If you were a hot assistant, why would you want to come to Dallas? Parcells is a mini-tyrant who forbids his coordinators from speaking to the press. That's a work environment conducive to success?? Conversely, in DC, you're well paid and you can speak freely. I live in DC, and I can assure you that guys like Bugel and Williams had as much or more airtime than Gibbs. Saunders will be no different. Yeah, Gibbs is a dinosaur like Tuna, but not an ego-driven emperor.

Yeah, Payton hated it so much he decided to institute the exact same policy with his assistants when he left.

How many "hot assistants" did the Patriots sign from other teams?
How many "hot assistants" did the Cowboys sign from other teams that led us to our Super Bowls in the 1990s?
How many "hot assistants" have the four remaining playoff teams signed from other teams?

Maybe because Parcells is widely regarded as one of the best head coaches in NFL history and, however difficult it is to work with him on a personal level, experience on Parcell's staff goes a long way to shore up a coaching resume?

You makes some good points.
The only reason I would come to Dallas would be:
1) To work and gain some knowledge of a Hall of Fame Coach.
2) A possible opportunity to coach the Cowboys after his Bill's Retirement.
I have heard that Bill does make life miserable on a daily basis...and that is on a good day.

There is no evidence that gagging the coaches has an effect on whether they get hired.
In fact, it might even help by adding an air of mystery to them.

Well, the almighty Belichick doesn't allow his assistants to talk to the press either. The same can be said for Coughlin, Romeo Crennel, and Charlie Weiss.
All assistants under Parcells who apparently didn't mind the rule and in fact, believe it's a good rule to have.

I don't know.
Why don't you ask Bill Belichek, the head coach for the 3 time champion New England Patriots.
Or maybe ask Romeo Crennel, Head Coach of the Clevland Browns.
Or maybe ask Nick Saban, Head Coach of the Dolphins.
Or maybe ask Tom Coughlin, Head Coach of the NY Giants.
Or maybe ask Sean Payton, Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints.
Or maybe Maurice Carthon, a finalist for some coaching jobs.
Or maybe Mike Zimmer, someone who gets interviews for head coaching jobs.
Yeah.... why would a coach want to be coordinator for Parcells? Clearly he is such a tyrant his coordinators were foolish to work for him.
How much would it cost you to buy a clue?

Even more than that, what about the story from the Belichick book about Parcells intentionally berating him in front of the staff, saying something like, "That's so stupid... No wonder you were a failure in Cleveland."
That's something I wouldn't want to put up with if I were an assistant.
But even more than that, I think Parcells just doesn't want to work with anybody he doesn't already know and/or can't control. He was forced to in 2003, but even some of those relationships (Warhop) became a disaster almost immediately.

This is very funny... back about 3 years ago during the Crampo era... what did this team desperately need? DISCIPLINE!!! Everyone was overjoyed to hear that Parcells the disciplinarian was going to be our next HC back then. Now we're crying tyrant???
The buck begins and ends with Parcells... no assistant coach was to be allowed to speak... Accountability for the whole team by a future HOF coach! YAY everyone screams!! Assistants speaking to the media was more of a protective measure initiated by Parcells when I first heard it IMO... Now Parcells is equal to Stalin or any other ol' tyrant because his assistants can't speak their mind. BOO HOO! I could care less.
Fix the DANG OL and we're in like Flynn... Everything that was once broken is getting fixed... All CowboyZone members know that has been the case... The D was bad 2 years ago... Now it's top 10... Offense collapsed due to lack of depth at OL and age... We're going to fix that next. BOOK IT!
Stop worrying Zoners... we weren't supposed to be a SB contender until year 3-4... we're still on track. Doom and gloom be danged!!

Why would assistants come to work for Parcells?
Quick quiz:
How many current HCs, pro & college, worked under that bastid Parcells?
I can count Belichick, Weiss, Crennel, Saban, Mangini, Groh, Payton, not to mention "hot" assistants like Henning & Carthon (who will probably be a HC in a few years). Hey--ESPN was creaming their panties the other day about 7 ACs off the Belichick tree, all of them now HCs. Interestingly, every one of them had also been ACs under Parcells (altho ESPN conveniently forgot to mention that in their daily blow-fest of the Patriots & how wonderful they are).
Now, how many of Gibbs' proteges have gone on to be successful HCs?
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Bueller, Bueller, anyone, anyone?
I love the way people b**** about Parcells being a tyrant. Apparently every other coach in the NFL is a sweet lovable huggy-bear, who passes out candy & ice cream to his assistants & every day is a party & they sing "Good Morning Sunshine" to start the day. Yup, that evil bastid' Parcells.
Funny thing: Belichick refuses to allow his assistants to speak to the press, Saban was called the Nick-tator from day one of taking over the Dolphins (& refuses to allow his assistants to talk to the press), Gruden doesn't strike me a real easy-going guy (I'm guessing that someone who brags about coming in to work by 3am probably expects much the same from his assistants), Billick--'nuff said, there was a program about Holmgren where his former assistants talked about what a hard-a** he was to work for, etc.
Really--people are getting worked up about assistant coaches the way they get worked up over "big-name" FAs. Remember the melt-down a couple of years ago when Danny-Boy was signing all sorts of "name" FAs? Now everyone's all in a lather about "hot" ACs being signed or not signed. Chill. A great AC isn't going to assure a team of anything, anymore than a great FA is. (Exhibits A & B: TO & Randy Moss. Remember last spring, when all the "experts" were just positive that Moss catching passes from Kerry Collins with the Raiders would be unstoppable? Hey, we should have just written them a ticket to the AFC Championship game because they were absolutely going to steamroll their division? Randy Galloway even wrote a column about what a great QB Collins was & what a mistake the Boys made by not signing him--compared him to Delhomme. Well, I'm thinking Norv Turner, as he trucks his belongings over to the 49ers, might want to tell you there's no such thing as a "sure" thing. Or Coach Joe--& why hasn't anyone suggested that we get him back here for special teams?)

Let me put it another way: would the likes of Saunders and Williams work in Dallas for less pay and Bill's bullsh*t? No. The Skins attract filet mignon, but thanks to Bill, Dallas gets hamburger helper.
They'e hired "filet mignon" for several years--I don't see it paying out yet. Yup, they reached the playoffs this year, but they're still not in the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning & Tony Dungy are "filet mignon"--they're not in the Super Bowl either. I'm not convinced the skins have "filet mignon" any more than the Boys have "hamburger helper." Parcells may actually be reasonably happy with the coaches he has now. Interesting that he hasn't fired any of them, as he did the last 2 years. It's possible that he now has a nucleus of "his guys" whom he thinks can make it work. Remember, when he came here he had to start from scratch with coaches. I'll respectfully point out that even the all-of-a-sudden-lionized-Gibbs brought in all of his former guys. Parcells didn't have that luxury this time around, as most of them had gone with Belichick (or elsewhere, like Hennings & Groh). So he's had to build a new group & get a comfort level with them--& all of those coaches have had to build a comfort level with a lot of new & young players, which hopefully everyone now has. And if you look at the skins, their players themselves have said that simply having some consistency from last year to this year helped them a lot. Well, our rookies & 1st-year players have now had a year to work with Parcells & the majority of the ACs (depending on how many new ACs come in, if any).
You're entitled to your opinion. So am I. So is Parcells. The proof will be next year & future years, as to who has the "hamburger helper" & who has "filet mignon." I'm guessing that neither description is accurate, & that reality falls somewhere in between for both teams. It's all going to come down to how the teams fare. If the Cowboys make the playoffs & go far, Parcells is a genius. If they don't--well, then you get a perfect chance to crow. Until then, sorry, but I don't see any AC out there that is an automatic Super Bowl guarantee for any team--nor that the absence of said ACs be a death-blow for a team.

True, yet 99% of the fans here would take both over Bill and Drew.

Apparently, you're the only one who thinks "williams+saunders > zimmer+payton" is a controversial statement. The vast majority of league GM's would side with me.
Parcells may actually be reasonably happy with the coaches he has now.
Because he's an imperious who doesn't value or need their input. How many coaches did Gibbs shove last year?
Interesting that he hasn't fired any of them, as he did the last 2 years. It's possible that he now has a nucleus of "his guys" whom he thinks can make it work. Remember, when he came here he had to start from scratch with coaches.
Yeah, his o-line coach worked wonders. And his Stone Age "play just well enough to lose" was a great strategy too.
I'll respectfully point out that even the all-of-a-sudden-lionized-Gibbs brought in all of his former guys.
Most of whom have coached their a***es off.

Coaches' salaries no predictor of wins
4 teams that employ highest-paid staffs have losing records
Published April 17, 2005
The Bears had the least experienced coaching staff in the NFL in Lovie Smith's first season, and they will be the least experienced again. They also were the lowest paid, according to an NFL Coaches Association survey.
Although the New England Patriots had the fifth-highest-paid staff, it was hard to draw a parallel between winning and coaching salaries last season. The Super Bowl runner-up Philadelphia Eagles ranked 21st in coaching salaries.
Dallas Cowboys coaches were the league's highest paid, averaging $301,710, with 15 coaches reporting to the survey. The Bears averaged $186,407, with 17 coaches reporting. The Cowboys were 6-10; the Bears, 5-11.
Seven of the 12 playoff teams ranked in the top half of coaching salaries. The four highest-paid staffs—Dallas, Tampa Bay, Washington and Kansas City—had losing records. The next four—New England, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and San Diego—were in the playoffs. Two of the four lowest-paid staffs—Indianapolis and Minnesota—made the playoffs.
In the NFC North Division, the Packers ranked 27th at $210,279 and the Vikings 31st at $190,187, but both made the playoffs. The Lions ranked ninth at $241,250 and finished 6-10.
The Eagles ($222,648) have dominated the NFC East for four years yet have the lowest-paid staff in the division.

Do you want to know why the Skins attract and retain top-notch assistants, it's simple...
1. Joe Gibbs is a great coach and disciplinarian without being a tyrant or an !
2. Dan Snyder appreciates his assistants and compensates them appropriately.
3. Washington is an up-and-coming team with a ton of young talent on O and D.

If I were an assistant coach, the only (and I mean only) reservation I would have about coming to Dallas is not knowing for exact sure how long Bill was going to stay and what the coaching staff would look like if he left. For instance, I would hate to pick up, move to Dallas, work with Parcells for a year just to have Bill retire, and Jerry hire a new guy who wanted his own staff.

Witten is great though, I think he's top 3 or 4 at his position.
My point was that the Cowboys have a group of skill players that ranks in the bottom third of the league. There's a lot of improvement needed there to lure any OC. Oh yeah, who's Dallas got at QB for the future? Don't say Romo, that would be worse than bringin up Keyshawn!

If you read the whole thread which I sure hope you have, you would notice it was one of your fellow Skins fans that brought up QBs. I simply said when it comes to future QBs neither team has a sure thing. Cambell being a first rounder does not automatically make him the future. Look, Zoners, the proof is in the pudding. If you are a bright young mind, coming up to coach in the NFL, why wouldn't you want to coach for Bill Parcells? Any former Parcells assistant is almost guaranteed an NFL job for life, and many continue to climb the head coaching ranks. So why would that prevent anyone from coming here?
Look, some of you are feeling jealous right now. Fine, whatever. If you want to be jealous of a team that has to overpay assistant coaches so greatly, to cover up the incompetence of their head coach, by all means, root for the Redskins. Parcells system works, and it was working last year. The problem is not the coach, but the execution. And that will be fixed with experience in a system, not by bringing in glitzy assistant coach names, to act as a warm blanket for deluded fans.

I believe many young coaches could learn a lot from Bill...Like he said he learned from Landry...How long do you practice with them in pads, When do you give up on a player, allocation of practice time...etc
I guess we'll know soon enough who our coach's will be.
The term "Hot young coach's"...
Well, that can mean one thing to BP and another to a coach with a different style.
With BP here out style isn't going to change.
