credited with running the place......and Eric Williams was caught on film with some lady.......
CrazyCowboy has a bad memory so this may not be accurate.

I remember as a fan having the same sense of relief/just glad it's over, I just had the feeling that the jig was up and was glad to get that championship and move on- I actually have never had the same fan intensity since then- as a matter of fact I paid little attention to the 1996 or 1997 seasons.

I do not believe that things would have been different OFF THE FIELD with Jimmy here longer. The fact is that some of these guys had habits that aren't acquired overnight. Remember, the White House was in existence back in the Jimmy days.
Jimmy had his share of knuckleheads with off the field incidents when with the Miami Dolphins also.
On the field, no one can argue that the players were aging come 1995, and Jimmy Johnson >>>>> Barry Switzer.
The players were 100% responsible for the SB win in 1995, and not the coaches or the owner. It was the reality of the Switzer era. This has to take a tremendous toll on the players from a mental aspect because they are in essence coaching themselves.
Also, when you start replacing good players with the drive to win with the likes of Stepfret Williams, Billy Davis, David LaFleur, Anthony Miller, Charlie Williams, etc., then losing becomes the norm for a self-coached team.

Jimmy would have beaten SF and won the Superbowl after the 1994 season. I'm convinced of that.
Jimmy was a task master when he ran his practices but IMHO didn't really care what players did on their spare time.
He left the U of Miami in a mess character wise there....I really don't think Jimmy cared as long as you performed.....Switzer was just a puppet when he took over....
Also...never underestimate the value Norv Turner had on this team....Jimmy gets alot of credit.....but we wouldn't of one a single SB if Shula was still our OC. Also....Jerry Jones was responsiable for bringing in Charles Haley.
You sometimes have to be lucky to achieve the greatness the Cowboys showed in the early 90's......pieces fell in place.

Aikman said in the locker room after XXX that the feeling was more "relief" than anything. I guess that echoes Woody's comments.

I remember it being a traumatic season: Switzer's bad call against the Eagles, Larry Brown's son dying, the spectre of impending FA losses. I remember having a genuine feeling of it being a 'Last Waltz' for the Cowboys.

Watching Joe Gibbs and Andy Ried on coach speak yesterday and it looked like that's how both of them felt. Niether one had much if any emotion and they looked like they just wanted to go home.

I remember that year, it was my first year in Dallas. Jerry signed with Pepsi/Rebook, was sued/sued league, signed Deion, Charles Haley had a meltdown with the coach (And his stab at Jerry's endorsement by saying "I'll have a coke and a smile"), the infamous 49er game where Jerry Rice embarrassed us, the Pizza Hut Deion commercial with "Both", Bayless accusing Aikman of faking an injury in the Washington game so that his buddy Norv could win, the 4th and one in Philly, Michael Irvin making a scene after winning the NFC Championship by cursing on national tv, and the players showing up to the Superbowl in limos.
And after that win, it got worse, Deion skipped the parade and we all know what happened with Irvin and White House...what a year...

I think we would have gone to at least the NFC championship the next year if MI didn't get hurt vs. Carolina!

I would have felt relief also if Switzer had been my coach.

We were falling apart before he got hurt.

Billy Davis and Kelvin Martin to the rescue!
Deion later got hurt on the reverse play.
The defense let Anthony Johnson have a huge day.
I remember that game so well because that was pretty much the last hurrah of the dynasty.

I believe so too. But Jimmy didn't want to be with the Cowboys so it's moot. He wouldn't have been around anyway.

Agreed, but Jones took it too far and the two should have compromised. The Switzer selection has to be one of if not the most idiotic and egotistical decisions I've ever seen in sports. Instead Jones let Johnson manipulate him into actually paying him off to leave! Man, if Jimmy was a used-car salesman he'd have 50 dealerships.
