Bowling Green QB to skip senior season, enter draft

Bowling Green quarterback Omar Jacobs (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=134244) will forgo his senior season and enter the 2006 NFL Draft. Jacobs leaves Bowling Green as the school's all-time leader in touchdown passes (71) and ranks third in career passing yards (6,938).

"It was a decision that was certainly not easy and a decision that I hope the people who have supported me throughout my career can understand and respect," said Jacobs.

Jacobs received a fourth-round grade from the NFL's draft advisory committee, and believes his athletic ability will be on display at the NFL scouting combine and will help his stock rise.

"Omar believes there is a need for quarterbacks in this draft," Jacobs' mother, Barbara Bean told ESPN's Joe Schad.

"We respect Omar's decision and we support him," Bowling Green head coach Gregg Brandon said. "Any coach would love to have an Omar Jacobs for another year, but we know his desire is to play professionally. We really appreciate his efforts in helping us re-establish a winning tradition at BGSU. He's a great kid who can realize a dream and he wants to devote all of his energies towards making that a reality."

That doesn't sound like a good idea for him. He could really use all the work in college he can before going on to the NFL.

Here's someone who had a 1st round grade going into his junior year, only to have his stock drop thanks to his injury this past year.

With the lack of QB talent in this draft, I would easily take him in the 2nd-3rd round and have him learn from Bledsoe for a season or two.

I don't know. I can see your point, but I just wonder about a guy from a small program making this kind of move.

It just does not make much sense to me. It's not like he has been playing against top level competition. And he is not in a position like Leinart was last year and Young this year. Coming back for another season could have really hurt Leinart's stock last year, and Young's this year.

If Jacobs has a season that causes his stock to fall even further, he is probably not a NFL caliber qb anyway.

He's projected as a 2nd rounder at this point, and I don't think BP will go there that early in the draft...He doesn't have time to put up with the Start Omar threads and screams from the fans..

Lets not go into the big school - small school debate. We all know they're HUGE talents that slip thru the recruiting cracks and play for smaller schools.

Jacobs is a warrior. Last year alone he played with a broken big toe on his plant foot and with bone chips in both feet. Last year as a sophmore he only threw for 4,002 yards, 67% completion percentage, 41 TD's and 4 INT's. All this as a sophmore!

This year he seperated his shoulder early in the season and battled back earlier than expected and did very well in only 9 games. He threw for 2,591 yards, 61% completion percentage, 26 TD's and 7 INT's. Most of those stats coming after he seperated his shoulder.

Like I said, it isn't like Jacobs fell off the map, but his injured cost him ALOT of money.

rd 2 i'd definitely take a chance on this guy. I've been liking him since that season he had. i thought for sure he'd be a rd 1 pick but this year has made him fall.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thank you!
I heard the hype so i caught a few of his games this year....he was horrible against bad competition. totally unimpressed. wouldn't sign him as a undrafted FA

No way he's a UDFA. He fought some injuries this year, I thought I read one was to his throwing shoulder. His SR year may have hurt his stock, but sliding down and still having the 13th best passer rating ain't bad.

I caught his games last year and this year, the only thing that hurt him was the injury to his shoulder. Somebody on draft day will happy as hell to get him.

Did you see him light up Wisconsin in 2005 or OU in 2004? There's not a player on the team besides him worth drafting. He must have done something right.

Putting in as a rookie would be better than Henson and Romo.

As a rookie, an NFL qb coach could help with his mechanics, reads and anything else he needs full time. In college, you're only a part time football player.

this year he was injured most of the year. Check out his 2004 stats though:
4002 yards, 66.9% completions, 41 TDS!! and only 4 INTS!!! that is freakin amazing. I dont care what kind of competition he is playing, his team around him isnt good, and he still can have a 10:1 TD:INT ratio even though he threw for 4000+ yards. that is just sick.

He is a great decision maker, great size, great arm, and he can rush when he has to. I would love to get him in the 2nd. If he could have came out after 2004 season he would be a top 10 pick.

Bottom line Omar Jacobs is a better Pro prospect than either Henson or Romo.
