Was Danny White Pulled too Early?

When he was benched for Gary Hoogeboom? Could he have gotten better if given more time? Roger Staubach said, "Danny White will never get the credit he deserved."

Danny White was a very good QB. Unfortunately, for him, he followed Staubach.

He did seem to have a little Meredith/Morton in him, ie, making the big mistakes at the worst times.

The Hogenbloom (as Landy called him) wasn't handled well. The team was split...if I recall, the local papers ran polls...and eventually, Danny took a seat.

We had become spoiled. Roger brought home the big prize. When White didn't, his fate was sealed.

I didn't get to watch White play, but I wonder how White compares to Steve Young.

If Young never won the 1995 Super Bowl, would he be what Danny White is today?

Conversely, if Danny White won just one of those Super Bowls, could he be as heralded as Steve Young is now? Possible Hall of Famer? Possible Ring of Honor member?

Unfortunately he was on the losing end of 3 Championship Games. The San Fran loss was the only one that was winnable, and, in fact, should have been won. The defense turned the ball over a half dozen times. White failed to convert and run out the clock, failed to get in FG range with time, and failed to hang onto the ball in the end. That game was his loss to me, as much as everyone else wants to call it San Fran's win.

Having said all that, Dallas began the downward slide after that game and White should consider himself fortunate to have left the game with the good name that he has. It could have gotten much uglier to him had he kept playing over Hodgeboom or any of the other bozo's to follow.

That loss rests squarely on Landry's stubborness in not shifting out of the flex D on SF's last drive, when it was clear they were running the ball for huge chunks of yardage.

Never would of got to that point if they'd of not let SF ripoff 12 yards at a crack because of Landry's failure to see the obvious.

Bottom line is, Walsh simply out-foxed him on that last drive.

If you remember Danny was never the same after the wrist injury, and as much as I hate to say it, he seemed to lack leadership skills. JMO.

I was a little kid in the 80's and all I remember about Danny White was how he would fumble or give up the ball and we'd lose in the playoffs. At least he got us to the playoffs.:cry:

Despite my moniker, I was a mere lad at the time, and while I loved the Cowboys and Danny White, I really didn't comprehend the politics of QB controversies, etc.

For me, admiring Danny White means sticking by my Cowboys through thick and through thin. I think White personifies "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" and if you can root for your team when the defeat is the bitterest, then you are a true fan.

I wish to heck he would have won a Super Bowl, or at least won that damn game (you know what I'm talking about), but then I guess it would be easier to root for Danny White.

Didn't that srist injury occur in 1986? That was his 11th year with the team and 7th as the starter. The wrist was not a problem for him when the team was in the playoffs.

You people forget that Danny had lost the team in training camp in '84. His teammates wanted Hogeboom to win the job, and he did.
