get his first INT in pass coverage. He didnt do anything but get burnt this year in pass coverave. I dont even remeber him having any passes defended. We need some LBs like Urlacher, game changers. All we have is an average pass rusher in Ware and an OK one in James. Ellis is probably gone, Glover probably gone. Im worried about our D

Outside of Merriman, there wasn't a better rookie pass rusher. If that's "average", please give me more "average" pass rushers.

Pretty tough on a small school defensive end making the jump to the NFL and learning a new position on the fly, aren't we?
It's no easy thing, what Ware was asked to do this past season.
He's learning and making strides and will only get better.
Relax.
We need some LBs like Urlacher, game changers.
Urlacher is a special player and they aren't easy to find even when you own a top five draft pick.
I thought things went exceedingly well our first year in the 3-4 after having played nothing but the 4-3 in our entire history.
Again, relax.
Same here. I'll take as many of those as I can get.And ware also got more pressures and stuffs right?

Not to mention comparing Urlacher, a 6 year vet who's always played LB'r, to a rookie in Ware. Let's fire ware:banghead:

I think we need a real DC in here who lets Ware play on instinct. Not read and react bend dont break.

Did you even watch the games? This is not an attempt to defend Zimmer.. but Ware was allowing our opponents to run the ball all over us on his side of the field in the first few games. EVERY play Ware would blow up field looking to pressure the QB and they'd just run right at where HE WAS. As the season progressed, he started reading the play (which is ABSOLUTELY necesary in that position) and stuffing the run to his side.. his sacks suffered but that's to be expected as he gets used to his assignments. In games like Denver, Carolina, and St. Louis... he was not only stopping the run, but was an effective pass rusher as well.
If you just let everyone run around on instinct only... you'll get burned beyond belief. Derrick Johnson's first 2 years at UT.. he'd just run around playing purely on instinct and give up big plays against the pass cuz he'd miss his assignment (covering the TE)... and he's got to be one of the best "instinctive" players I've ever seen.

In the pros, yes, but wasn't he a safety in college? Thought I heard that somewhere.

This is a copy of a post that I made shortly after the Carolina game regarding Ware and what I thought about him in a Ware vs Merriman discussion:
A few things I just wanted to point out about Ware. Now, keep in mind that I haven't watched a single play of Merriman's this year so this is not intended to be a comparison.. its just about Ware.
1) His upper and lower body strength are already incredible. His lower body strength is exibited in how he can get o-linemen off balance just by bull rushing (See the Leonard Davis pushed into McCown causing an interception play... that's one of the biggest offensive linemen in the NFL that he just overpowered) His upper body strength is exihibited in his ability to keep his arms extended as even fullbacks try to block him. In today's game.. I can't count how many times he takes on the fullback, extends his arms to get separation, and gets off the blocker to either make the tackle or disrupt the running back.
2) His ability to take on blockers.. and get off of blockers. He is already VERY GOOD at getting separation from a blocker and maneuvering to get in position to make a play on the ball.
3) His ability to scrape down the line on outside runs. There was one play in the KC game where he singled handedly forced Larry Johnson all the way to sideline and almost out of room to run. I assure you, Ware took on AT LEAST 3 blockers. Each blocker comes at him, the first trying to take out his legs.. he recoils and continues horizontally, the next tries to stand him up, he separates and contiues toward the sideline, and so on. He didn't quite make the tackle but he forced the play to the sideline and shut down all running lanes. I believe this was the play that Keith Davis got a good pop on Johnson on the sideline.
4) His quickness and agility cause real problems for offensive linemen. He used the speed rush repeatedly today and look what happened... 3 forced fumbles by knocking the ball out of Delhomme's hand. As he progresses as a pass rusher... he is going to REQUIRE a double team. Notice today.. after the first forced fumble.. anytime we only rushed 4... Ware was the only guy getting ROUTINELY doubled. Wait till he throws a spin move on someone.. speed rush into a spin move.. OMG that's gonna be domination. His pass rush ability will only improve as he learns various moves and what moves to use when and against what linemen.
Just my observations. I am VERY VERY excited about Ware.. what he showed today was NOT a fluke. He's been doing it throughout the season here and there but today he put it all together and you saw what he can do.

I think we should just cut our losses now... we gave him a whole darn year to acclimate to the NFL...
For what he makes, he should play like a seasoned vet from play one... we blew this pick...

We need to get rid of Zimmer and find a defensive coordinator that will stop Ware from trying to read offensive formations and plays.
He needs to let him run around like a wild, uncontrollable animal for him to be most effective.

I think we need a real DC in here who lets Ware play on instinct. Not read and react bend dont break. Your vendeta against Zimmer is really getting old. Ware has to do more than just run off the edge. Notice how he did that early in the year and teams would just run at him. Later in the season he started occupying is blocker and forcing hte run back inside, where he had support. Im not sure what your grduge against Ware's play really was this season. Sometimes I begin to think you don't really watch the games, and even if you do, your blind hatred towards Zimmer is just dispicable. Believe me, the collapse of our team had alot more to do with the O-Line situation after Flozell Adams went down than anything else.

WOW!! I thought I was the only one around here that didn't blame Zimmer for everything that's wrong with this team.

Actually he also uses the Bull Rush at times as well. (See the play vs Leonard Davis where he caused an INT that Anthony Henry ran back for a TD)
He's a rookie... great pass rushers progress as their career continues developing new moves and learning their opponents.

Considering he got 8 sacks with that one move, imagine what he can do when he learns another move or two.
Why don't we give him another TC and a season before calling him out.

For a guy playing a new defense, a new position, an jumping from minor college ball to the NFL, I'd say that Ware had a more than stellar campaign.
I do understand your point, and the fact that you actually never say that he's bad, just that you state the facts. True he doesn't really have an array of moves, but just like it was with Brady James, you will see what 1 off-season of strength and condition combined with film study will do for ole DeMarcus. The guy will be a menace next year. The following is NOT addressed to you Key, just everyone in general:
Just wait til we get another guy who can at least get SOME pass rush at OLB opposite of Ware.
t
Once teams can no longer say, "There's 94, he's coming!", this defense will imrpove 5 fold. Believe me. If you know ANYTHING about the 3-4, you will understand that the bread and butter is the fact that you disguise your 4th pass rusher, whereas the 4-3 USUALLY sends the 4 downlinemen. It's kind of hard to hide the 4th pass rusher when EVERYONE knows it's Ware.

How many picks did Merriman have?

Here's a better question - how many more INTs will Ware cause next year, due to the unbelievable pressure he puts on the QB? Hmmmm?
