He never gets mentioned when people are talking old time Cowboys, but for those of you who remember a wonderful OG named Herb Scott who was one of the better guards in the league for a few years, he was recently named to the Virginia College Hall of Fame.

Where do you think I came up with the "68" number on my username?

He is one of my favorite lineman.

I currently rate herb as the fourth best guard in Cowboys history.

Cool...glad an old time fan saw this before it disappears...personally, I'd rate Scott ahead of Newton, whom I think is vastly overrated due to the other OG's who played when he did...he wasn't the type of athlete we find in LA or Herb.

Scott was a complete guard without any of Nate's issues.

Herb Scott was very good. Another OL who has been overlooked is Pat Donovan. He was a solid LT for years. Dallas really missed him when he retired. They did not have another good LT until Tuinei took over the position.

The starters were all of Irish descent (Donovan, Rafferty, Fitzgerald, etc.) ... with one notable exception.

So, whomever it was, said the Cowboys offensive line was made up of four Irishmen and a Scot(t).

i don't remember too much of scott which prolly means he did his job, but i do remember ol' nate on running downs, he was a beast. the man could move for a 320 pounder. someone reported he ran a 4.9 at some point. and he played a lot more years than herb having come out of college in '83 and played in the USFL.

that's one heck of a carreer for an undrafed overweight guard from a small school. 3 super bowl rings and blocking for the all time rushing leader speak for themselves.

I think it was Rayfield Wright but I could definatly be wrong about that. Could be Copper.

You're right. I forgot about him.

Rafferty was still a guard at this time ... he eventually moved to center when Fitzgerald retired.

Yep, this was in the early 1980s, so it was Cooper and Donovan at tackle; Rafferty and Scott at guard and Fitzgerald at center.

Rafferty then moved to center when Fitzgerald retired and I think it was Kurt Petersen that took over at guard. Something like that.

And it took Tui some time to develop at that. The 83-84 transition was brutal with Butch Johnson, Drew Pearson, Billy Joe DuPree, Doug Donley, Dat Donovan, and Harvey Martin all leaving the team for various reasons. Scott, Rafferty, and Cooper seemed to pick that time to age all at once.

And it took Tui some time to develop at that.

If memory serves, Tui started as a DE. So yeah, he definatly took the scenic route.
